Asian Short Film & Video Competition Award Winners of International Women's Film Festival In Seoul (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Celebrating its tenth year of recognizing the remarkable achievements of women filmmakers, International Women's Film Festival In Seoul (IWFFIS) presents Asian Short Film and Video Competition Award Winners of International Women's Film Festival In Seoul, an exquisite DVD collection featuring nine award-winning short films by extraordinary female directors. Asian Short Film and Video Competition is the only competing category in the event which provides emerging female filmmakers with access to promote their films. As its famous slogan "See the world through women's eyes!" suggests, IWFFIS continues to make great efforts in enhancing the visibility and advancement of women in filmmaking.

To Be (dir. Park Chan Ok, 1996, 16mm, 4 min: Winner of First Prize and People's Choice Award at the 1st IWFFIS)
To Be is directed by Park Chan Ok who would go on to receive the VPRO Tiger Award at the 32nd International Film Festival Rotterdam for his debut feature film Jealousy Is My Middle Name (2002). The film explores the complexity of bisexuality, sexual harassment, and victimization from a woman's point of view. While squashed inside a crowded train, Hee Jung feels someone fondling her body. Suddenly the train jerks causing Hee Jung's hands to brush up against a woman's buttocks. Feeling a jolt of ecstasy, Hee Jung continues to grope the woman who doesn't seem to protest in any way.

Oh! Beautiful Life (dir. Kim In Suk, 2002, DV, 15 min: Winner of First Prize at the 5th IWFFIS)
A coming-of-age tale inspired by director Kim's personal experience and feelings of uncertainty about her future upon college graduation, this hip-hop musical delight begins with the protagonist giving a rap performance at a job interview where she fabricates the story of her life, making it seem somewhat larger-than-life.

Feel Good Story (dir. Lee Kyoung Mi, 2004, 16 mm, 36 min: Winner of Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at the 6th IWFFIS)
In this charming, lighthearted comedy, director Lee Kyoung Mi addresses the complexity of human relationships and office politics in today's workplace. Newly hired Ji Young is what most employers refer to as a dream employee: hard-working and dedicated. But having a perfect resume welcomes trouble as her manager orders her to take part in facilitating the company's tax evasion plans. Not only that, she must work together with her office nemesis Hee Jin, a disgruntled co-worker who's been handling the task for many years. As friction mounts between the two co-workers, a fire breaks out in the office building.

Garivegas (dir. Kim Sun Min, 2005, Beta, 19 min: Winner of First Prize at the 7th IWFFIS)
A heart-warming humanistic drama that examines our ever-changing social climate, Garivegas tells the story of Sun Hwa who is about to leave Garibong-dong (a district in Seoul) due to her company's recent decision to relocate. Once considered the mecca of industrial modernization and the symbol of working class females, Garibong has since undergone a major change, emerging as the nation's new digital media hotspot. Such transformation resulted in a massive influx of foreign workers hoping to fulfill their Korean dreams. As Sun Hwa prepares for her departure, she is struck by a huge wave of emotions.

Flowering Day (dir. Kim Bo Jeong, 2005, Digi-Beta, 38 min: Winner of Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at the 7th IWFFIS)
Promising director Kim Bo Jeong weaves an intricate and compelling family story about a father, a mother, and a daughter who are all experiencing symptoms of menstruation in one form or another. Teenage daughter Young Hoo falls for a boy who rescues her from embarrassment when her skirt gets stained with menstrual blood. Sadly, her middle-aged mother, fearing that she may hit menopause any time soon, decides to lock her heart away forever. Meanwhile the father bleeds in pain as he struggles to let go of his past love.

You Will Know (dir. Kim Young Jae, 2007, 35 mm, 22 min: Winner of Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at the 9th IWFFIS)
The use of oppression and ill-doings in pursuit of power exists in any level of social hierarchy. This stylish film revolves around a secret deal struck between two people who belong to the bottom layer of the social pyramid: a substitute science teacher who desperately wants a full-time position and a conniving student who would trade anything for good grades.

Peekaboo: To Be / Not To Be (dir. Lee Kyoung, 1999, Beta, 20 min: Winner of First Prize at the 2nd IWFFIS)
In her first documentary film shot on home video camera, director Lee Kyoung offers a genuine portrait of what it means to be a housewife in today's Korean society. Through a number of interviews, mainly of her real-life friends and neighbors, Lee exposes the true faces of Korean housewives who are often in conflict between pursuing their own dreams and fulfilling their traditional roles in society as good wives and good mothers.

Drying Red Pepper (dir. Jang Hee Sun, 1999, 16 mm, 54 min: Winner of First Prize and People's Choice Award at the 2nd IWFFIS)
Often times, families become too close for comfort, causing one to lose sight of the individuals that constitute a family. Each family member takes on many different roles within the family structure; and too often the individual will be pigeonholed into his or her given roles. This film encourages the audience to look and think beyond those borders, thereby cultivating better family relationships.

Family Project: House of a Father (dir. Jo Yun Kyoung, 2001, Beta, 52 min: Winner of Grand Prize at the 4th IWFFIS)
The film explores the changing patterns of Korean culture, in particular the transformation of gender roles within Korean families which has long been characterized by patriarchal dominance.
