YesAsia Editorial Description
Jung Woo Sung was Born To Kill! In Jang Hyun Soo's gripping thriller, the star of Musa The Warrior and A Moment to Remember portrays the orphan Kil, who is gradually pushed into a career as a killer after his single-parent mother decides to commit suicide. Working as an assassin for a deadly underworld syndicate, Kil seems destined to spend the rest of his life as a killer for hire. The only person who is able to offer him some kind of comfort is bar waitress Soo Ha (Shim Eun Ha, Christmas in August) whom he encounters by change. One fateful day Soo Ha collapses on the street and is discovered by Kil. He sees no other alternative but to take her back to his home - a decision that leads to drastic changes for both of them.

Shame on Winson!
|
"Born To Kill" appears to have been inspired by Kazuo Koike's famous Crying Freeman saga. Jung Woo Sung plays Gill, a man trapped by fate into being a master assassin for a thoroughly evil mid-level mob boss. Detesting his life, Gill lives alone and shuts himself off from the world. One day Gill stumbles upon drunken bar hostess Soo Ha (Shim Eun Ha), whom Gill picks up off the street. Willful Soo Ha becomes a demanding whirlwind that shatters Gill's oddly static existence. When one of Gill's assassination targets offers him a revelation into his hidden past, Gill is unable to complete the hit. Soon Gill finds himself at odds with his employer and all heck is about to break loose. The film is uneven, and uneven in ways that are unexpected. The relationship between Gill and Soo Ha is believable and, ultimately, quite affecting. The Soo Ha character is not particularly likeable for much of the film and Shim Eun Ha is not afraid to play up her character's faults. The action, which I would have expected to be handled well sometimes goes way over the top, particularly in the movie's climactic brawl, and the cinematographic tricks employed in some of the fight scenes are a silly distraction. Those of us who view this film on the DVD issued by Winson Entertainment are at a considerable disadvantage. The image quality of the Winson DVD is beyond murky. In some darkly lit scenes it becomes impossible to discern facial expressions and sometimes nearly impossible to discern action. Moreover, the Winson DVD's English subtitles are of poor quality. Shame on Winson for seeking to profit from such shoddy work. |
