The illicit and forbidden nature of the teacher–student romance is carefully dissected in A Secret Scandal, directed by Shin Jeong Gyun (Twenty, Samyangdong Butcher's Shop), son of legendary Korean filmmaker Shin Sang Ok.

When the advances of a passionate young student unmask his teacher's innermost desires, the bewildered teacher is thrust into an unwanted spotlight where she must choose between the socially acceptable norms and a risky love affair that could jeopardize her future. Viscerally conveying the frustration of the love-stricken teacher is Suh Lin, best known for her gripping role in Road Movie and the sci-fi thriller Natural City, in which she played a mysterious cyborg. Her young onscreen lover is portrayed by ex-child actor Lee Joon (Muoi), who delivers a fine performance as a precocious high school student who falls desperately in love with his young art teacher.

Nineteen year old Hyun Woo (Lee Joon) is thrilled when he meets his new art teacher Sun Ah (Suh Lin), who happens to be his longtime boyhood crush. The two first met when Sun Ah was teaching as an assistant teacher at Hyun Woo's middle school and ever since, Hyun Woo has held a special place in his heart for his 27-year-old teacher. One day, Sun Ah gets into trouble after being caught smoking in a classroom by a fellow teacher. But when Hyun Woo gladly takes the blame for her misdeed, the two become closer than ever. Trapped in a loveless relationship with a soon-to-marry partner, Sun Ah finds Hyun Woo's raw energy irresistible and before long passion flares between the two, sending them beyond the realm of the rational.

중학교 시절 교생과 학생의 인연을 맺었던 두 사람이 있다. 선아와 현우. 현우의 선아에 대한 그리움은 고등학교까지 이어지고 이들은 다시 고등학교에서 조금 더 성숙해진 상태로 해후를 하게 된다. 선아의 흡연 사건으로 둘은 친밀해지고 이어서 알게 되는 현우와 선아의 인연. 중학교 시절 그 조그맣고 귀여웠던 현우가 훌쩍 커버린 아이로 선아에게 다가온다. 아이지만 아이로 느껴지지 않는다. 선아는 애인에게서 느끼지 못했던 두근거림을 경험하게 된다. 하지만 상대는 미성년이자 자신의 제자. 여행 중 취중에 보였던 행동으로 현우는 조금 더 진지하게 자신에게 다가오지만, 선아는 현우처럼 마냥 감정만으로 상대를 대할 수는 없다.

규범과 감정 사이에서 갈등하는 선아. 그러나 무조건 감정만을 들이미는 현우. 속내를 보인다는 것과 선의의 거짓말을 한다는 것. 양자 사이에서 둘은 종교적 공간에 위치하게 되고, 진실만이 존재해야 하는 절대 규범의 장소에서 선아는 역설적이게도 감정을 선택하게 된다. 그리고 둘의 어설픈 첫 경험. 그러나 어설프기에 사랑스럽게 느껴지는.. 둘의 사랑은 마냥 즐겁고 행복할 수가 없다. 삶이 그러하듯 문학이 그러하듯 언제나 장애물은 있기 마련. 현우, 그 장애물을 극복하고자 한다. 그러나 그 장애물은 자신의 사촌 형. 상황은 역전되고 현우 자신이 사촌 형과 선아 사이의 방해자로 전락한다. 그리고 그 사이에서 다시 갈등하게 되는 선아. 선택하기가 어렵다. 인준은 규범이 허락하는 사랑이지만 현우는 규범을 거역하는 사랑이기 때문이다.

양가 상견례까지 마치고 부케까지 받은 상황. 그러나 둘 사이에서의 갈등. 현우의 비아냥. 인준의 의심. 그리고 자신에게 화두를 던진 채 죽는 선아의 어머니. 끊임없는 양자 간의 선택의 고민 속에서 선아는 음성 메시지를 남긴다. 그리고 바로 걸려오는 현우의 전화와 선아의 음성 메시지를 듣는 인준. 잘못 전달된 음성 메시지는 세 명의 만남을 주선하게 된다. 셋이 다시 만나는 자리, 그러나 현우와 선아의 정사. 그리고 이를 목격하는 인준. 인준의 분노, 그리고 이어지는 현우의 사고.
