January 20, 2006 BEST J-ROCK EVER...This CD is amazing. Not only can the lead singer sing...but the all-girl band can PLAY. They rock their souls out on this release. Granted, about 1/2 the songs are Japanese covers of United States rock songs...but they are honestly BETTER than the originals! I am in awe. And 14 full tracks...no interludes or fillers...all songs. Awesome. Buy this. Cutting edge and talented. All I can say is WOW. And my thanks to whoever it was who pointed me in their direction (someone said if you liked Yunna, you'd like this band...and they are RIGHT). Man, this disk will NOT leave my player for awhile. But, someone tell me: who sings the original version of track #6? It's making me crazy, because the song is too-die-for and hot here in the States, but I can't think who did the English version. January 4, 2006 It's OK...This CD was a gamble, and I think I lost. It's OK, but I doubt I'll play it much. I really love the vocals, but musically...it's all over the place. Sentimental ballads, power ballads, rap/hip-hop, R&B, traditional...you name it...it's on here. And I don't enjoy CDs like that. I prefer a nice, cohesive release that makes sense. This one doesn't. It has no flow at all. Just a jumble of songs. Some even sound like there is an echo...not such great recording. Still, her voice is dynamite. Very talented. January 4, 2006 Not much else to say...This CD already has so many reviews, I doubt I can add much. Anyway...I bought this CD because "4 in Love" is out of print and I can't find it anywhere, but wanted a Cookies CD based on Stephy Tang's solo CD which I LOVED. This CD is basically quite excellent. Out of the massive amount of songs, there were only 3 I totally didn't like: 1, 7 and 16. But there were far more I LOVED. Overall, this is a nice purchase for my collection, which is basically why I bought it. I might play it every so often...but mostly I wanted something collectable of Cookies before all their stuff was unavailable. They sound good. January 4, 2006 Actually, it's pretty nice...I had never heard of this singer, and decided to take a chance because of the DVD that I can actually watch here in the US because it's Region-Free. I really, really love her voice. And I basically like the CD. However, I absolutely hated track 1 (and it's reprise on track 7), as well as track 9. They are all too hip-hop/R&B for my personal tastes. The rest of the tracks (especially the ballads) are amazing. I even like the 2 up-tempo songs that are basic pop and NOT hip-hop/R&B style. I wish she'd stick to the pop and ballads. But, still this CD was not bad for something I was taking a chance on. Without those 2 tracks I'd be giving this a 10-of-10 rating instead of only an 8. I think those 2 songs really destroy the flow and feel of the rest of the CD. I haven't seen the DVD yet, but I love the songs that are on it, so I imagine the DVD will be excellent. The photos show a lovely lady and I hope we'll see more of Ella in the future (with a more cohesive release next time). She's got the ability to be very popular! Did you find this review helpful? January 4, 2006 FINALLY!This was going to be my last Twins purchase. I have 3 of their other CDs, and frankly...I never play them because I just don't think they are good (please, before all the major Twins fans start screaming at me...keep reading...). But, this release is like a fresh Twins! It's amazingly well-done. The music and the vocals are more mature and pleasant. I adore how the lyrics tell you which "Twin" is singing and the photos (while impractical to actually store and view) are glorious. This is a VERY stylish and elegant release with cohesive songs and a nice feel to the whole thing. My favorite track of all is #2, and believe it or not...I only hate ONE TRACK: #3. That's a record for me with Twins music...usually I only like 1 or 2 songs, but on this release I only dislike 1 song. The rest are top-notch. This release has a lot of ballads (more than usual, I think) which I really enjoy. And the up-tempo songs are refined pop and not a mess of dance/hip-hop/teeny-bopper stuff. I can't speak for the lyrics since I don't speak the language, but I enjoy the voices and music. I'm trying to decide which "Twin" I think has the better voice, but I think it varies with the song. As for the puzzle...well, I think I will either give it to my step-daughters or something else. I'm a bit too old for puzzles and my son is far too young. If you have always liked Twins...this CD might surprise you as something a bit different than what you expected. If you have given up on Twins...this CD will bring you back around. It's refined and VERY well-produced. I actually (for the