Pretentious and Disappointing
| I had high hopes for this drama because of its all star cast. After buying the movie, I had to watch the movie in 2 separate sittings because it was so poorly made. The movie came across too self conscious, and therefore pretentious and preachy. The intentions were good in that it tried to show tradional home values conflicting against the changing times, but the script could not achieve its own high ideals and eventually suffocates itself. It tried to cover too much in too little space. As a result, everything was haphazard, not to mention the sudden switch from one thread onto another totally unrelated tangent throwing the whole movie off balance. A lot of problems were brought up, but suddenly everything melts way into smiling faces. This poor transition of course is once again the fault of the script/director trying to cover too much. The main thread in the movie is Danny Lee and Ai Ti. Unfortunately, though they try sincerely, they do not have the acting experience to carry their roles. Danny looked like a fish out of water. He was finally in his element again during the fighting scene. To give him credit, he does improves as the movie draws to its close, but the best acting job is still by the 2 elders, Jing Miao and Gung Chiu Hsia. Ling Yun could have delivered this role in his sleep, and Ling Po probably should have just called in her role over the telephone since the movie obviously wanted to use her name more than her talent. As there was no time for the film to realize its message cinematically, the movie had to resort to the poorest form of cinema---to unabashedly preach it out. Director Loh's talent was obviously slipping to come up with such an uneven piece. |
