YesAsia Editorial Description
Dubbed the next FTIsland, Korean band CNBLUE debuted first in Japan last year, and now they're finally releasing their Korean debut mini-album. The rock band is already well known in Korea due to the popularity of guitarist and vocalist Jung Yong Hwa, who shot to fame playing Kang Shin Woo in the Korean drama You're Beautiful. With an already famous frontman and three other members who are equally young, handsome, and talented, it's no wonder that CNBLUE is expected to be the next big thing in Korea. Their first Korean mini-album Bluetory comes with five mellow rock ballads and alternative rock numbers including the first plug "I'm a Loner" by hitmakers Kim Do Hoon and Lee Sang Ho, and the Korean versions of songs like Now or Never and Love Revolution from their Japan mini-albums.

NEXT BIG THING! CNBLUE!

There's nothing that affirms one's fame in Korea like a plagiarism controversy. CNBLUE, welcome to K-pop. Rookie band CNBLUE generated some buzz when they made their indie debut in Japan last summer because of the FTIsland connection, but of course what really put them on the radar was the breakout popularity of the band's guitarist and vocalist Jung Yong Hwa after he starred in the TV drama You're Beautiful. The draw of being Kang Shin Woo's real-life band launched CNBLUE's second Japan mini-album Voice onto the bestseller list here at YesAsia.com, and spawned the kind of anticipation for their Korean debut usually reserved for fledgling idol groups. It's a nice change of pace to see this kind of excitement and fanfare for a band, and nicer yet that their debut album of alternative rock numbers deserves the attention. Setting aside the debate on whether the composition by Kim Do Hoon and Lee Sang Ho is too similar to another song by indie band Ynot?, Bluetory's main plug "I'm a Loner" (Track 1) is a fresh, catchy, and well-arranged pop rock piece. The melody, beat, and lyrics are very easy to remember, so the song carries over to K-pop audiences without trouble. At the same time, the song's construction is a lot more ambitious than your typical Korean hit, as the addictive refrain is built around multiple hooks, bridges, and rap sections with interesting alternating and layered vocal arrangement. The other four songs are all straightforward remakes, Korean versions of English songs from their Japan mini-album: Now or Never, Y, Why..., Love Revolution, and Teardrops in the Rain. Since CNBLUE handled the whole singing in English thing better than many other Asian artists, the Korean and English versions of the songs aren't too different. If you like the Korean versions, I recommend checking out their Japan mini albums as well. CNBLUE benefits greatly from having two vocalists, Jung Yong Hwa and Lee Jong Hyun, with voices similar enough to not clash and different enough to add texture and variety to their performances. Their voices play off each other well in the fun and upbeat Love Revolution, emo rock number Y, Why..., and mid-tempo rock pop Now or Never, which overcomes its cheesy lyrics with charismatic vocals and guitar riffs. Teardrops in the Rain was one of the weaker songs from their Japan releases because of the wince-inducing lyrics, but the Korean version "I Will Forget You" (Track 5) fares better, and it's worth noting that the album's one ballad is more of a gentle acoustic-style composition than the dramatic ballads of bands like FTIsland, M.C the Max, and Buzz. For a scouted prefab rock band, CNBLUE manages to pull off the indie alternative sound quite convincingly. Their music isn't all that different from what one can easily find in the American indie rock and J-rock scene, but it's refreshingly different from the current K-pop standard (instruments instead of electronic!). Whether CNBLUE can keep up their momentum and sound in an industry that doesn't let them play live half the time is hard to say, but at least people are listening and talking for their debut. It also helps that they're young and pretty. Even if CNBLUE just turns out to be idols who can play instruments, it would still be a welcome alternative. There are precious few mainstream rock bands in Korea. |

Almighty CN BLUE

Well, I just got this in the mail today and went straight to my CD player just to play this. Oh my gosh, so far I really really love the song "I'm a Loner" and "Y, Why" but all of them are just really nice. CN BLUE are just awesome and amazing. I mean, literally you don't see much indie-rock boybands in Korea nowadays except CN BLUE and FT Island. So yeah, CN BLUE's songs are enjoyable and I'm falling in love with YongHwa. YesAsia even sent it wrapped in bubble-wrap and all, in perfect condition. :D |

Look, Sound and Feel Good with CNBlue
Look, Sound and Feel Good with CNBlue

CN Blue’s five-track mini album “Blue Tory” is brilliant and really hits the mark as a fun but seriously decent rock-pop song collection. The CD features a great range of songs from the boyish band “I’m a Loner”, the more rock punchier “Love Revolution” to even a wee bit of guitar soloing on “Y Why”…and for guitar soloing…why not! All five songs nicely blend together with an overall contrast of boy pop, good doses of light rock and ballads seamlessly giving CN Blue a wide berthed debut offering here. Although thought of as a K-pop boy band with instruments, I primarily think of CN Blue as college rock (think of CN Blue with a crested shield motif), obviously with K-pop rock sensibilities but nodding towards the sounds of McFly, Roxette (are these the Swedish group?) or potentially maybe gritting themselves up for a dose of Green Day one day. Okay I realise where K-rock is positioned and CN Blue with their soft pop-rock and love rock ballads, distinctive conservative band name, clean-cut 60s style dress codes aren’t going to go all rebel yell. But adding soft rock into the K-pop mix will never go wrong…all people want to ‘rock’ and the more variety of sounds the better. CNBLue cut the balance nicely too – gritty but not too hard, tender but not too soft. The CN Blue boys are nicely crafting skills on lead guitar, bass, keyboard and drums and this added musicianship and influence is a great assert for the Korean music scene (alongside the joy of dance pop of course) and CN Blue can only do wonders here. I have read that CN Blue have supported K-pop girl bands on TV shows as backing musicians and this could bring in new flavours for future K-pop music projects. The Korean pop scene will stay ever vibrant by constant new concepts and musician-dance artist hybrids are one way to stimulate singer-song writing abilities/skills. More elaborate theatrics surely is another. Sometimes I wonder what Korean music artists would like to cover in studios (the range must be massive – J-pop, Western etc) and it’s a shame due to copyright reasons that we cannot hear cover songs by K-pop artists officially. Still, it’s the K-pop way of making fresh songs that what its really all about! Anyway, here is one the best K-rock mini albums to date and I certainly recommend you checking this out. For CN Blue surely it can only get better. Packaging is a large square booklet type with photos of the guys. |
