YesAsia Editorial Description

After the tears are shed, a new day begins...

Adapted from the same-titled novel, 1 Liter no Namida (a.k.a. 1 Liter of Tears) is based on the true story about a girl's long fight with an incurable disease. A collection of her diary entries, chronicling her experiences and passion and perseverance for life, were published in 1986, and the book immediately became a bestseller. Her inspiring story was adapted into both a TV series and a feature film, with Sawajiri Erika's turn as the tragic heroine in the hit TV drama launching the young actress into instant stardom. 1 Liter no Namida also co-stars Nishikido Ryo of NEWS.

One day on her way to school, middle school student Aya (Sawajiri Erika) suddenly falls to the ground. The doctor diagnoses her with spinocerebellar degeneration, a rare and incurable neurological disease. Entering high school, Aya's condition continues to worsen as physical movements become more difficult. Forced to attend a special boarding school, she nonetheless finds hope and happiness through the support of her new friends and family. Working hard, she completes her high school education and bravely begins a new stage in her life, despite her weak health and continuous trips to the hospital. Aya never gives up, living each day of her life to the fullest until the very end.

excellent overall Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
since the drama only had, i believe, 10 episodes, it doesn't ever get draggy. the main actors are exceptional, especially Sawajiri Erika (Ikeuchi Aya, the main girl), Yakushimaru Hiroko (Ikeuchi Shioka, her mother), and Jinnai Takanori (Ikeuchi Mizuo, her father). it also helps to have a handsome Nishikido Ryo (Asou Haruto). Erika is a natural actress, whose smiles shine through the tears. Takanori, especially, broke my heart so many times. even though the drama is very heavy, and you will probably cry numerous times, the overlying message is very powerful: “Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing." this drama makes you want to get out of your seat and do something with your life. unlike the main character, who is based on a true person and book of the same name, we have choices in our lives...and futures which can't be wasted. This is probably the best japanese drama I've seen...and one of the best overall dramas I've ever seen. The writing, plot, and acting are top notch. Live, and do it happily!

Great Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Exceptional drama, but I wouldn't buy it because of the price. :p Anyway, I think everyone did a very nice job and I cried every episode. Erika played her role extremely well, and her and Asou Haruto's love story is quite touching. =)

So Sad~ Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the most depressing dramas I've watched... I usually don't give high ratings to sad Japanese dramas but I found this drama heart breaking, not because of love or friendship, but because of the girl's thoughts on herself... I felt touched and saddened because it's based on a true story... Erika Sawajiri portrays Aya as a innocent and kind girl who loses her dreams and hopes because of her unfair and uncalled for fate... This drama shows others how everyone's life differs from each other and how everyone should treasure their lives as much as they can before it's too late for anything... I cried so much watching this and I hope they'll have a English subtitled version because I really hope to get this...

EXCEPTIONAL! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've always been a big fan of K-dramas, and was reluctant to watch this series not only because it was not a K-drama, but because it contained another story line revolving around some sorta detrimental health issue. However by the end of the first episode I knew it would be different.
This series is amazing, uplifting, inspirational... it makes you appreciate all the little things in life. It can be quite emotionally draining at times, but it is ultimately fulfilling. The fact that this series is based on the diary entries of the real Aya, the Aya who discovered she had an incurable disease at 15 years old and battled for life til she was 25. This is her story: how she struggled to live, and to live happily at that. There's no stupid love triangles, stories of lies and betrayal; it's simply the story of a young girl trying to live her life like every other teenager. Despite her having to sacrifice so many things because of her illness, she manages to keep a genuine smile on her face. Erika Sawajiri is absolutely amazing in this, she portrays Aya wonderfully, that innocent, sweet girl full of life and love, wondering why she was struck down by something so horrendous yet still able to carry on with hope in her heart. I didn't cry as much as I thought I would, but when I did it was totally heartfelt. This is my favourite series ever. It's affected me like no other... HIGHLY recommended!
