本片由劉家良執導，亞洲影帝姜大衛主演。故事描述，清官之子韋風（姜大衛）受康熙皇賞識，混入田家找出叛變之實據。田孫女芝芝（黃杏秀）喜韋，求祖父田老太爺（劉家榮）聘其為私墊教師。及後，韋盜得造反密件，欲與芝離莊，田老遂萌殺意；惡鬥下芝為掩護韋，慘死於田老拳下；韋死裡逃生，為報仇創出螳螂拳法……
Arguably the best film director for traditional style kung-fu action, Liu Chia-liang (a.k.a. Lau Kar-leung) was a pioneer exploring authentic martial art technique and training procedures in kung-fu films. So although David Chiang is a kung-fu film veteran, it's no wonder that in The Shaolin Mantis, where he plays a man who learns martial arts from a praying mantis then seeks revenge for his wife's death, the movie feature some of his best kung-fu fights to date.
