Since the death of his wife seven years ago, Aoyama has thrown himself into his work and become a success. Despite his success, however, he still feels empty. When his son suggests that he get remarried, he asks his friend Yoshikawa to help him hold a fake audition during which Aoyama can view thirty women and choose the one he thinks will be best for his future wife. He decides on the beautiful Yamazaki Asami, who appears to be reserved, obedient, and submissive - the Japanese "ideal woman." However, as Aoyama's his obsession deepens and he learns more about Asami, it becomes apparent that she is not the innocent flower he thought she was.

With a screenplay written by internationally acclaimed author Murakami Ryu, and sterling performances by Ishida Ryo, Matsuda Miyuki, Shiina Eihi, and Ishibashi Renji, "Audition" explores the strong gender stereotypes that continue to exist in Japan, as well as its prevalent postmodern loneliness. Yes, the imagery is shocking, as can be expected from Miike, but at its core, "Audition" provides a lot of food for thought.
