YesAsia Editorial Description

Being invited to Cannes and the Venice Film Festival, The 2002 Korean docudrama "Too Young to Die" shocks all with a real story about an ageing couple Park Chi-gyu and Lee Sun-ye. Their youthfulness, the powerful feelings they cherish for each other and not lastly their unusually active sex life are all explored in this controversial movie without reservation.

Director Park Jin-pyo first met the 73-year-old Park Chi-gyu and his 72-year-old partner Lee Sun-ye while making a TV documentary last year. Struck by their youthfulness, the strength of their feelings for each other and, not least, by their remarkably active sex life, he proposed filming this docu-drama, in which they re-enact their first meeting, their current lives together and the high and low points of their relationship. The film (shot as simply as possible on DV) deliberately avoids going into their personal histories and backgrounds (both have outlived their spouses and both have grandchildren), the better to focus on their intense commitment to each other and their fears of being apart. Only one episode in the film is pure documentary: the sequence at a folk-song competition, which they win with a performance of "The Song of Youth". But all of it feels entirely truthful, including the charmingly uninhibited scenes on the futon.

Product Information

Director:Park Jin Pyo This is the film that generates huge controversy (and was once banned)in Korea but is well received at overseas film festivals including Cannes and Toronto. TOO YOUNG is about a man and woman in their early seventies who meet, fall in love and then rediscover sex. They tease and learn from each other, argue over trivial matters and make love over and over again...just like a couple in their twenties. Based on a true story, this film challenges your stereotypes of what it is like to be old.
