Professional Review of "Fortune Salon (DVD) (2-Disc) (First Press Edition) (Korea Version)"
|
Although the Korean romantic comedy genre must surely be running out of wacky premises by now, director Kim Jin Young (My Baby and I) comes out with a twist of sorts with Fortune Salon. As the title suggests, the film revolves around fortune telling and destiny, with a winning pair of leads in the form of Sex is Zero favourite and veteran comic star Lim Chang Jung, and actress Park Ye Jin (Life is Cool). Backing the stars are an appealing supporting cast which includes Seo Young Hee (recently in The Chaser), Seo Yoo Jeong (Someone Behind You), and Lee Joon Hyuk (Three Brothers).
The plot follows Park Ye Jin as Tae Rang, a glamorous fortune teller who works in the titular salon in the upmarket Cheongdam district of Seoul. Although she is an expert in offering love advice to her many clients, the poor girl has a big problem herself when it comes to finding a man, with her mother having effectively cursed her by telling her that she is destined to be with a man born on May 16, 1978 at 11 p.m. Since prior experience has taught her that all other men tend to fall foul of accidents in her presence, she takes this prediction very seriously. Her resolve is severely tested when she meets Seung Won (Lim Chang Jung), a man born on that date and at that specific time – and who just happens to be everything she is most definitely not looking for in a partner. Fortune Salon does indeed offer something a little different to the usual My Sassy Girl-clone Korean romantic comedies, not so much due to its premise, but rather thanks to the amusing and engaging dynamic between the two leads. Lim Chang Jung always makes for a good comedic hangdog wretch, though here he plays somewhat more of a lout, who genuinely does not seem to like Park Ye Jin’s fortune teller despite her being gorgeous, rich, and weirdly desperate to date him. During the early stages of the film, their courtship consists mainly of bickering and his trying to get whatever he can for her, and this makes for an entertaining mismatched couples vibe. Both stars are on game, charismatic form, and there is a real chemistry between the two as they play off each other. Of course, during the last third of the film his behaviour suddenly improves as things take a dive into more romantic territory. This tone never works quite as well as the comedy, but since the characters are likeable it is at least never offensive or too melodramatic. The twin themes of destiny and opposites attracting are laid on quite thickly by director Kim, and while the final act could have done with a touch of trimming, though it still remains comfortable and pleasant enough viewing. The film does enjoy this kind of breezy feel throughout, with most of the jokes being bawdy without ever becoming too crude. The script itself is reasonably witty, if not particularly creative, and it does have a few real laugh out loud moments, mainly thanks to Lim. The fortune telling gimmick is quite well handled and is taken surprisingly respectfully, whilst also allowing for a good number of anecdotal gags, with generally good scenes featuring oddball customers being interspersed throughout. Unsurprisingly, the plot mostly develops via daft misunderstandings, and this fits well with the inherently daft premise, and it helps that Kim has the sense never to take things too seriously. Although basically the usual suspects, the supporting cast are all likeable enough, and their various relationships and nonsense are engaging as background concerns.
Kim’s direction is appropriately colourful, and he keeps things moving along at a good pace, final act excess not withstanding. He does drop the ball a couple of times, falling into some of the less welcome clichés of the romantic comedy form, in particular with a few montages and an obligatory nightclub scene thrown in for no reason other than to inject a little hip music and dancing. This really isn’t much of a crime, though it certainly doesn’t do anything more than pad out the running time.

You got a lovely girl Tae Rang(park ye jin) who is on the dot with your fortune even if you may not like it. Sure as hell shuts people up when they try to yell at her for something and she starts reading their fortune which is all true. For her own fortune, she has to find her true destiny or give bad luck to all the other felllows she tries to date. Then you have the opposite of all girls dreams Seung Won(Lim Chang Jung) who makes a living attempting(you'll see what i mean in the movie) to taking urine samples of horses. Not even sure if he even makes a living doing that either since he is about to be evicted from his home. They are definitely destined to meet, but is it fortunate or unfortunately when Tae Rang finds out that Seung Won isn't her true destiny..... Bought this mainly for park ye jin after watching family outing, but to my surprise Lim Chang Jung was also in this which made it a plus. I really thought it was funny when Tae Rang got into an accident or well caused an accident and was being yelled at by the stranger. She then told the person's fortune and the person changed his expression asking for help right away. I would too if a fortune teller could just instantly tell me events that happened recently or in the past. The ending was great too. I had a good laugh there as well. anyways if you don't know park ye jin. you might be entertained watching lim chang jung if you've seen his movies. |

