Director: Hu King Chuan
胡金銓導演曾於康城影展獲獎，1978年被英國《國際電影指南》選為世界五大導演。此部抗日戰爭片，為胡氏1964年自編自導自演的首部作品，於1966年金馬獎獲最佳編劇、最佳剪輯（姜興隆）及最佳發揚民族精神特別獎，被評為「寫中華兒女的愛國熱誠，演導活潑，內容很有深度」。故事描寫二次世界大戰期間，國人奮起抗日的事蹟；除胡氏粉墨登場外，主要演員還包括樂蒂、陳厚、夏儀秋及陳燕燕。
Japan has Akira Kurosawa. India has Satyajit Ray. Hong Kong has King Hu. Although he made a previous film, The Story Of Sue San, uneder Li Han-hsiang’s supervision, this was really his first full film, which he wrote, directed and co-starred in. His tale of the Sino-Japanese war is still an artistic and emotional triumph, and went on to win awards for Best Script, Best Editing, and the particularly prestigious Special Award for the Promotion of Ethnic Spirit.

An Exciting War Drama
|
The storyline is somewhat of a rehash of "Seventh Heaven". From this storyline, King Hu instilled very strongly the concept of war and guerilla warfare. It was said that this movie was severely truncated before its original release. This took some of the impact out of the movie. Nevertheless, what's left is still enough to keep one quite absorbed until the finale. There was a very long war scene with Peter Chen Ho. War scenes, such as the one in "Too Late For Love" seems to serve no purpose except to show off Shaw Bro's budget for big movies. It deters from the plot and becomes quite boring. It has to be King Hu's credit that the war scene in this movie has the audienced attention grasped totally. The war scene was very well intergrated into the movie's plot, which starts off as a love story. Gradually, the main characters lives are drawn into the war and their little world becomes replaced by that of a nation's turmoil. The family cannot exists without the country, and all are drawn into defending the country inorder to maintain the family. Betty Ledi's starring role of the orphan girl was actually a supporting role. Nevertheless, whenever she does appear, she brightens up the screen. Peter Chen Ho does well in his role, but Lee Kun was more of the scene stealer. |
