Wonderful love hate rom-com :D Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I thought after 2 episodes “WR” could change, and does with intrigue. But amazing WR isn’t more popular. No doubt Si-young as bagged herself a brilliant character as Eun-jae and her spunky, loveable (and jealous) emotional bodyguard, should win loads of fans. Dong wook of course goes without saying, his acting skills win you over with a very difficult to like Moo-yeol; he makes it seem so easy. And Moo-yeol’s a good man beneath his arrogance. But WR as a superb support cast, too, with Ju Eun Lim as the fantastic eccentric sleuth Dong-ah and her deadpan ‘robot’ man Tae-han, performed quite seriously by Dong Ho Kang. And boy does Dong-ah have some killer dress outfits to woe Tae-han with (I wondered why his glasses didn’t steam up)! Sun Hee and Man Seok also perform strong couple characters Soo-young and Dongsu. And these two play really lovely people, but with big problems! Although a lively, dappy love/hate comic strip romance “WR” as threaded throughout a quite dark subplot, with a sinister someone sending eye defaced photos of baseball striker Moo-yeol and dangerous situations that attempt to bring him down, either by physical harm, a scandal or emotional breakdown (in fact it gets a bit inspector Colombo on the last bit, especially with Tae-han and Dong-ah on the case).

This dark subplot never swamps the main funky love/hate romance though, albeit most characters are from unsettled and traumatic ‘all in the same boat’ pasts. Eunjae’s mom left her brother, dad and herself for a new man; Moo-yeol coerced into a life he didn’t want by his mother (and whose dad left for a new woman), finding baseball his only outlet for survival; Eunjae’s friend Dong-ah having parents who died in a car crash causing her to escape into her safe fiction books and sleuthing manner about love and intrigue; Moo-yeol’s long time girlfriend Jong-hee (Jessica) also losing her parents retains happiness by expressing loss through her surreal/abstract paintings. And even Dongsu and Soo-young are tempered by Sun-hee’s hidden stress about keeping up traditional appearances with her own ‘lost’ skill as an artistic painter like her mother, and Dongsu’s bitterness of having to drop out of baseball whereas close friend Moo-yeol gets a lucrative dollar deal as a top Blue Seagulls striker. But the main dish is the sweet jealous heart of ‘fool’ Eunjea (bless, bless, bless), eventually becoming an emotional wreck at the thought Moo-yeol’s future life would be with fragile Jong-hee.

with some sinister intrigue D: Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
For just additional mentionable I thought GG’s Jessica did good as the confident and honest but severely delicate Jong-hee (better acting than my grammar), and traumatised by her parent’s death suffers bipolar depression. Exorcised by painting out her distress onto redeeming canvas brings Jong-hee back into happiness, and giving a bright but fragile and careful personality, emoting on safe levels. But if a trauma hits her, Jong-hee goes inside herself, such as with a cat incident (part of the dark sub-plot). If fact the cat aspect is quite interesting when Jong-hee paints out her distress – all those eyes! How So-young reacts to Jong-hee’s images is also interesting relating to a person's endurance, silent stresses, suffrages which is the shared ‘boat’ theme here. People wanting to be happy across the grains of tradition, wealth, jealousy, appearances, betrayal, resentment and even love. This relates to other ‘darker’ elements of WR, of course as most of this is a fun-rom-com with all the usual ingredients you’d love to expect. But back to Jessica, she can succeed in making you feel that Jong-hee, no matter how confident and honest she is, is also shown as a very fragile and lonely lamb.

There are many other good characters and scenarios, but overall I really, really recommend you seeing this if you haven’t. I only decided to watch WR recently, already having the DVD set a bit (also just learned Si-young is a amateur boxer, too!) but as soon as viewing the first two episodes, I knew this was going to be a corker (of its type of course – it’s a K-drama rom-com). The plot is breezy and swift, very funny, Eunjae is great, too, and her emotional love jealousy making her unable to know what to do with herself (all cute in her bobbly hat and that..) Ending is okay. But I think some of this is symbolic (colours, paintings, clothing, eyes, cats, characters etc), so the ‘test’ at the baths on the final makes sense in as much a symbolic endurance as emotional. Not much baseball here though, as mostly episodes are set in Moo-yeol’s luxury apartment. Music songs are nice (they always seem to rub off on you after 16 episodes). Other bits I also liked were Eunjae and Moo-yeol’s ‘fool’ and ‘pervert’ phone names, Yeong-gil getting surprised with some water, Eunjea’s cool dark guard coat, cool Kevin Jang, Dong-ah’s versatile hot dress wardrobe, Eunjae’s face pulls and eye rolls (lol), Eunjae’s dad farting out loud…ah, many a gem there is. This is GREAT!

A really, really wild romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
A bit premature of me here as I haven’t watched many episodes from this DVD K-drama set (haven’t got to Jessica from GG yet), in fact I’ve only watched two episodes, but even so I certainly regard ‘Wild Romance’ as an excellent satirical romantic comedy; its very funny, as good pacing and superbly acted with explosive chemistry by Si-young and Dong-wook. Okay I’ve only watched two episodes, but so far…this rocks! Certainly on par with TV K-drama ‘My Girl’ and movie ‘My Sassy Girl’. I recommend it a lot if you haven’t yet seen this (me, too, with only 2 episodes watched), especially if you love kooky, romantic bash em ups (fella and gal who verbally hate each other’s pants to start with, then slowly fall in love…I guess, as I’ve yet to see episode 3 onwards).

Si Young is brilliant as the slightly unhinged tomboy bodyguard Eun Jae (Eunjae sort of reminding me of a wacky Charlene Choi character), begrudgingly ‘protecting’ baseball player Dong-wook’s Moo Yul after he gets threatening on-line hate male over his game conduct - and beating the opposing team The Seagulls a lot! And boy do these two get on each other’s…bits and bobs. Infact Eunjae’s whole family loathes Moo-Yul due to being Seagulls fans; of course Moo Yul’s feelings are mutual. It’s comic book wackiness definitely, and well crafted with irreverent and slapstick humor, but although wacky it’s not over-the-top. It’s clever, too, like when Eunjae has to wear a red frilly dress after losing to Moo Yul in a baseball game bet. Moo-yul rubbing it in as its the colour of Moo Yul’s Red Dreamers team…and Eunjae embarrassed as she’s a tomboy. Other good parts are Dong-ho Kang’s pokerfaced character Tae-han whose deadpan humor give this a great-added bonus (as too will Jessica when I get to her parts). Of course the plot will probably go all emo, but thus far Dong Wook and Si Young are just great in this ‘verses’ mode romance. ^__^ Don’t miss this!
