YesAsia Editorial Description

Canadian Chinese director Quentin Lee directed his debut feature film Shopping for Fangs in 1997, followed later by two independent gay films Drift and Ethan Mao. His works display a multicultural sensitivity, especially when depicting controversial subjects like patriarchal politics, immigrants, and gay rights within the Chinese community. In 2007, ten years after Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule, Quentin Lee wrote a love letter to the city where he had lived until he was 16, in his first documentary film 0506hk. He interviewed artists and filmmakers like Kam Kwok Leung, Raman Hui, Peter Chan, and Teddy Chen on why they chose to be in the tiny city, and together they dissected the city's cultural identity. A favorite for many critics, 0506hk was selected to screen in several film festivals, including the 2007 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, Vancouver Asian Film Festival, and The Vancouver International Film Centre & Vancity Theatre. This DVD release also includes the bonus documentary short A Chinese Class.

Director: Lee Quentin

0506HK documents filmmaker Quentin Lee's returns to Hong Kong, where he was born and raised. As he explores his desire to move back there from Los Angeles, he interviews local artists, filmmakers, friends, and family about why they are in Hong Kong and why they choose to be there. With humor and wit, Lee explores culture, belonging, politics, and ultimately the question of where the best place is for him to exist as a filmmaker. Part autobiography, part travelogue, part cultural criticism, the documentary features local cultural icon Kam Kwok Leung, filmmakers Peter Chan, Teddy Chen, Tammy Cheung, animator Raman Hui and many other colorful characters. A stylish collage of interviews, original footage and home movies, 0506HK is sometimes nostalgic. It is nevertheless both an emotional and meaningful journey.
