本片以一宗珠寶失竊和三角戀情為故事骨幹，「奧斯卡」得主積尼高遜、米高堅首次合作。雅歷(積尼高遜飾)，表面是一個忠實的酒商，其實他的財政一向陷於困境。他有個誘人的妻子蘇珊(茱迪戴維斯飾)、性感的拉丁美洲人姬寶娜(珍妮花洛比庇思飾)、紅色的開蓬寶馬... 可惜他的婚姻出現危機，與繼子謝遜(史提芬杜夫飾)的感情一直膠著。姬與積有戀情，後來遇見謝遜，兩人一見鐘情。域陀(米高堅飾)剛出獄不久，迫於無奈與雅歷合作偷取隔離鄰居富商的鑽石鍊。其後，雅歷與妻子發生衝突、被蘇珊襲擊，蘇珊以為雅歷已死去，匆忙間連鑽石鍊也一拼帶走。一部以貪婪、野心、慾望與出賣朋友等元素為題材的電影，除了有類似驚慄性的片種外亦突出了人物性格，是一部感性的驚慄片。
Wine merchant Alex Gates (Jack Nicholson) lives an enviable lifestyle: fancy shop, attractive wife Suzanne (Judy Davis), sexy Latin mistress Gabrielle (Jennifer Lopez) , red BMW convertible. In truth, his finances are stretched to the limit, his marriage is shambles and his relationship to his stepson Jason (Stephen Dorff) toxic. The riches of his wealthy clients are all too seductive , especially a million dollar diamond necklace he and veteran safe-cracker and poker buddy Victor Spansky (Michael Caine) conspire to steal as their ticket to easy street. Alex is leaving for New York with the jewels when his wife walks in and catches him his latest lie. Their bloody confrontation leaves Alex unconscious and Suzanne fleeing with son Jason. While Alex's attention is drawn to the jewels, his stepson is drawn to Gabrielle , unaware of her liaison with his stepfather. It is out on the open sea when the final confrontation between Alex and Jason takes place, where larceny and greed, love and lust, blood and wine converge.