first time) find myself recommending a Twins CD! Buy it. Seriously. These girls have totally pulled it together! January 4, 2006 Ummm...I bought this mini-CD because I had heard previews from Core of Soul's upcoming 2006 release. I didn't want to wait until 01/25/06 to have music by this great band. BUT...honestly, I should have waited. This was a huge dissapointment after hearing such great singles as Ageha and Yumenori RIDERS. I was expecting the same rock sound...but it's all ballads. Track 1 isn't even a song (just talking), Track 4 is all music, and Track 7 is live. The only song I remotely liked on this was Saint Darkness. My advice? Skip this older CD and wait for the new 2006 release...I have heard half of it and it blows this one away! Also, this CD fell apart in my hands, so I don't know if it's the company manufacturing a lousy CD or the results of poor shipping. But, it doesn't matter, because I won't play it much anyway. Oh well. Just goes to show because you love a band so much NOW, that it doesn't necessarily mean you should go back and buy their old stuff. Bands change: this one sure did. For the better, but still. I cannot believe the huge difference. I truly should have followed my instinct to wait for the one I KNEW I'd love instead of racing to buy this old mini-CD. December 31, 2005 DEFINITELY AN AUDIO ARTIST...Let me say that I think Fiona Sit is wonderful. She's vibrant and talented. However, I do have more to say about this CD + DVD set. I will begin with the CD. It's top-notch Fiona! Great songs and fabulous vocals. I know there are only 7 tracks, but all are perfect, so that's OK. I can tell her voice and range are both maturing and it's nice to watch her grow as a singer and as a person. Now, on to the DVD. I confess, I had to turn it off after 21 minutes into the concert...it was just too painful to watch anymore. (By the way, I know this website says the DVD is PAL format, but it played fine on my Region 1- American NTSC DVD player in full color...so don't be turned off thinking you can't watch the concert in the States...) Poor Fiona. She dances worse than I do (and I'm pretty pitiful) and was so stiff, she looked like a doll trying to bend. Of course, she's primarily a ballad singer, and on those songs she basically just stood there and/or walked around smiling. Oh...her hair! I don't know what electrical outlet she stuck her finger in, but she looked like a poodle. Big huge curly/frizzy hair and a little petite body. NOT her most attractive appearance. And on some songs her lips didn't match up with the lyrics (I wonder if the producer dubbed the sound over the footage, because her mouth was not saying what I was hearing...quite distracting). She also missed her "cue" on several songs and didn't seem to know when to come in. Especially on her duet(s) with the male singer (I don't know who he is, but he is really good...he was playing keyboard too.). She kept putting the microphone up to her mouth and taking it down again until she finally got it right and sang at the correct part of the song. Well, like I said, I didn't watch the whole thing...but I saw enough. I think no less of Fiona as an artist: heck, it's hard to sing live and her SINGING was fine (except for her rendition of "As Time Goes By...that was bad). But her stage presence leaves MUCH to be desired in the way of entertainment. I would think music videos would suit her better than live footage. At least with videos she could have edited and practiced more. I know I will cherish the CD, but I think the DVD will gather some dust. It's just horrible. One watch as a fan for novelty value is about all it's worth. For me, I will stick to Fiona in AUDIO. Visually, it's just not there. Still, she's young yet and things may change. But for right now: don't expect this DVD to blow you away. Better to focus on the outstanding new CD. Each song is a gem and track #5 had me hitting "replay" over and over. Very nice CD. DVD? Ummm...not so much. However, my best to Fiona. She's trying and she's doing better than some people...not everyone is a born dancer or born performer. December 30, 2005 I could listen for the whole night...This release by Rene is just great! It has it's ups and downs like any CD...but that's OK. At least her voice is consistant and wonderful. The first 4 tracks go by largely unnoticed because they are all pretty standard (and relaxing ballads). Then track #5 grabs your attention as the first song that is up-tempo. Very nice. Track #6 is a weak track for me and I don't enjoy the duet or the sing-song type music. It sounds like a bad Vegas floor show. Track #7 is OK, not a very memorable song. Track #8 another "miss" for my taste. It