Coming somewhere between My Lovely Sam-Soon and Wet Dreams, both in terms of chronology and character, S Diary is a showcase for the many charms of Kim Sun Ah. The "S" in the title stands for "sex", but that seems to be for attention grabbing more than anything as sex, though certainly a part of the protagonist's relationships, is not the focus of the film. S Diary takes a heartfelt and humorously good-natured look at modern relationships - how they start, how they end, and how they're remembered - through the experiences of Kim Sun Ah's strong-minded bumbling heroine Jini, something of a pre-cursor to Kim Sam Soon. S Diary is basically the antithesis of the romantic comedy: the breakup comedy, if you will.
The film opens with a screaming match between Jini (Kim Sun Ah) and her boyfriend (Jang Hyuk) that ends in breakup. Her boyfriend blames their problems on her demanding personality, and suggests she go ask her ex-boyfriends to confirm his complaints. Wallowing in Heartbreakville, Jini revisits in memory all her failed relationships: her first love (Lee Hyun Woo) who left her for priesthood, her second love (Kim Su Ro) who left her for marriage, and her third love (Gong Yoo) whom she left first. She decides to take the advice of love #4 and revisit her ex-boyfriends in real life, but the distasteful meetings end up pushing her further into the pits. As self-pity turns into anger, Jini decides the best road to recovery is revenge. While the first half of S Diary wallows in bittersweet memories of cute beginnings and teary endings, the second half subverts expectations by taking a very whole-hearted turn into mean-spirited comedy. These two parts seem to belong in two different films, and yet fit together amazingly well, because it captures how easily memories and relationships turn sour. Jini's hilariously overboard revenge tactics are cathartic in their ridiculousness. Adults are often not very mature when it comes to dealing with relationships, and this film is a fabulous outlet for all those angry, immature thoughts. Living a good life is the best revenge? Jini knows better...eventually. A bit homely and awkward, yet completely lovable and effortlessly sexy, the role of Jini is basically made for Kim Sun Ah. She has to stretch a bit in playing Jini as a wide-eyed teenager, but few can embody the everywoman with the natural brass and beauty that she does. Kim Sun Ah also gets a great line-up of actors to snuggle up to: Jang Hyuk, Lee Hyun Woo, Kim Su Ro, and Gong Yoo. Kim Su Ro is as amusingly annoying as ever as, and Lee Hyun Woo probably deserves some kind of award for being such a good sport and only looking a bit overaged when playing ridiculously younger than his age. Gong Yoo as the roguish, immature younger guy gets the most time and the most sympathy, not to mention some hot, semi-clothed scenes with Kim Sun Ah. Jang Hyuk, in a cameo appearance, has the least developed character, but he does deliver what is to me the film's watershed moment, a hilariously unexpected dream sequence that prompts Jini into action and me to choke on my drink from laughing out loud. |

| This movie is expensive but cheaper than buying the dvds for My Name Is Kim Sam Soon. I'm glad I own it. It's a well done thoughtful movie unlike the pastel hued fairy tales starring other Korean actresses. I love Kim Sun Ah's face. It's so soothing. I don't believe that this movie is actually autobiographical however. How can someone so tall and pretty hook up with so many weirdos and losers? |

This movie is one of those that i can say has a moral lesson. But what's sad about it is that she love all 3 whole heartedly. Unfortunately, it turned out that the relationship is only casual and nothing really special. She in the end get back to them by extorting some money but at still ended up sad and alone. I thought this is a comedy but for me it's more drama that comedy. Overall, it's good to watch. |

Super D!

Although I brought this DVD some time ago, I only last weekend got around to watching it and if I had known how good it was, I would have certainly watched it then. Its an excellent romantic comedy, too, and features some highly talented actors here that make it worth the while for them alone, but with an added script of comical wit, dead pan humor and farcical antics its gives a good ounce of pure entertainment. Okay, some of the humor could have been funnier, but its comedy still hits the mark. The S Diary of the title is a girl's musings about her past boyfriend's exploits (and Ji Ni certainly gets exploited) after getting rebuked by her present boyfriend, due to him wanting only a physical relationship and not the love Ji Ni wishes for, and he also propositions her (as he boards a train and sets off into the sunset) to find out if her 3 previous boyfriends actually loved her the way she thought. So she does, by finding her diary in an attic and then recapping, by her written words, what had gone wrong and why - and was it really mutual love these 3 guys gave her as she believed. When she discovers the bitter truth about her 3 exs, she then decides to get her own back on them and with unpredictable results (for the guys anyway). For instance one of her vindications is adding Viagra in the communion wine of her religious boyfriend. As mentioned there is a really good strong cast here. Along with Seon Ah Kim (who nearly everyone knows from "My Lovely Sam Soon" TV series...well, apart from me, as I haven't seen it yet) you get Jang Hyuk ("Wind Struck", "Volcano High", "Please Teach Me English") as her last boyfriend, although playing only a cameo here. (Has Jang Hyuk by now finished his military tenure and returning to the acting circuit?) There is Su Ro Kim (also "Volcano High", "Educating Kidnappers" and "Big Bang") Gong Yu ("She's On Duty" and "Spy Girl"...great guy! Hope to see more films with him in!) and Na Moon-Hee ("The Quiet Family" and the recent "Cruel Winter Blues") who plays Ji Ni's mum - a superb cast! I also found this another film that can have a longevity about it. I have only seen this once so far, but like "She's On Duty" it can be film to watch over again and still be equally enjoyable. If you haven't seen this yet and would like a nice romantic comedy with some light slapstick humor and fun, then this is worth it. Could be another Korean comedy classic in the future. Regions across the board, too, as its not just a 3! And, eh, yes, I do realize what the S stands for, but I'm sticking to Super! |

SULTRY ROMANTIC
| I enjoyed this movie very much. I really liked Gong Yoo in this movie. This movie is more of a chic flick because it gets to discuss the things that run in our heads when it comes to love and past relationships. It's a fun movie to watch, you won't regret it. Although the lead actress could've acted better by acting out the emotions properly to make it seem realistic. |

| Movie was so cute, 'specially if you like sweet movies, like it was a little meh at the beginning, but you slowly get to know KimSunAh's character you start to understand what she's feeling and such. It a cute movie. I liked it! :) |
