Professional Review of "My Story"

July 31, 2003

This professional review refers to On - My Story (CD + Poster) (Limited Edition)

Up to Standard: "On - My Story" ~ Andy Hui

Right after re-signing with Go East (HK) and changing to use a new agent, the Canton sad ballad king Andy Hui could not wait to storm back immediately with this 12-musical-treasure brand new Cantonese album "On - My Story." The king has lain low and not released any album for a year and a half, he is back to reclaim the land he lost in last year's musical award battlefield.

Even though the superstar plans a return, the several principal tunes that he is armed with are not distinguished or outstanding enough. They, as well as Andy's six-star performances, are undoubtedly good but in the mean time, of nothing unexpected and surprising.

The several leading tracks are what Andy most excels in, which are sad ballads AGAIN. Not as one might suppose, the rest of the songs are indeed way more astonishing and amazing.

The principal song "Macho Man" (Track#1) tells afresh how grievous, pathetic and discouraged the little men are when they fall in love with "Macho Women." The line "I hate myself because I am too macho to believe our relationship could work" reveals most modern men's helplessness and sombreness while living with their own "Macho Women". Nonetheless, it is most likely that people will get tired and bored of the song before very long.

"The Step in Life" (Track#2), especially the main musical frame, is heavenly and lovingly pleasant to listen to. As for the lyrics of "Macho Men," they arouse much sympathy just like those of "The Step in Life." As to the solo version of "On's Songs" (Track#4) by the star singer, the idea of making up the lyrics with Andy Hui's previous song titles works very well. The only unforeseen things is that the solo version is not as enchanting and enjoyable as the dual version by Double.R.

"Get It?" (Track#5), written and composed by the excellent rocker Paul HUANG GuanZhong, is one of the more engrossing and fascinating songs on the album. The refreshing tune is completely filled with Paul's unique rock style. One might never have imagined that Andy's singing could have captured the essence of Paul's rock style!

"World of Ai Iijima" (Track#10) is another intriguing and interesting song, yet with a daring and thought-provoking subject which deserves one's attention. On the one hand, it gives people a full description to the mindset of the so-called Japanese AV porn film supporters. On the other hand, it leaves chances for them to review and self-examine what they have been doing (The present reviewer hopes he got it right though). The popular singer also brings us other tempting songs which include "Lady Butterfly & Gentleman Flower" (Track#7) and "Enjoy Life Though Hard Up" (Track#8).

However, both the music and the lyrics of the other principal track "Poor Dad" (Track#6) could only score an "Average" at most. The hidden track "I Ain't Good Enough Yet" is really not good enough and should have been hidden out of sight, for it just doesn't fit the superstar's style.

Recommendations: "The Step in Life" (Track#2), "Get It?" (Track#5), "World of Ai Iijima" (Track#10)

Excellent Album Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I love this great album, it's one of Andy's best. I love all the songs in this album, and especially "One Step One Life". This song has great meanings, and I just love the lyrics. Andy's songs had improved significantly over the years. And it's getting better ever time. I recommend this album for all Cantonese listeners.

Andy, another level Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Firstly I'd like to say that I don't know why the hell this album is doing so poorly in the charts, it's one of the best albums he's made and best on the market! Andy at this stage is on par with the greatest artists in HK of all time, he has it all, a unique style, live singing, dancing (seldom these days) and a uniquely recognisable voice. This album moves away from the melancholic style he's famous for and moves over to a upbeat, cheerful mood. These types of songs have been missing in recent years from his albums such as track 3. As for track 5 it's a treat for listeners of rock music as Andy's voice can really bring it in his way composed by another talent, Paul Wong. I think Track 4 is nicely done, it's his song, his rhythm. Fluctuates his voice up and down to match the title of the songs appearing in the track.
In this album he brings even the ordinary songs to life with his method of singing. He is truly an underrated yet amazing artist which is becoming less and less these days in an industry consumed by pretty faces and massive marketing. If you're after quality canto-pop this is the one to get.

Recommended tracks: all of them.
