　　中年喪偶的父親（王引）愛上了同年紀的小學校長（王萊），雖有續弦之意，卻又感於兒女的不悅而躇不前。兒女方面，兩個小兒子（鄧小宇、鄧小宙）固然惦念著亡母，長女（尤敏）更立誓要身兼母職將幼弟撫養成人，那怕犧牲自己的青春和教育機會。這樣的故事可以發生在任何家庭。但在張愛玲筆下，卻道盡了生命的無可奈何。影片可觀的地方是它的細節，和處處流露出人情世故的筆觸，大團圓式的結局雖然為了要照顧市場而稍嫌流於容易和理想化，但仍不損影片的溫煦情。兩屆亞洲影展影后尤敏在片中有一貫動人的演出，與王引繼《玉女私情》後再演父女，仍充滿情趣。片中的美術和佈景也具見功力，從中可勾勒出一幅六十年代初期香港新興中產階級的生活面貌。
　　International Screen, the official magazine of Cathay Organization, has this to describe Father Takes a Bride "What is a hoe without a mother" is perhaps the main theme of MP & GI's latest drama, Father Takes a Bride, which stars Lucilla You Min as the daughter of a widower who plans to remarry. Fearing that her two younger brothers would suffer under a step-mother, Lucilla is determined to "save" them. Mos probably another star vehicle for Lucilla after her success in playing a young adult daughter in Her Tender Heart in 1959, Father reverses the plot of the former film by having Lucilla rebels against her father instead of the mother. Written by renowned novelist Eileen Chang, who contributes to the film a subtlety rarely found in the Hong Kong cinema, the film is also remarkable for its exquisite set designs and a memorable score by the Japanese composer, R. Hitori.
