Best Solo Debut Album of 2005

After a four-year hiatus, 楊丞琳/Rainie Yang returns to the Taiwan music scene to release her debut solo album, 曖昧/My Intuition. The last time that fans of Rainie Yang's music saw her, she was only 17 years old and was part of the now-defunct girl group, 4 In Love. During these last several years, Rainie has been trying to balance acting in Mandarin series, hosting television shows, and training to dance better (to date, Rainie has been dancing for a bit over a decade). Taiwan's music market is highly competitive, with new artists popping up virtually every week and new albums being released by popular artists every year or so. So when an artist like Rainie has been gone for nearly half a decade, that artist will have to rebuild her fan base from the ground up. Fortunately, Rainie, who has been determined to release this album for about half the time that she has been gone, has a few tricks up her sleeve. For one, most fans of a television series almost naturally become fans of the theme songs from the series that they watch. So it is no coincidence that the title of Rainie's album, 曖昧/My Intuition, is also the theme song of 惡魔在身邊/Devil Beside You, which stars none other than Rainie herself, released during the summer of 2005. Before the release of this album, Rainie had photo shoots to display her cuteness, which is a tried and proven method used by popular artists such as 蔡依林/Jolin Tsai and 王心凌/Cyndi Wang to get themselves noticed. But in the end, the most important thing about an artist is their ability to sing, so let's look at some of the best tracks of this album. <04 只想愛你/Just Want to Love You> This pop ballad features easy-to-follow lyrics on top of a very memorable beat. 只想愛你 features both fast and slow parts that allow Rainie to display the strength of her vocals. Both the verses and the chorus are catchy enough to make sure that this song, which is already a gem upon the first listen, gets better the more times a person listens to it. <03 理想情人/Ideal Lover> 理想情人 is another pop ballad that is very pleasing to listen to. The slow beginning hooks the listener and brings the listener to a powerful chorus. Rainie sings about what she likes about her ideal lover and how she wonders about what type of person would be able to receive his love. A great pop song made cute by Rainie's style of singing. <02 曖昧/My Intuition> 曖昧, the most developed song on this album, truly showcases Rainie's powerful vocals. Unlike many of Rainie's other songs, which are pop-oriented, 曖昧 features an unforgettable R&B ballad that may give the listener goosebumps. This song shows Rainie's confusion as she experiences a friendship that is slowly turning into a relationship. With a catchy but almost haunting tune behind Rainie's strong vocals, the listener can almost feel the sadness and uncertainty that the singer is expressing. <06 習慣/Routine> A slow R&B ballad, 習慣 allows the listener to feel the sadness that Rainie sings about. With perhaps more instruments than any other song on this album, 習慣 makes an otherwise simple song a masterpiece. 習慣 features a strong chorus and bridge that takes this song up yet another notch. Rainie Yang's 曖昧 is arguably the best debut solo album of 2005. This statement may not be fair, however, because although 曖昧 is the debut solo album of an artist, Rainie has been in the music and entertainment industry long before many new artists of this year even stepped into a recording studio for the first time. Expect a sophomore album to be released by Rainie in about a year, because with a debut album like 曖昧, Rainie Yang isn't going away anytime soon. Overall Album Rating: 8.5/10.0 |
