YesAsia Editorial Description
After debuting in the midst of the summer girl group boom with Lies in July, T-ara stormed to the top of the K-pop charts in September and October with the digital single T.T.L (Time to Love), their hit collaboration with Cho Shin Sung. Both T.T.L (Time to Love) and its follow-up TTL Listen.2 are included in the rookie girl group's hot debut album Absolute First Album. The six girls display two styles and sides of themselves in their two new singles, the funky electro-pop dance number Bo Peep Bo Peep and the sexy-sweet tune "Like the First Time". The 14-track album also features the dance and slow versions of T-ara's debut single "Lies".

ABSOLUTE FIRST ALBUM
티아라가 데뷔 120일만에 정규 앨범을 발매한다.
티아라는 지난 7월 말 <거짓말>로 데뷔했으며, 이후 초신성과 함께 한 TTL (Time To Love), TTL Listen.

Like the First Album

For reasons beyond my comprehension, the powers-that-be have chosen the weakest song on T-ara's Absolute First Album to be their first plug. Once you get past the trend rehash of auto-tune, fuzzy paws, and repetitive kindergarten English that is Bo Peep Bo Peep (Track 3) though, it all gets better from there. T-ara entered autumn this year somewhere at the bottom of the girl group heap. Never mind Kara and Brown Eyed Girls' breakthrough years and Girls' Generation's continued domination, the group faced an uphill battle just among the rookies. In comparison to the more talented 2NE1, the cuter f(x), the sexier 4Minute, and the fiercer After School, T-ara was short on the wow factor. (Breaking the hearts of Yoo Seung Ho fangirls with your debut MV can only get you so far.) T-ara got that break in September with the project single TTL (Time to Love) (Track 10), their collaboration with back-from-oblivion boy band Supernova that improbably managed to boost both groups' careers into relevancy again. TTL (Time to Love) is a great gimmick - mixing and matching idols for a mixed-gender project group - but it's also a great song that's refreshingly different from other recent K-pop dance hits. The sultry ballad refrain, mellow mid-tempo rap, and gentle dance beats combine for a catchy blast to the past, more late nineties than late 2000s. Souped-up sequel TTL Listen 2 (Track 12) brings things up to speed with harder beats and hip-hop arrangement. While the vocals portions are stronger in TTL, TTL Listen 2 stands out with the rap, in particular Hyo Min's portions. Together, TTL (Time to Love) and TTL Listen 2 successfully bring out two sides of the song and the group, sealing the deal on a unique project collaboration that I would rank among the best K-pop singles of the year. It is perhaps only expected then that the newer songs on Absolute First Album don't reach the heights of TTL, though "Like the First Time" (Track 2) comes pretty close. The album's second main single, "Like the First Time" has a coy, soothing melody and infectious beats that the girls play up with wispy voices. The song gets ahead of itself though by pulling a full stop a third of the way through for an edgy rap interlude that is well delivered, but doesn't gel with what came before. The stark contrast is clearly intended for dramatic effect, but it doesn't work that well on a CD listen. The switch-up should be fine though for live performances when it's accompanied by changes in dance choreography and stage demeanor - yet another reason why "Like the First Time" is the song T-ara should be plugging now instead of bouncing around with feline accessories chanting Bo Peep Bo Peep. One & One (Track 1) would also make a good stage song, so much so it's a bit surprising that it's not the first plug. It has all the popular K-pop ingredients of the moment: bombastic electro with throbbing techno beats, repeating auto-tuned passages, and an intro that's begging to be danced to. At the same time, the song has a hard, dramatic edge that plays to the group's strong low vocals, though it does give off occasional 2NE1 vibes. The album's other dance tracks like Tic Tic Toc (Track 4) and the staccato fusion of electro, hip-hop, and bubble gum pop that is Bye Bye (Track 5) are similarly in tune with the current K-pop trend, while still presenting a degree of freshness. T-ara also does cute just fine in their cheery fairytale apple CF song Apple is A (Track 6), and takes a decently soulful stab at R&B with Falling U (Track 7). For every idol group that makes it, another falls by the way side. Many many K-pop girl groups and boy bands debuted this year, and they probably won't all be around this time next year. But T-ara should be just fine if they keep releasing solid albums like this one. |

About the CD packaging, I must say Core never lets me down. I love the text designing, the girls looked gorgeous, I love their outfits, makeups, hairdoes,... everything visual. The front cover showed the chic, sexy side of '처음처럼' in only black & white while the back cover expressed the colorful cuteness of 'Bo Peep Bo Peep'. The booklet was satisfying. All the photos were amazing, the perfect light & color arrangements really made the girls stood out from the backtheme and gave the whole album an unique feeling of chicness, mature sexiness and femininely cuteness all mixed together smoothly. I love how each girl, having contained the group's image and at the same time expressing her very own color: the Fierce Eunjung, Tough Soyeon, Sexy Hyomin, Feminine Qri,... I especially love the '처음처럼' themed individual photos of the girls, they looked unique and very gorgeous. And how the CD was placed inside of a envelope with the lucky green colored text on it was just adorable. This is an absolute must-have for all Diamonds! |

