影片從一個四世同堂的大家庭的衰弱反映了封建禮教的虛偽殘酷和一代青年的覺醒。這是一個表面昌盛和睦的家庭﹐高老太爺子長子已逝﹐其他的兒子克明﹑克安﹑克定不務正業﹐終日沉溺於吃喝嫖賭。長孫覺新同姨表妹相戀卻不能自結姻緣﹐各自依從父母之命結了婚。覺新的二弟覺民和姑表妹要好﹐三弟覺慧正與丫鬟鳴鳳相愛﹐但他們的愛情卻遭到家庭的摧殘﹐鳴鳳被逼做妾之際投水自殺﹐琴躲避軍閥逼婚逃出家門。不久軍閥混戰﹐梅同母親來高府避亂﹐與覺新相遇更覺傷感﹐覺新和妻子瑞鈺同情他們﹐但三人都很痛苦。梅歸家後在傷感中抱病而死去。高老太爺臥病不起﹐克安兄弟和陳姨太一邊准備後事一邊爭奪家產﹐瑞鈺因難產生下兒子後死去。覺新痛苦之中終於認識到自己的軟弱﹐支持了二弟三弟的反抗行動。
This film reflects falsity and cruelty of feodal courtesy and a generation's disillision by means of a big family of four genetations.It's a harmonious family on the surface.Grandfather Gao's eldest son has already died,and the other sons Ke Ming ,Ke An and Ke Ding don't attend to their own proper works and are addicted themselves to beer and skittles all the day .The eldest grandson Jue Xin and his aunt-cousin Mei fall in love without marriage and marries others in accordance with their parents' will. Jue Xin's 2nd younger brother Jue Ming gets well along with his cross-cousin Qin and Jue Xin's 3rd younger brother Jue Hui loves his servant girl Ming Feng.But both the two brother's love is wrecked by the family.Ming Feng commited suicide when she is forced to be a concubine and Qin fleed away in order to evade warloads .Soon,warloads scuffle.Mei come to Gao mansion to aviod turmoil with her mother and flees much sadder seeing Jue Xin.Jue Xin and his wife Rui Yu feel for them ,thus making the three persons more painful.Mei dies from illness at home .Grandfather Gao is confined to bed ,while Ke An brothers and Aunt Cheng are preparing runeral affairs and scrambling for riches at the same time.Rui Yu dies because of dystocia after giving birth to a son.Jue Xin relaizes his mistake of flabbiness and supports his 2nd and 3rd brothers resistance .This film was filmized on the base of Ba Jin's novel of the same name.
