「龍門七俠」之六俠夜探「昭慶寺」被殺，七俠之首文素臣（喬莊）決心報仇。主持空明和尚（唐迪）作惡多端，調戲木匠妹妹琴兒（李菁），且與奸臣勾結，在觀日亭殺害巡按林惕菴（李影）。林一家誤中機關墮海，幸獲文暗中保護，並在海中救回林之女兒紅玉（何莉莉）。林下令文進攻「召慶寺」取走謀反名單，於是文潛入「昭慶寺」藏經閣與空明作最後一戰。
張徹的劇本將電影貫注了傳統中國俠義精神，層出不窮的機關設計與爆炸場面，極盡視覺刺激。文素臣與空明的終極決戰，對後來張徹及現代武俠電影發展有重大的影響。
Directed by Hsieh Chun, from a script by Chang Cheh, his classic example of "martial chivalry" films marks one of screenwriter Chang's first forays into the genre, and occupies a significant place in the development of the modern kung-fu movie. Young heartthrob Chiao Chuang plays the title character, a swordsman who avenges the murders of six comrades in battle against the notorious monks of the Chao Ching Monastery.