doesn't really fit the feel of the CD because the piano is so heavy and Rene sings most of the song a bit below her natural register. It also has a casino feel to it that I don't enjoy. Track #9 is a nice ballad. Track #10 is one I thought I would HATE because it says in the lyric book that there is rap in it. But it isn't really rap. It's a guy very softly talking behind Rene's lovely vocals. I really like the song for her. Track #11 is OK. Track #12 finishes the CD on a gorgeous piano ballad in the usual Rene style and it's a beautiful way to end. OH...it might be noted that tracks #1 and #13 are not songs...just "mood" noises like traffic going by. I guess it's to set the tone of the CD. I haven't watched the DVD yet, and to be honest, I'm a little confused. There is only one disk in this case. I played the CD...I guess the DVD is on the reverse side? I'm not used to having both on one disk. The case SAYS there is a DVD, so I am assuming I have to turn the CD over and then play the DVD. I do wish there were music videos on it though. Three is not enough! And I can't do the karaoke because I don't speak the language, so those are useless to me. I would have rathered her put 6 music videos than only 3 music videos and the same 3 in karaoka format. Still, this is a delightful release and I like it a lot. As for someone else having already recorded track #4...I don't see that as an issue at all. Nowhere in the lyric book does Rene try to take credit for either writing or arranging the song. December 30, 2005 Beautiful...Although I detested the packaging on this release, I did like that it came with several lovely photo cards so I was able to make my own slim jewel case with another photo than the one shown here. As for the music...she picked some great songs to include. Most all are ballads (which I love) and give a very soothing sound. The recordings are clear and her voices is pristine and wonderful. The only track I didn't like was #8 because of all the background noises like birds and such. My favorite two tracks are definitely #5 and #7. Wow. The guitar on these songs is amazing! It breaks up all the piano-based ballads with two stunning guitar-based ones. Excellent. I hope releases some totally new material soon. I am enjoying this CD a lot and I only received it today! December 30, 2005 Well...I will begin by stating the Vangie does have a wonderful singing voice and seems to deliver her lyrics with feeling. However, I have to say that this is NOT pop music. It is most definitely dance/hip-hop with some ballads mixed in. For example: how do you get more dance than track #1? I did like both tracks #2 and #3 because they are lovely ballads. Track #4 is just horrible...some guy half-rapping, half just babbling in the backgroup is awful. And the music on this track is most assuredly hip-hop. What makes it even worse, is it's included on the DVD, so I'll have to skip it on that too! Track #5 is up-tempo and it grew on me. It's a bit more dance-style than I like, but more pop than track #1 by far. Her voice is nice and strong on this track too. Track #6 is OK. Track #7 is another dance/hip-hop tune which I don't like at all. I don't even like the words that are in English. Track #8 is basic up-tempo pop and track #9 closes the disk on a ballad. I really wish that ALL her songs were ballads, actually. Oh well. I took a gamble and feel I lost on this one. I enjoy her voice, but there are too many songs I just HAVE to skip to make this pleasurable for me. I haven't even watched the DVD yet because the CD was dissapointment enough. I think this is a talented lady who should avoid the trendy dance/hip-hop stuff. It's not her best work and just isn't pleasant like her pop and ballads are. December 22, 2005 Talented...OK, I admit it. I hesitated to order a CD with a title like "Pig's Song" because I thought it would be juvenile and silly. I WAS WRONG! I love this purchase and only wish I could watch the MVs (I have GOT to eventually invest in a Region 2 DVD player...). I think her voice and music reminds me of a cross between the sweetness and clarity of Stephy Tang with the power and intensity of Stephanie Sun Yan-Zi. My favorite song is track #2, while my least favorite is track #7 (the music is too traditional for me, and a little boring). And while I am discussing the MUSIC: I honestly think this girl needs better accompanying music. The music on here (for several tracks) seemed a bit weak compared to the strength of her vocals. I would like to see more powerful music to match her singing talent and ability. I don't think CD musically took full advantage of the artist. She is simply amazing vocally, and with some more stunning music behind