Cartoon shorts that make you laugh and weep
|
Postgal Workshop is a Hong Kong design house and animation studio that has been gaining considerable local and global recognition. Driven by the creative duo of John Chan and Pam Hung, Postgal has made many animated commercials and comic ads for various famous corporations and organizations, but what sets the cartoon-makers apart from other similar setups in Hong Kong's creative industry is its portfolio of award-winning narrative animated shorts. And its creators sure have earned the numerous international awards bestowed upon them. These animated shorts were exhibited to a packed audience at the 2010 Hong Kong International Film Festival as an anthology movie, which was later made available on DVD. The Postgal Animation Collection DVD contains six animated titles in addition to the commercial works produced by the innovative company. Viewers may choose to watch them individually, but it is recommended to press "Play All" and see them in the intended chronological sequence. A kuso version of Doraemon (which was better known in Hong Kong as "Ding Dong"), Din Dong is perhaps the best known property of Postgal. Coming in brief episodes, the parody shorts revolve around the resourceful talking cat who has a waist bag from which he pulls incredible "gadgets" (some might say trash) to help his best friend Die Hung (but always ends up landing him in trouble). Din Dong is smart, quirky, and wickedly funny, and the way it deals with recycling is ingenious. The cherry on the cake, though, has to be hearing the original Cantonese dubbing artist of Doraemon voicing Din Dong here! The other titles that follow are not as cheery. In fact, there is a blatant sadness to most other shorts. Even though they are rooted in Hong Kong, there is a universal appeal to these shorts that keeps this animation workshop winning awards around the world. Fool Lee's title character is a beggar, and we see him perform heroics to save the girl he fancies. This is pretty straightforward stuff, and is subtly romantic in a poignant sort of way. But moving on to The Tired City, any romantic feeling you may have will quickly evaporate. It features the damsel from Fool Lee, and it shows how much she really is in distress. We are introduced to her excruciatingly exhausting life having to juggle multiple jobs, and how there's absolutely no escape from her despair. No doubt many viewers who live in busy cities would see themselves in this. Mum is Born has a very cinematic feel, and is easily this editor's favorite of the lot. When old mom gets sick, she becomes amnesiac and acts like a baby (hence the title), and her young children therefore have to take care of her like they are the parents. How do they cope with the exchange of roles? Remember to bring tissue with you before you see this touching piece, and afterwards you may probably want to give your mom a big fat bear hug. The running time of Life is Animated is so short it's over before you even know it. But that's exactly why it is so effective in bringing out its point, that life burns away in a blink of eyes. Created for RTHK (the equivalent to BBC in Hong Kong), Hidden Elders starts as a mockumentary presented like the broadcaster's serious current-affairs programs. Amidst marginalized minority cultures and old buildings being torn down, a filming crew follows a lonely elderly man whose existence has been forgotten and neglected by the society. But out of this social satire the Postgal magicians pull a surprising plot twist to end the short on a fairy tale note that leaves the whole thing in a more upbeat mood. |
