在睽违一年後，Leehom 2005年度新专辑「盖世英雄」，延续「Chinked-out」东西乐风融合的精神，加入了最具中华文化代表的传统戏曲—京剧与昆曲，要让中华传统文化的音乐元素一举跃上国际舞台！ Leehom 表示此曲的灵感来自电影《霸王别姬》，当时他被片中美丽的身段及唱腔，以及凄美动人的爱情故事深深所吸引。在录音时，他更将京剧优美的唱腔与西式R&B的唱腔巧妙地融合为一，在专辑中发挥的淋漓尽致，让歌迷听的心中有古典，但耳中却有新意！

这次为了让歌迷充分了解到这次京剧与西式嘻哈结合的音乐元素，除了歌唱技巧以及曲风外，造型师特别将Leehom这次的整个造型，把原有的运动嘻哈风，用手工绘制或是钉制上京剧脸谱的人物图案或墬饰，让新造型增添了些许东方味道。

王力宏《盖世英雄》

王力宏上张《心中的日月》大玩中国乐风，希望开创属于自己的Chinked-Out，将中西乐交叉融合，交出「心中的日月」﹑「竹林深处」这些优美的作品，虽然作品曾惹上过抄袭风波，但个人认为，那仍然是张具吸引力的专辑。事隔一年，他今年又带着他的Chinked-Out第二波专辑《盖世英雄》跟各地乐迷见面。

整张专辑共收录十首歌曲，基本上全为国语作品。新碟除了有Leehom(王之洋名)一向善唱演绎的深情抒情歌曲外，亦延续上次的中国音乐风格。而继上次玩过用五音音阶去作曲，以及加入大量民族乐器和中乐元素後，Leehom今次亦大玩中国的传统戏曲，如在歌曲加入﹑改动一些京曲﹑昆曲(昆山腔)的意念﹑技巧﹑乐器和内容，把融合「中乐」的层面进一步推广。

诚然，个人对Leehom近年积极研发加入了中乐元素的歌曲深表认同，因为这不仅能为他本人开创全新的风格，而且亦能将传统中乐的精髓透过跟西乐融合带到世界各地，让更多人认识和喜欢，情形有点像女子十二乐坊般。至于今次他选择把京剧等戏曲元素加入他善长的西方流行音乐里，其实亦是一个不错的尝试，让人可认真留意和思考当中的可行性。不过，如果从整体效果或耐听度而言，笔者个人还是比较欣赏上一张《心中的日月》里的歌曲，听起来更舒服，更精致，而今次就能给乐迷看到他的创意和感受到丰富的听觉享受，并或多或少能刺激大家对京剧艺术的一点兴趣。至于其他Leehom一直善长的非Chinked-Out作品，则保持他一贯的水准，词曲水准不差。

「在梅边」藉汤显祖的《牡丹亭》发挥，由Leehom和五月天阿信填词，是首歌词优美且富节奏感的作品，喜不喜欢将中国戏曲用Rap的方式呈现全属个人喜好的问题，不过这歌终究是一个尝试，至少能让歌者玩得尽兴。「花田错」旋律优美悦耳，歌词也填得挺有意思，至于用上京曲的唱腔这点效果不算非常显着。点题歌「盖世英雄」是一首大杂烩作品，把粤语﹑国语﹑英语﹑Rap和京剧等元素混在一起，要处理的难度高，终究值得留意。

跟韩国天王阿Rain及J-LIM合作的「完美的互动」是首有趣的歌曲，三人像是互相切磋，各自都有可取之处，未分胜负。「爱因为在心中」有一份人文关怀，也有世界大同的感觉，气氛温馨感动，是碟内的一首佳作。「第一个清晨」俱值得一听。

This album (“GSYX”) converted me into a Lee Hom fan. I’ve never been much of an admirer of his music until I heard this CD, which, imho, is absolutely incredible, and just goes to show what a musical genius he is.

This is Lee Hom’s second “chinked-out” offering (the first being Shangri-La, which btw, is just as amazing). By “chinked-out”, he is referring to his blend of Chinese classical/folk music elements with American hip-hop. Sounds like an unlikely marriage, but it works!

The opening track, 在梅边 (Zai Mei Bian, “By the Plum Blossoms”), is a rap ballad of a classical Chinese opera 牡丹亭 (Mu Dan Ting, “The Pavilion of the Peony”). I say rap ballad because it basically condenses the story of 牡丹亭into a 4-minute rap. Lee Hom also borrows the 渐快 element (um… which means a gradual speed-up, for the lack of a better translation) of the Chinese opera for the last part of his rap, which first starts out slow, and then picks up phenomenal speed. Awesome.