her, she could EASILY be the latest and greatest new young pop singer. Very admirable and a CD I will enjoy for quite some time. Check her out and DON'T let the title hold you off...if you do, you are missing some awesome singing! December 18, 2005 Back-Ordered??I tried to contact customer service about this CD + DVD to see if only the DVD is a live concert and was told that this item is already on BACK-ORDER? Has anyone else been told that, or seen their account summary change status of this item from "pre-order" to "back-order"? I am very confused as to how something can be back-ordered, when it hasn't even released yet. Has this only happened to me, or others as well? And does anyone know WHY it is back-ordered and for how long? December 17, 2005 The TRUE "pearl" is KOKIA herself...This singer is beyond extra-ordinary. I adore everything she releases. HOWEVER, like the previous reviewer...I wonder what songs are going to be included on this release. Normally, I would have already pre-ordered this simply because it is KOKIA and I have waited so long for an album by her since the glorious "Uta ga Chikara". But I didn't pre-order it yet (although it is most certainly in my cart) because I already own all her CDs and don't see the need for a collection (which I could burn myself if I really wanted to, from what I already own). My main concern is this: are ALL the tracks going to be pre-released songs? And if so...what is going to be done with the three singles she released in 2005 ("Dandelion", "Time to Say Goodbye", and "...with reflection")? The title of this release simply says "The Best Collection". NOT "New + Best Collection". I would buy this IF and only IF it contains at least some (like the 3 singles) new material. Does anyone have any information on this matter? And to the reviewer below, you made me SAD! I cannot play a DVD of Kokia because I am in the wrong DVD region (Region 1...and I'm sure her DVD will only be Region 2). I would DEFINITELY buy a Kokia DVD if I was able to view it. But thank you for the information. Maybe someone else has the information regarding WHERE her 3 singles from this year will be? Thank you, and support Kokia. December 17, 2005 Concert??Before I order this...can someone tell me if the CD "Me" is a Live Concert recording or studio? Is only the DVD the Live Concert? I need to know because I adore Fiona and everything she does is magic (I expect no less of this...), but I don't tend to listen to Live Concert audio CDs...only studio recorded ones. December 17, 2005 NOT A REVIEW- A QUESTION:I loved the audio CD version so much, I am considering the video DVD version as well. But can someone tell me...what is a Karaoke DVD like? Is it just the words across the viewing screen, or is there video (like music videos) footage to accompany the lyrics? I am wanting specifically to buy this if there are music videos to go with the Karaoke function of lyrics on the screen...but if this is nothing but words and music on a blank screen, it wouldn't be for me. December 14, 2005 Thank YOU For Your CD...This singer is still brilliant. I love all the guitar-based songs and her sweet, pure vocals. However, I admit to a *bit* of dissapointment when I played this. After falling so in love with her previous mini-album (8 tracks) and playing it over and over...I expected this full-length album to be even better (11 tracks). I don't know, maybe releasing two CDs in one year was too much for the talented Sayuri. But several songs on this release (7, 8 and 9) are not even close to her style or ability. In fact, they sound like bad show-tunes you'd hear on an inexpensive cruise ship by a low-rated singer. VERY sub-standard for both the artist and the Giza label. The material just is not good. Personally, I think she should have left this release with 8 tracks like her previous one and just not added those three songs. Because this CD begins wonderfully. The first 6 tracks are breath-taking (track 1 is one of my favorites) with a lot of guitar and shining vocals. You feel happy just listening to the songs. Then comes 7-9 and you start to wonder what on earth happened to this release both musically and vocally (these songs have too many orchastra-style string arrangements that just don't *go* with the rest of the simple guitar-driven songs). At least tracks 10 and 11 are nice. Overall, this CD is contains more relative slow songs than her previous one and it isn't as cohesive, either. I actually find that I would recommend a new listener beginning with her mini-album rather than this one. True devoted fans like me...well, of course we want this one even though it's not as solid as her earlier release. I think her vocals are better