In 7th-century Korea, political tensions are running high amongst the three jostling kingdoms, Baekje, Goguryeo, and Shilla, all of whom must pay tribute to Tang China. Shilla's warlord, in an effort to consolidate his kingdom, aligns with the Tang to attack Baekje, starting with the main fortress of Hwang San Bul. As the Shilla-Chinese army led by crafty General Kim Yoo Sin (Jung Jin Young) advances upon Baekje, only the offbeat underdog General Kye Baek (Park Joong Hoon) and his vastly outnumbered army stand in the way. With Kim Yoo Sin throwing out everything from lewd taunts and gung-ho pep rallies to bumbling spies and high-stakes chess, will Kye Baek be able to hold back the Shilla?

The movie is hilarious but if you don’t speak Korean and don’t know its history, then you won’t be able to understand the humor behind the movie.

Historical Setting:
The movie is based on the true event, and historical figures, before Shila-Tang alliance declared the war with Goguryeo, the only Asian nation that was powerful enough to withstand Tang's attacks and actually invaded part of China more than several times, throughout its 900 plus history. Sui Dynasty, the processor of Tang Dynasty, tried to invade Goguryeo more than once but it couldn’t past Goguryeo’s outer most forts. Millions of Sui soldiers died and the cost of the war caused the destruction of Sui Dynasty.

One of the surviving royal family members found Tang Dynasty and it, too, tried to invade Goguryeo twice but they lost miserably. So their hatred to Goguryeo leads to alliance with Shila Dynasty, the weakest Dynasty within Korean peninsula. This alliance, and the Goguryeo’s own internal political power struggle, caused the destruction of Goguryeo when Tang invaded Goguryeo for the third time. However, before they can attack Goguryeo, Shila-Tang alliance had to get rid of Baekje, Goguryeo’s alliance.

Shila and Baekje were archrivals and Baekje was stronger than Shila. However, Shila’s hatred and the passion for revenge on Baekje and Tang’s desire to pay back the humiliating lost to Goguryeo created the alliance between Shila and Tang. The outcome of Hwang San Bul was critical for Shila-Tang alliance because it could alter their plan to invade Goguryeo and to stop Goguryeo’s own plan to invade Tang. (The only obstacle Goguryeo had been its own internal power struggle between Goguryeo military and non-military officials.)

Underlying Humor:
The main humor sprang from the movie was a regional dialect Baekje is using, guh-si-gi, and the Shila generals puzzlement of its meaning. Guh-si-gi is a southwestern dialect that is still being used today in that region and it means THAT/THIS in English but the people from southwestern region substitute that word to subject, verb, and adjective within a single sentence. So the outsiders, in this case Shila soldiers, have no idea what they’re talking about because guh-si-gi can be a name, action, description, location, and etc. The outcome of the war was depended on Shila's ability to solve this puzzling word.

The story is there, except that there are a lot of this and that and it. I just became one of the actors in the film who does not understand. It's full of codes. Anyhow, the scting is great, the pacing is fast so its not boring.The ending just like in any war korean films, the "BIDA" is laways sacrificial.

corea was spelt that way through latin.. the name of the dynasty was go ryo. around the 19th century it was changed to korea when it was translated into english. the japanese had nothing to do with it.

worth watching.. not worth buying, unless it's someone elses money.

At the surface this is not a serious movie, as it seems to focus too much on comedy. Director attempts to use comedy to mock the savage nature of human and war. It is dark humor (or black comedy).

However, in the last 15 minutes, the true meaning of the movie reveals itself.

There are some serious messages the director is bring across:

1. Are we mere pawns in the game of chess played by our political masters?
2. What are we really fighting for? Is 'it' really worth dying for?

Though it is not a conventional movie, some scenes are really memorable, including the two meanings of tiger leaves behind his hide and man leaves behind his name as well as the interesting war strategies.

A good anti-war movie. Wish I can understand 'Corean' language and enjoy the humor.
