Many people find k-drama boring because it is always made up of a mish-mash of common ingredients e.g. quiet suffering heroine, super rich eligible Prince Charming, family conflicts etc. But the challenge is how you piece all these well-used ingredients together to make a unique experience that differentiates a good drama from a lame one. I would classify Phoenix in the former category. There are a lot of tears and pain, yet without much sappiness. Phoenix is a love story. The underlying theme being how important timing is to make love work. But Phoenix explores much more than that. This k-drama explores a lot about circumstantial love. What would love be like again for a couple in a different time, in a different environment, in a different situation? When I finished this k-drama, I was really awed by how realistic the multi-facets of love were, put across in such an interesting setup. Love is happiness, love is sadness, love is holding on, love is letting go, love is compromise, love is sacrifice, love is giving, love is taking, love is possessing, love is blind, love is meaningless, love is reality, love is warm and love is lonely. Love is all of the above, and how it is exhibited and/or interpreted depends on the individual, and they are all found in this k-drama! Lee Ji Eun (Lee Eun Joo) starts out as a rich, spoilt, carefree and idealistic girl. She falls head over heels for Jang Sae Hoon (Lee Seo Jin) and is willing to risk everything to be with him. But when put to the test, i.e. enduring hardship, she fails Sae Hoon. After her fathers death, Ji Eun has to grow up overnight. She realizes that love alone is not enough to carry a relationship through and that making a commitment is also about bread and butter as well. I read about the audience's frustration towards Ji Euns wavering behavior, but I did not find it to be so. It is consistent with the character. After her fathers death, she is burdened with the thought that she has caused her entire familys misfortune with her moment of willfulness by marrying Sae Hoon. She cannot forgive herself, and puts herself in a love-exile. She is afraid to reach out, as she is not confident of making a commitment and failing again with such devastating results. Seo Jung Min is like a breath of fresh air for her pent-up frustrated life. Deep inside, she never forgets Sae Hoon, yet she cant allow herself to be with him again. Sae Hoon is the poor student that Ji Eun loved. He is a self-made man of strong principles, and that explains why he could not bend for Ji Eun to accept her parents' help, why he cannot leave a wheelchair-bound Miran after the car accident, and why he cannot forgive himself after Miran's suicide. But his strength has also made him lonely, as he cant accommodate anyone in his world. Then, just as he thinks he has healed after ten years of pain and struggle, Sae Hoon meets Ji Eun again and the old scars are reopened. It is obvious from the very first meeting that Sae Hoon still has feelings for Ji Eun. If he had felt nothing, he would not have behaved so bitterly towards Ji Eun. Your heart will only react if you still feel for that person, and Ji Eun's place in Sae Hoon's heart is confirmed when he buys the villa on Cheju Island from Miran's father. It is never easy to understand a situation from another persons perspective, and in that way, Sae Hoon and Ji Eun are lucky. They have the chance to switch positions, and to understand and appreciate how each other felt, and learn what went wrong in their relationship the first time round. Ji Eun begins to understand Sae Hoons pride as she is now getting the same treatment from Jung Mins family. Sae Hoon begins to appreciate the power of compromise as he persuades a hurt Ji Eun to hold on to her happiness with Jung Min. A good love story is incomplete without the usual roadblocks and villains. Seo Jung Min is the strongest challenger for Ji Euns heart. Jung Mins emotions are so intense and overpowering that Ji Eun cant help but be touched and moved by them. Jung Min elbows his way into Ji Euns heart the way she bulldozed her way into Sae Hoons life ten years previously. But he is also emotional and selfish. In the end, he is unable to do the right thing and come clean to Ji Eun about his father, and it ultimately leads to his pathetic end. Of all the characters, I felt the most sorry for Jung Min as he was the one that was put on an emotional roller-coaster. I felt that Jung Mins love for Ji Eun was doomed from the start. The writers had it all set up! He loves her more than she loves him. Sad but true, Jung Min can never replace the untainted and innocent love that Sae Hoon and Ji Eun shared ten years ago. The writers made Jung Min walk the same path that the younger Ji Eun did, undermining his best intentions with his selfishness. Eric Mun is so charming as the lovelorn Prince, and the writer left a lot of the cheesy lines for him. Yet his delivery was so natural and touching (especially with those bad boy eyes) as to make any woman weak at the knees and beg him to come whisk them away. It was a credible and confident effort, balancing well against the outstanding performances of Lee Seo Jin and Lee Eun Joo. The villain - or rather, the villainess - comes in the form of Yoon Miran. She is a manipulative, insecure and possessive woman. She does not possess an ounce of kindness in her, her only virtue is her love for Sae Hoon. So complete, so hopeless, so destructive. Remember when Ji Eun first fell for Sae Hoon, Miran was so curious how anyone could fall so hard that she asks Ji Eun about her experience. And yet when Miran does fall, she creates a crater with no way out for herself. Miran is a strong woman with a strong resolve. The way she works to get back on her feet shows that it is not going to be easy for her to give Sae Hoon up, and she is true to her emotions to the end. I like Jung Hye Youngs performance. The way she gripped her ring when she was jealous, her look of hatred and despair... I really wished the writers gave Miran a second chance to wake up from her madness. My only complaint about Jung Hye Young is her choice of nail polish colors. Did you see those luminous green-colored toes and her blue-tipped French manicure? Hideous! Lee Seo Jin was so convincing as the strong, stable yet somewhat emotionally complex Sae Hoon. His weakness was only visible to the audience and no one else. The longing looks he cast at Ji Eun gripped my heart and choked me every time. He was able to display this sense of youthful innocence when playing the student Sae Hoon with his wide eyes. And he carried off the older and successful Sae Hoon with a straight face, soft gaze, and confident gait. Lee Eun Joo transformed her perky character into the burdened divorceé very well. Her body language was much more exaggerated and flippant as the younger Ji Eun. Lee Eun Joo changed the way she walked in the latter part, and the light sighs she constantly gave out were also little actions added to illustrate age in her character. There was a lot of dialogue in this k-drama, and many good lines that are thought-provoking and well-written, especially for Miran (you can almost forgive her for her crazy actions). The only problem I had with this k-drama was the ending. Everything seemed to fall into place for all the characters. Although Jung Min's kidnapping and Miran's suicide worked well in the story, I wished it was not so. I had hoped for something less extreme, but then I guess it would not be a k-drama without extreme drama! I highly recommend Phoenix for anyone who wants a lesson about living in someone else's shoes. A long, painful journey it may be (26 episodes is a struggle, even for me!) but ultimately, it is worth every tear. Reviewed by il_mare |

