YesAsia Editorial Description

Despite having no big names in the cast, KBS drama Baker King, Kim Tak Goo (a.k.a. Bread, Love and Dreams) blew away the competition to become the highest-rated series of 2010. Set in 1970-80s Korea, the melodrama about family feuds, romantic rivalry, youthful dreams, and the pursuit of bread reached "national drama" status with viewership ratings of over 40%. High Kick Through the Roof's breakout star Yoon Si Yoon makes his leading man debut as the eponymous hero, a hot-blooded young man with a nose for baking and a propensity for trouble. Baker King, Kim Tak Goo co-stars Eugene, Lee Young Ah, acclaimed actor Chun Kwang Ryul, and newcomer Joo Won as Tak Goo's stepbrother and rival.

Kim Tak Goo (Yoon Si Yoon) did not have it easy growing up. The illegitimate son of baking industry legend Goo Il Jong (Chun Kwang Ryul), Tak Goo ran away from home as a child, and spent 12 years living off the streets, picking fights, and searching for his missing mother. His relentless search brings him to a bakery where he gets a fresh start, winning over hearts with his earnest personality and natural talent for baking. Tak Goo gradually crosses paths again with the people from his past, including his childhood sweetheart Yoo Kyung (Eugene) and jealous stepbrother Ma Joon (Joo Won), who is training at the same bakery and also in love with Yoo Kyung. Tak Goo just wants to bake bread, but Ma Joon is determined to beat him in and out of the kitchen. What's more, Tak Goo's father wants him to take over the family business, and his scheming stepmother (Jeon In Hwa) will stop at nothing to get him out of the picture.

Nothing brings family together like bread
Yoon Si Yoon, Lee Young Ah, Eugene, and Joo Won don't exactly sound like a cast for the biggest Korean drama of the year, but Baker King, Kim Tak Goo (a.k.a. Bread, Love and Dreams) dominated ratings from beginning to end during its 30-episode summer run. Despite the lack of big stars, the drama brought in big numbers, reaching a viewership rating of 49% for its final episode. Dramas with idols and Korean Wave stars might generate the most buzz overseas and among young online fans, but it takes a whole family of viewers to reach national drama status, and Baker King attracted all generations by successfully combining trendy drama and family melodrama elements.

Instead of Korean Wave stars, Baker King is headlined by two next-generation actors bound for Korean Wave stardom, fast-rising High Kick Through the Roof heartthrob Yoon Si Yoon and Kang Dong Won-lookalike newcomer Joo Won. Yoon and Joo play half-brothers who become rivals in baking, business, and romance, largely because of the conflicts of the older generation. There's a juicy laundry list of backstabbing, scheming, and green-eyed missteps going on to keep the audience hooked, but most of this high-maintenance family and corporate drama is wisely left in the hands of more experienced actors (Chun Kwang Ryul, Jung Sung Mo, and Jun In Hwa).

While the older cast delivers the soap opera, the younger cast deals with emotional and moral conflicts in trendy drama fashion: angst, romantic triangles, and bread. Jealousy and revenge are very much at play among the younger generation as well, but the characters and clashes remain sympathetic (and photogenic), and Yoon Si Yoon and Lee Young Ah's characters are so stubbornly sunny, they keep the drama's hope for a happy ending afloat. Plus, they spend a lot of journeyman time discovering the zen of baking at a mom-and-pop bakery. You can't go wrong with baking competitions!

Baker King also subtly plays up its setting and background to good effect. The drama opens in the seventies, though the sets and costumes look so dated that the time period is unclear. Jumping forward in time, the eighties are modern enough to almost pass for present day, but the fashion and hairstyles (of the women, less so for the men) bring the viewers back twenty years, as do the references to student protests. Baker King's story could easily be set in the present day, but the eighties setting adds to its draw. The mansion scenes have the air of an old-fashioned grand family drama, while the bakery and its picturesque neighborhood environs are quaintly nostalgic.

Even the length of Baker King is ideal for those looking for something in between the made-for-export Korean Wave dramas and the long family series that are popular in Korea but rarely make it to English-subtitled DVD. At 30 episodes, it's longer than the typical trendy drama, shorter than the daily and weekend family melodramas, and effectively appeals to fans of both genres.

Editing of US version (English) Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
This comment does not refer to the drama's content but to its edition which is an example of getting what
you pay for. This US version of the drama is really poorly edited. The visuals of the first chapters are
time and again disrupted by blurred images and a disturbing unrelated icon (commercial?) that turns up
and makes its round through the screen every now and then in all episodes. Even more disturbing is the
fact that there is not put much effort in the English subtitles. They are not only more reduced than
necessary but often inaccurate or misleading, sometimes wrong and especially towards the last episodes
full of typing errors.