The second track, 花田错 (Hua Tian Cuo，“A Mistake in the Field of Flowers”—I cringe at all my translations, because they sound so horrendously clumsy) is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE in the entire CD. I could put this on repeat mode for like 6 times before I stop myself, lest I get tired of it (but guess what, I haven’t!) He also employs the singing style from Chinese operas for this number, and wow, I never knew Chinese opera could be so R&B! I just love how he makes it possible for you to bop along to the erhu. This entire track is totally lush; it’s like immersing in an audio spa. Mmmm…

The third number (ok, I think I’ve unintentionally started a track-by-track commentary, but why not?), which is also the title track, features Jin and Lee Yan (the opera master who sang the part of the emperor in “Farewell to my Concubine”). When I first heard this song, I thought it was crap, given that all Lee Hom does (save for some rapping) is exclaim “盖世英雄到来” throughout the song. But this track grew on me as I had more of it. I realised the singing/rapping’s not the main focus of this number. It’s the instrumentation rather. Imho, the best part of the song is the electric guitar solo followed by the symphony of strings. It’s a feel-good number, and very lush as well. One of my favourites in the CD too.

Lee Hom slows down with “Kiss Goodbye” in Track 4. It’s a standard Lee Hom ballad that is a must-have in every Lee Hom album. It’s chart-topper material, with a very nice jazz piano solo as its interlude. I like this song, but this is NOT the point of GSYX.

In track 5, he returns with another hip-hop number. This collaboration with Korea’s Rain and Lim Jeong Hee, is really as its title suggests, a Perfect Interaction. I just love the groove of this song, and how one singer passes the baton to the other so seamlessly despite the fact that they are singing in different languages. Extremely happy and likeable song.

Track 6: 大城小爱 (Da Cheng Xiao Ai, “Big Love in a Small City”) is a simple love song about missing a girl. It’s a pleasant pop ballad, but not my favourite.

Track 7: 第一个清晨 (Di Yi Ge Qing Chen, “The First Morning”) is my second favourite song after 花田错. This is not chinked-out, but a no frills ballad with only the piano and guitars. I’ve never been a big fan of Lee Hom’s ballads, which can sometimes get a little over the top. But this one is simply sublime. It’s simple and quiet, but it speaks volumes. This is another one of those songs which I obsessively put on repeat mode. Definitely one of his best slow numbers yet.

Track 8: 哥儿们 (Ge’r Men, “Brothers”) is all about friendship among the guys. It’s brilliant how he sings with the Beijing accent of having Rs (儿) after certain words. It just makes the whole thing sound so orientally chic. The song also has an infectious beat. I just want to dance whenever I hear this.

Track 9: 让开 (Rang Kai, “Move Over”). This is one track with lots of Chinese pride, where he proudly proclaims that “This is our (the Chinese’s) era/time.” The notable thing about this song is that it uses the beat of the Chinese drums, like in a lion dance. Very experimental, very random. I couldn’t get it at first, but it has grown on me since.

Track 10: 爱，因为在心中 (Ai, Yin Wei Zai Xin Zhong, “Because Love is in our Hearts”). Technically, this is not a Lee Hom number, but one written and performed by his fans as a tribute to him. He included this in his album to honour to his fans. I think I do hear him sing a line or two in this song. Musically, this may not gel with the rest of the tracks, but thematically, it does, given that this is all about Heroes of Earth, and I suppose his fans are his heroes in one way or another.

My only complaint about GSYX is that there aren’t enough chinked-out tracks in this album. The ballads are nice, but I think chinked-out hip-hop is his niche! I guess he can’t be producing a full-fledged hip-hop album as this would render the album non-mainstream in the Chinese market. I seriously CANNOT WAIT for his next offering. He simply gets better and better.

Leehom is on a roll; his second "chinked out" album is amazing! This album isn't as diverse as his last album, Shangri-La, which experimented with the sounds [instruments and vocals] of various cultures. This album focuses on Chinese opera (only in the first three tracks), but that doesn't mean it's worse; in fact, I like this album more than his last. My favorite songs on this album are 在梅邊 (the ending of that song is insane), 花田錯 (very beautiful), 蓋世英雄 (this collaboration with Jin [formerly Jin Tha MC] is AMAZING; I can't stop listening to it!), 完美的互動 (another GREAT collaboration. Bi and J-Lim's vocals are great), and Kiss Goodbye (more raw and more simple than his previous ballads like Forever Love, but it is swoon-worthy as always). Track 9, 讓開, is a bit hard to swallow at first. My first impression was that it was very MESSY- there are a lot of seemingly random, clashing sounds. But it grew on me, and now I think this is the most creative song he's done. And track 10, 愛因為在心中, is surprisingly a song that his fans wrote and sang for him. Leehom adds a little bit of ad-libbing in the end of the song. Very sweet and cute. All in all, this album is a MUST BUY for old fans, as well as for people who are completely new to his music.

This album is the best of all the albums that he had released. Highly recommanded to everyone dat likes R&B. This album has the full taste of R&B and the feel of chinese opera especially 花田錯 and 在梅邊。 So, if you would like to hear the songs please buy the artist's album to appreciate his hard work. He deserved it.

ive heard a couple of songs and this is going to be a good album... but to my surprise i didnt see the following songs produced this year on the tracklist... 'Finally', 'Im lovin it 2005', 愛情攻略 and the duet with Rain... any reason why?