I haven’t forgotten Eun-joo since her untimely death in 2005, and still love seeing her movies from time to time and “Phoenix” here, (although in truth I haven’t been ‘brave’ enough to watch this drama again..yet). Eun-joo’s personality had a strange effect on me when I watched it in 2007, considering Eun-joo’s own sever depression mirrored her Ji-Eun character’s deep melancholy. Thinking about Eun-joo's suicide amidst this drama saddened me quite a lot. I'm sure she'd have that same effect on me now if I re-watched it! In fact when I watched “Phoenix” I had ‘feelings’ for her that made material things seem unimportant; a touch of love from her, I guess. I still love Eun-joo today, and she gives me butterfly feelings whenever I see her in frozen photographs (she’s so beautiful in all ways!), but its great to see that Eun-joo’s always so remembered well in South Korea at the anniversary time of her death. I think Eun-joo’s a very special lady, in ways I cannot totally fathom (we all special, though, of course). Certainly Eun-joo is missed much by many. But concerning Eun-Joo’s dramas the one piece of her that’s still missing for fans is the 2000 drama “KAIST”, which to use as a platform here (as “Phoenix” is a drama of Eun-Joo’s) I’ll plead that hopefully one day “KAIST” sees the light of day on DVD and/or Blue Ray. It being an 81-episode drama I’d imagine 3 volumes makes this hard to re-issue though. But it would be great to see it! It’d be great to see a dedicated Eun-joo DVD about her movies, advertising, TV drams etc, too. But, yeah, “Phoenix” is a very hard drama to watch. It’s brilliant at times, especially some of the acting (boy is this drama demented at times though!), and makes you cry, fall in love and not know what to do with yourself afterwards. But Eun-joo lives on in us all, by the power of love! Nothing is ever lost! God bless you EJL ^^ |