A near miss
|
"Fortune Salon" squanders a premise that should have yielded comic gold. Park Ye Jin stars as Tae Rang, the glam lead attraction at a salon that boasts three colorful fortune tellers. Thirty-two year old Tae Rang is unmarried and getting desperate to find her mate. Her problem is that her pool of potential husbands is quite small. When she was a small child, Tae Rang's mother gave her an amulet that contained a charm that destined her to marry only a man born on May 16, 1978 at 11 p.m. If she marries anyone not born at that time, bad luck will befall her. However, when she encounters a man who apparently was born at just that time, it appears that bad luck might be preferable to marriage to this jerk. The potential husband is Seung Won (Lim Chang Jung), a shiftless, obnoxious, unattractive and just plain nasty man whose poor-paying job consists of collecting urine samples from race horses for drug tests. Tae Rang feels she must make the best of a bad situation and determines to marry the bum. Seung Won soon undergoes a (literally) unbelievable transformation. He cleans himself up, becomes indispensable in attracting new business to the fortune salon, and acquires a nobility of character that previously seemed entirely absent. However, just as it appears that Tae Rang and Seung Won will make a truly happy couple, complications arise that seem to make their impending marriage impossible. I found Tae Rang's transformation from heel to hero to be simply preposterous, so unbelievable that it prevented me from buying into the movie's premise. The film also suffers from disconcerting shifts in tone and some quite rough editing, giving it a feel of being a preliminary draft rather than a finished product. On the other hand, "Fortune Salon" does deliver some good laughs, particularly in its fortune-telling scenes, and the two lead actors manage to develop a good chemistry over the course of the film. I suspect that this movie could have been improved significantly by being recut and re-edited. |

Chang-jung’s lucky love numbers
|
Like many of Chang-jung’s previous characters, Seung Won lacks a woman in his life. As a horse urine sample taker (a pi** take joke here?) a relegated job from Seung Won’s horse jockey racer past, his career credentials don’t help woo the fair sex and Seung Won certainly wouldn’t want horse urine as after shave (it’s quite pi**able he could in a film like this!). Seung Won is also lazy, loud and eccentric. Love woos aplenty. But Tae Rang (Ye-jin Park), a locale Buddhist fortune tarot card reader, as already decided Seung Won is her man, due to Tae Rang’s shamanistic mother foretelling Tae Rang in childhood that whenever Tae Rang meets a man in adulthood whose born on 16th May 1978 at 11.00 p.m. (just before the owls come out!), Tae Rang should marry him or both could come to great harm. Being a small World Seung Won’s birthday is ‘synchronized’ to Tae Rang’s mystical fate date and when Tae Rang first bumps into Seung Won in her car, flinging him in the air and injuring his arm, harm certainly seems to be the operative word by first impressions. But according to the ‘fates decree’ Tae Rang and Seung Won are predestined to fall in love, due to the magic red carpet moment of 16th May 1978 at 11’ o’clock. But Tae Rang finds Seung Won to be everything she doesn’t want in a man (the horse urine doesn’t help) and grits her teeth when dating him. But Seung Won’s heart is sincere and falls in love with Tae Rang. To make things more complicated a suave suitor also takes a shine to Tae Rang. “Fortune Salon” is a well clichéd rom-com, but wins over by Chang-jung and Ye-jin’s excellent comedy love partnership. Tae Rang smiling through adversity for her ‘fated man’, but eventually becoming smitten by Seung Won’s determined love for Tae Rang and his caring heart to her aging mother is endearing. But the lovely bits are short lived when Tae Rang discovers Seung Won lies about his birth date. Bringing questions about fate and its relevance over love. Tarot cards are random slight of hand and the complexity in one card and its systematic language cannot fail to woo susceptible minds (similar to Black Jack). It’s a magician’s trick with a Magician as one of the tarot’s major arcana. I mean I was born two days before Seung Won’s birth date and my mother was born on the same date as Geun-yeong Moon (May 6th). But that doesn’t mean GY is my mum or I’m nearly as daft as Seung Won where love is concerned! Anyway, good Korean romance comedy capers this! |