'너 너 너' was also one of nicest track in the album. I love the lightly sad yet still so strong feelings that the song delivered, with beautiful melody and the girls' soulful vocals. I especially love Eunjung's and Hyomin's powerful rap and Soyeon's thick, melodic vocal. They totally succeed in making the song, instead of some kind of boring ballad, a hit. '거짓말 (Dance ver)' was an OK song but I really didn't like it too much. In my opinion, the only ting unique and recognizable in the song were again, the rap duo Eunjung and Hyomin. Still, T.T.L. (Time To Love) was definitely a hit. In contrast with the soft, sorrow melody, the strong, powerful vocals and rough rapping really made a boost! I think this song can get anyone to love its beautiful, emotional yet still teenage young lyrics. Thumbs up! I must say I absolutely prefer '거짓말 (Slow ver)' to the original version. The melody was softer, it was gentle, sweet and painful, the girls' strong, emotional vocals really expressed the sad lyrics and made it perfect. I also love the new rapping! Unfortunately, when it comes to TTL Listen. 2, I personally think the original version is much better. The addition of overly autotune and crazily bumping beat didn't make the song any better. Even the new lyrics and new rappings... The song was kind of catchy when you're used to it, but I wouldn't say it's a hit. '좋은 사람' was a great track, but really, I'd prefer the original version which featured T-ara's ex members Jiae and Jiwon. In comparison with the two's strong, soulful, unique vocals, Qri's and Boram's thin, rough singing doesn't stand a chance. Of course they still have Soyeon, but I personally think she couldn't fully express the song and the rearrangements made Eunjung and Hyomin sound so awkward when they were trying to fill in the blanks Jiae and Jiwon left behind. However, I still love the song's sweet, gentle melody that can make me tear up sometimes. '놀아볼래?' made a nice ending for the album with its funky, fresh, unique melody. It just makes me really wanna dance along to the song XD |

Absolute First Album was absolutely a great album and is a total highly-recommended. One & One makes a good intro with thumping beat, and the autotune-ness that can easily get people hooked. At first I didn't really like the song, but now I'm like addicted to it! '처음처럼' delivered a more feminine, chic feeling with slower beat and sweeter, higher-pitched vocals. I especially love Eunjung's and Hyomin's rap parts. It was so unique and totally made the song stand out from the familiar pop genre. Bo Peep Bo Peep has much more cutesy with sickeningly sweet autotuned vocals and the meaningless 'Bo Peep Bo Peep' that the girls kept singing during the entire song, but Soyeon's and Eunjung's powerful vocals saved the song from becoming yet another forgetable bubblegum hit. Tic Tic Toc has more techno feeling with electronical beat and medium-pitched vocals. I don't really find the song much melodic, but it's still a catchy song. Bye Bye in my opinion wasn't really anything outstanding. It was more brightful, somewhat fresh, not too cutesy like BPBP, but brightful with sweet melody and medium beat. It was an OK track, not outstanding, but acceptable. Apple Is A contained more trot feeling, but mixed with modern bubblegumpop feeling and yes, it became a great track. The melody was childish, sweet, brightful and very cute. It's like the song was some kind of musical fairytale, and I love it a lot. Falling U was my favourite track from the album and I must say I'm totally addicted to the soft, sweet R&B melody of the song. There wasn't too much autotune and the girls' vocals were so emotional and strong. It's good to see the girls actually sing. |

I began to listen to T-Ara from their single Bo Peep Bo Peep, and then I immediately bought this album!! All the tracks are amazing and there aren't any filled songs! The most beautiful songs are: -01-One&One -02-Like the first time -03-Bo Peep Bo Peep -09-Lies (Dance version) -10-TTL -13-Good Person -14-Wanna Play? In this album there are a lot of genres: from Bubblegum Pop, across Elettropop, to R&B... The booklet is amazing and it contains a lot of amazing pictures from the set of Bo Peep Bo Peep and Like the First Time! And the packaging is fantastic! It seems like more than a book with inside a CD! People said that this album is the album of 2009, and I agree at 100%!!!!!!! This isn't a waste of money, so I recommend it for everyone! Go T-Ara!!!! |

Best Album of 2009 :)

There are many concepts in the kpop scene at the moment From Dark, cute, beastly to charismatic and many more ! But with this concept, T-ara manages to pull of some of the best hits i've ever hear <3 Time to Love, a collaboration with fellow boy band, Cho Shin Sung (Supernova) is highly one of the BEST tracks of this album :D Also its other tracks which include Bo Peep Bo Peep, Falling U, Good Person, Wanna Play, etc. are ALL very nice songs for all music genres :) With its 14 tracks, not just any but AMAZING songs, its a definite 10 ~ The Album itself is absolutely good quality :D the pictures, the covers and cd print is breathtaking One of the best albums i'll ever get >:] Its structure is like a rectangle reading book. The cover is hard so no need to worry about if it'll break easy :P Inside it has ALOT of nice pictures of each member + group All the images are pretty big and has a nice atmosphere |
