YesAsia Editorial Description
Writer Sakutaro (Kusanagi Tsuyoshi) and his wife Setsuko (Takeuchi Yuko) have been inseparable since high school. When Setsuko starts getting stomach pains, she sees a doctor and is diagnosed with colon cancer. The doctor tells Sakutaro that laughter can help the immune system, prompting him to begin writing one short story a day for Setsuko. Initially only given a year left to live, Setsuko begins to find a will to live because of the stories. Even as the one-year period extends into years, Sakutaro continues writing stories on a daily basis, as long as Setsuko is around to read them.
Collector's Edition comes with a bonus disc with special features.

"Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom," wrote the Psalmist (Ps. 90:12), and that simple theme lies at the heart of "1,778 Stories of Me & My Wife." Former high school sweethearts Sakutaro (Kusanagi Tsuyoshi) and Setsuko (Takeuchi Yuko) truly are a happily married couple, perfectly content with their simple lives together, he working as an obscure science fiction writer and she as an office worker. When Setsuko experiences stomach pains, her neighbor suggests that Setsuko may be pregnant, but a visit to her doctor's office reveals a much more fateful cause. Setsuko has terminal colon cancer. The doctor tells Sakutaro that his wife likely only has a year to live and, even with treatments, will have no more than five years. With this heartbreaking news, Sakutaro undertakes to write his wife one humorous short story each day, with the hope that laughter may strengthen Setsuko's immune system and lengthen her life. As she lives past one year, Sakutaro begins to hope that he may be able to prolong Setsuko's life indefinitely through the charm of his stories and he pours his heart into them. As he writes, we become immersed in the delightfully quirky fantasy tales he writes. Of course, the very title of this movie gives away the fact that Sakutaro's hope will not be realized. Setsuko's advancing illness inevitably leads to pain medication that leaves her asleep almost all of the time. This presents a challenge to the film, one that it fails to overcome; the movie still has a full forty minutes left to run, but it is deprived of Takeuchi Yuko's irresistible charm. We are left with Kusanagi Tsuyoshi depiction of Sakutaro's growing anguish at the imminence of his dear wife's death. Kusanagi vividly brings this anguish to life, but forty minutes of tears may be a bit overlong. Fortunately, "1,778 Stories of Me & My Wife" mostly steers clear of mawkishness through its focus on treasuring the time we have rather than mourning what we can't keep. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi brings a nuanced approach to navigating Sakutaro's grief process and Takeuchi Yuko creates a brave character of appealing warmth. Keep a handkerchief or two handy when watching this film; evened the most hardened of souls will be crying 1,778 or so tears. |
