Professional Review of "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening"

January 29, 2004

Motif-less: "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening" ~ Miriam Yeung Chin-wah

Starting 2004 with forthcoming concerts at the Hong Kong Colliseum and her brand new Cantonese album "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening", Miriam Yeung is set to return from making movies, which took up most of her time last year, to singing. "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening", with 6 new Cantonese songs and two Mandarin versions of those, is the charmingly beamish talent's debut Cantonese album for EMI, her new record company.

Unfortunately, "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening" is not as appealing as Miriam's previous Cantonese albums. It leaves the present reviewer an impression that the album has no particular motif and that EMI releases it mostly for commercial reasons. However, being commercial is utterly incontrovertible as the majority of the tunes in "Miriam 2004 Grand Opening" are either movie or advertisement theme songs. And, undeniably, there are songs in the album which could still draw the attention from some of her devoted and faithful fans.

Doubtless "Liberty Walk" (Track#5), Miriam's first leading track for EMI, is one of those songs which could capture her fans as it is a real great smash in all local karaoke boxes. Thankful to the song composer and editor Mark Lei SongDe and the writer Wang WeiWen, "Liberty Walk" is not only tuneful and melodious, but also with impassion lyrics and fashionable title. The second principal tune "Little Stars" (Track#6) is a typical "Miriam-esque" song with equally good quality in lyrics and music. "Little Stars" is definitely no second to "Liberty Walk".

"Star Fragments" (Track#7), the theme song of the movie "Sound of Colors", is written and produced by Wu YueCheng. It has also been another duo by Miriam and Liang ChaoWei since the theme song of the movie "My Lucky Star".

"Hua Hao Yue Yuan Ye" (Track#8, 10) is a duet by Miriam and Richie Yam. Miriam and Richie performed OK but there is way too much room for them to improve. As for its heavily Chinese-style music and lyrics, they are not even impressive. Besides, the upbeat dance song "Grand Opening" (Track#4) is not and has never been suitable for Miriam to sing as it only betrays her inadequacies in mastering that particular genre of songs.

As for "Luan Feng He Ming" (Track#9) and its Mandarin counterpart "Wan Shi Liu Fang" (Track#11), they are sadly ordinary too though it does no harm to spare your time listening to.

Recommendations: "Liberty Walk" (Track#5), "Little Stars" (Track#6), "Star Fragments" (Track#7)

GREAT ALBUM!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm a hardcore Miriam fan, but nonetheless, this album is excellent! Great! I loved every song on the album, even the two Mandarin versions. I'm not kidding, every song is great. There are only eight songs, including that two of them are Mandarin versions of the same two songs on the album. That didn't matter to me, since my version came with bonus tracks, 14 to be exact, hehe.

If you like great music, of all kinds, you will love Miriam's albums, incliding this one. Enjoy!

P.S, Miriam has a new album coming out on June 25th, pre-order!

good album Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
even though i am not a huge miriam fan i still have to say this album is good. Her songs are not bad, the songs for Elixir of Love were great, was written by Richie and when they both sung it, it was really good, it really suited the movie. As for the fast songs, everyone says its not good, i think its not bad, u gotta do some up beat stuff for a change. WELL DONE MIRIAM...

I like this cd very much but I wish it had more so Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This isn't Miriam's best album ever, but I still like it very much!! However, I wish that it could have been a longer album with more songs. It would feel more complete that way.

I like this cd very much Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I think some of the reviews for this cd are too harsh. I think that it is actually quite nice. I really enjoy the duet that Miriam and Richie sang for their movie Elixir of Love (both mando and canto versions) in this album. It's a traditional song and Miriam's and Richie's voices blend together very well! They're a really good singing pair because their voices match well. And from watching the mtv of their duet, which has scenes from their movie, they look extremely compatible and sweet as a pair! I never would have expected that. I can't wait to watch their movie! I even like the first track which is an uptempo track. Some people say that she doesn't sing these types of songs well, but I disagree. I think she does just fine! Miriam's interpretation of the two mando songs is very good. The typical Miriam ballads on this album sound pretty good and should please fans who like her best for this style of music. It's best if you listen to this cd with moderate expectations and an open mind. I think true Miriam fans will not regret buying this cd.

Expected to be better Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
i expect this CD to be better but it wasn't at all. there is only 2 songs i like which are "little stars" and "Free Walking". The other songs are like terrible and the theme song for concert isn't as good as the ones before. But i do expect Miriam's CD to be better next time since i'm a fan of her songs. i think she spent too much time in movies and forget herself as a singer. That's why she lost to Joey Yung in those awards shows. hope there'll be better songs from her this year.