than ever, and the photos with this CD are stunning...she's a beautiful young lady who appears to play her own guitar (based on the photos...I cannot read Japanese credits). But, the drawback is the music. It's just not as perfect as her first. She still reminds me a lot of her contemporary singers Ai Takaoka and Yumiko Yamagida as well as American singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton. But not as much Vanessa on this one...although I find her higher voice than the three just mentioned is more in the style of Kokia. VERY excellent people to be compared to, if you are comparing! Still, I MUST be honest (despite my adoration of Sayuri) and only rate this 8-of-10 (her last was 10-of-10), because of those three strange and out-of-place tracks that just aren't good or deserving of her attention. It makes the whole release not as pleasant an experience when three tracks right in the middle are odd and a totally different sound. I hope next time (and I will always buy her music) she sticks to the basic guitar and picks up the tempo a bit...which suits her best. Not a bad CD though, and one that I think continues to prove this artist gets far less attention that she deserves. December 9, 2005 SO GREAT, I BOUGHT IT TWICE...I already owned the first version of this CD, but when I saw this version came with 5 MVs...I bought it again just for them. And am I glad I did! It might sound silly to buy a CD twice merely to obtain MVs, but in FanFan's case...it was a wonderful investment. The music is wonderful (as I reviewed it already on the first edition, I will focus on the MVs here), but the videos are stunning. FanFan has really matured both in appearance and style. Her videos are elegant and masterfully produced. And unlike some MVs I have (like Stephy Tang's)...FanFan's coloration is perfect and her mouth is moving in correct time with the words. I love the 2 videos where she has bangs...it's a nice, grown-up look to her face. The first video is a bit more like her older ones (a bit juvenile, but fun)...my 5 year old son LOVES it because of her dancing and all the action and different costumes. The second video is truly elegant with FanFan on a beach in a white limo. The third is a masterpiece of simplicity with FanFan in a white flowing gown sitting on a wall with a guy playing a lone guitar...beautiful. The fourth video is "If", and I don't see the implications that apparently some people do with her duet with Angela. They are singing together and doing a perfect job of it. This video features gorgeous over-lays of twining vines and lace over the actual footage and shows FanFan at her most lovely. Both girls look great and sound better. The scenes are quite touching and moving. I also think this is the best song on both the CD and DVD (although it's hard to choose, because all are stand-outs). The fifth video is a little boring...it shows FanFan as a physchologist dealing with patients when she obviously is having problems of her own. I like the song, but the video is not my favorite. I think the best are 2-4. Anyway, just to own the DVD is worth the price of this item. Unlike most MVs that are played once, this one is a repeat in my DVD player! I also like that there is no commentary (like on Jasmine Leong's) distracting from the videos. It's just straight music from start to finish. A true and rare delight. December 8, 2005 A Japanese "Enya"...That is how I would describe Arai Akino. She reminds me very much of Enya's music and soft lilting vocals. However, be aware before you buy, this is a compilation CD. It says "20th Anniversary Album" on the cover. I wish YesAsia had included that somewhere (it IS included in the title on the CD lyric booklet), because honestly, I probably wouldn't have purchased this. While I find the artist to be wonderful and dynamic...some of the tracks sound extremely old. I think that in the course of the 16 songs too many years are covered and it makes for an unusual mix of sounds. The quality of the older songs (production, not singing ability) is not so good and that makes the newer ones really stand out. There isn't a great "flow" on this compilation. It IS however, a nice introduction to this artist and her unusual style and talent, because so much of her works are covered. Still, I think I would prefer a brand-new release by her. And I WILL buy one when it is available. This is an 8-out-10 for me because of the quality of the older songs and the random selection of songs from MANY different years. I still think the singer is amazing, but wish the collection was better made. I hope Arai Akino produces a solid NEW album soon...I feel I would really enjoy that. This one...not so much.
