Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do (DVD) (Single Disc) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Adapted from a novel written by popular internet writer Guiyeoni whose past credit includes Temptation of the Wolf and He was Cool, Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do is a coming-of-age drama about three teenagers and their search for the meaning of love, romance, and friendship. In his first leading role, rising star Jang Keun Suk (Crazy Waiting) portrays the lead vocalist of a band named Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do opposite up-and-coming starlet Cha Ae Rin (Bad Love), who plays a feisty young woman caught up in a complicated love dilemma. The film drew much attention even before its release, mainly due to the massive popularity of leading man Jang, whose amazing singing talent even sparked a rumor of a possible singing career for the actor, as well as his romantic flair in the much-publicized kissing scene with Cha Ae Rin.

For Jung Won (Cha Ae Rin) and her boyfriend Eun Kyu (Jang Keun Suk), their first encounter was truly a scene taken out of a comic book. It all started when Eun Kyu began rubbing her the wrong way by making fun of her droll-looking dragon mask which she was wearing for her part-time gig. But it is Eun Kyu who becomes the laughingstock when Jung Won pours soda all over him. Then one day, Eun Kyu, now her new neighbor, catches Jung Won jumping through the rooftop secretly on her way to her part-time job. He threatens to squeal the truth to her parents unless she agrees to carry his guitar for a whole week. That turns out to be a blessing in disguise as it sparks a romance between the two and soon they start dating each other. But trouble looms when Jung Won's first love Hee Won (Jung Eui Chul) pops out of nowhere revealing some juicy secrets about their past love affair.

Professional Review of "Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do (DVD) (Single Disc) (Korea Version)"

November 3, 2009

Teen angst raises its head once more with Korean drama Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do from helmer Kang Geon Hyang and online novelist Guiyeoni, who also gave the genre He Was Cool and Romance of Their Own. The film treads a similar path to these earlier efforts, again revolving around a love triangle and packing in plenty of melodrama, though this time with somewhat of a musical twist. More so than for its plot, the film is likely to be of interest thanks to its hip cast of young performers, with the hotly tipped actor Jang Geun Suk (recently in Crazy Waiting) and promising actress Cha Ae Rin (Bad Love) as the star-crossed leads, and with able support from Jung Euh Cheol.

The film begins as the unlikely couple of the obtuse tomboy Jung Won (Cha Ae Rin) and the handsome ladies' man and rock band singer Eun Kyu (Jang Geun Suk) get together after some playful flirting, seemingly destined for cute romance and lots of smiles. Unfortunately, there turns out to be a fly in the ointment in the form of Eun Kyu's band mate Hee Won (Jung Euh Cheol), who just happens to be Jung Won's first love, with whom she shares a tragic secret. Inevitably, this disrupts not only their budding relationship but also the friendship between the two guys, raking up old ghosts and past miseries, threatening the happiness of all concerned and, worse still, the success of the band.

Although it may sound like a fairly typical teen romantic triangle affair, Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do actually has a fair bit of depth, mainly since writer Guiyeoni invests a good amount of time in the characters, ensuring that they are all fully fleshed out and interesting. This is particularly true in the case of Jung Won, who makes for a complex and conflicted female lead, and whilst Eun Kyu and Hee Won are rather more conventional prince charming figures, they are at least reasonably human, despite their tendency to spout cornball lines at the drop of a hat. The plot itself is standard stuff, though well worked by the standards of the genre, managing to throw in enough emotional conflict to keep the viewer wondering as to who will end up with who, and whether or not everyone will remain friends after the last tear has been cried. Naturally, things do get progressively more melodramatic, with the cast spending a large part of the running time with moist eyes, and although there is a little too much in the way of cliche montage sequences (mostly revolving around characters wandering the streets glumly at night or staring longingly into the distance), the time spent with the characters in the earlier stages means that the viewer does care about what happens to them. As such, the film has a decent emotional payoff, and is surprisingly moving in places. Thankfully, there are also a few laughs scattered throughout, and director Kang weaves in a few amusing subplots to distract from the over-familiarity of it all.

There is a great deal of music in the film, most of which should be enjoyed by fans of teen pop and rock, and the songs do ensure that the proceedings remain lively, especially during the upbeat tracks. In fact, a few more of these wouldn't have hurt, with the slower and more maudlin songs being a few too many in number, especially towards the end. Wisely, a lot of the music turns up via the band's practice sessions and live concerts, which is certainly more acceptable than had it simply been used as an omnipresent and intrusive background score. Kang's direction also helps, being in a far less cutesy style than usual for the genre, and although it would be going a little far to call the film grounded, it does come across as being more believable than usual, if perhaps a little too close to television drama.

Still, this in itself isn't really a criticism, as Do-Re-Mi-Pa-Sol-Ra-Si-Do achieves its modest aims. A quintessential mixture of coming of age drama and teen romance, it ranks as a must see for fans for the form or the stars, and will definitely engage and entertain its target audience. Certainly above average for its type, although unlikely to win the genre any converts, it should also be enjoyed by anyone looking for an emotional ride or a well-handled tale of love and friendship.

Up Scale Melodrama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
“Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si-Do” is likeable and breezy coming of age teen drama about a trio of mixed up romantics, featuring an assortment of gentle and charming, cool and spunky, sweet and brittle, along with your accustomed Korean teen romance dilemmas. The rock band chick music elements additionally help to makes this a likable Korean youth movie. You should certainly enjoy this if you liked Korean films “He’s So Cool”, “Romance Of Their Own” and “Fly High”.

Like “Romance Of Their Own”, it’s another story of a girl torn between two guys. Spunky Jung Won (Ye Ryun Cha) becoming smitten with cheeky cool neighbour Eun Gyu (Geun Suk Jang), lead singer of band “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si-Do”. But when Jung Won finds her previous ex-boyfriend Hee Won (Jung Euh Cheol) is also the band’s bass guitarist and close friend of Eun Gyu, causes difficult rifts throughout. One problem being Jung Won had caused Hee Won’s father to be put in jail and of her getting beat up by Hee Won’s ham fisted friends for doing so. Real quirky filled relationship stuff here!

Emotions swing from one schizoid extreme to another (which I noticed happening in SBS drama “The Lovers”). Like when Jung Won saves Hee See from jumping off a building, beseechingly giving her heart to him, for her next to be eating merrily in a restaurant with Eun Gyu. So you might get a hanky out for a quick cry and have to put it back again. Still, you certainly feel sympathy for Hee See’s ill fortune (although him getting Jung Won beat up was a bit rich), and Jung Won’s love situation of what to do for the best for the two boys. (“Eni-Mini-Miny-Mo”, could be a song choice here!) Eun Gyu’s mind splitting emotions over his frustrated love for Jung Won can also be a little OTT. In fact “Mel-Oh-Dra-Ma-Tic” could be a more suitable alternative competition song. Eun Gyu’s head splits into two (well nearly) before Jung Won’s heart can by the finish. In fact melodramatic is an understatement. A UFO landing on the music competition stage, with actor Tae-gyu Bong coming out of it and telling the audience that HE was really Jung Won’s long lost love, wouldn’t have been out of place!

But this film is a good teen rom-com and I really enjoyed it. I certainly appreciated having a signed copy by Ye Ryeon Cha (a lovely surprise, thank you YR). Cool. So, good romantic fun yoof style, a bit of over the top emotions, but all highly likeable! Recommended!