If you are very into reality dramas because your life is too much of a fantasy or if you want to watch Lee Seo Jin (who was as handsome as he was talented) go ahead, watch this drama! The theme of the drama is “It’s all my fault”. In my opinion it’s all Lee Ji Eun’s (lead girl) fault… I don’t understand any reasons for the things that she did (it could be that I got fed up and started watching the drama in 1.5X speed). It was ridiculous. I shalln’t take myself through this again. The ending was not at all sweet; it was bitter and if they were going to end it that way it could have ended sooner without the pain I had to go through of being dragged along with the drama! I feel cheated because I didn’t understand why it took them so long to get together or why they were even apart to being with. It’s in my opinion Lee Ji Eun (not only lost her marbles) didn’t love Jang Sae Hoon (lead dude) at all after her miscarriage and she was forced back with him at the end only because she saw him x many times. I cursed my way to get through to the finish and come the end I was severely disappointed. If they killed the 2 main female characters that would have been a better ending! Also I darn near want to kill Yoon Mi Ran (antagonist girl) and I want to drown Seo Jung Min (antagonist dude) character (I do not dislike the actor)… his character gives me homicidal tendencies! 26 irrevocable hours… made bearable by Lee Seo Jin |

I see a lot of wonderful reviews for this drama and I felt excited when I first received this mainly because Eric Mun was in it :) However, I really could not stand the main characters other than Eric who hardly appeared until many episodes later into the show +_+ This may sound particularly shallow but it certainly ruined my enjoyment of the show in that the cast was made up of such ugly and unbearably annoying characters. The female and male role were played, in my opinion, by those whose faces detached from the show and I could not finish the drama. The storyline would perhaps have been a up side of the show but because of my dislike for these two main castings, I did not like the drama much at all... |

one of my favorites
|
this drama is definitely one of my favorite dramas. unlike a lot of other dramas that concentrate purely on plot, this drama showed much more of the 2 main characters' personality and thoughts. i really liked how it showed how the 2 main characters matured and grew to understand eachother. the acting is so good. lee seojin and lee eunjoo were so amazing, and they were really good together. i ended up becoming so attached to their characters sehoon and jieun. jung hyeyoung was also really good- definitely a talented actress. eric moon was suprisingly good too, although not as good as lee seojin, lee eunjoo, or jung hyeyoung. a lot of people think this drama was kind of draggy and slow, but i didnt think so at all. although it was pretty long, it was always interesting and not slow. i also thought the ending was pretty good too. i often watch the last few episodes again just because i liked this show so much. |

Love Division (by exile)
|
Love certainly tears these characters apart, again...in this! "Phoenix" has been the most emotional experience I have had, yet. Eun Joo Lee's emotions I found the most heart breaking as Ji Eun, and her constantly flowing tears and heavy burdened heart, by her frustrating indecisiveness for Sae Hoon and Jung Min's love, is heartache on overdrive. Eun Joo also died not long after the drama was made, and this drama/loss made it far more hurtful to watch. Never has EJL seared my heart and captured my soul so much! Now I have completed it I feel I 'miss' the whole essence of the drama emotionally. Is this K-Drama initiation or something? The plot seems like a Catholic 'purgatorial trial' by the endured sacrifices Ji Eun and Sae Hoon have to make. The story is strongly emotional and you sometimes wish the characters could have been more sociably considerate with one another. The plot is well written and although credited as how Ji Eun and Sae Hoon are separated in love, gradually learning to know one another by their adverse reversed social status and emotive hardships, I found all 4 characters (with Jung Min and Mi Ran) playing out a more complex whole. There are more lessons here than two hearts maturing within exiled adversities. The characters are oh so emotionally fragile, lost in the noise of their introspective emotions and make life generally difficult for one another. Humorous moments, though, are given by the Yeo-Jin and Bok Ja parts that intersperse the drama, and even when Ji Eun's father threw the ash tray at Sae Hoon's head, I couldn't help finding this a bit funny. I mean...it was like a toddler in a pram throwing its rattle at him! The acting is fantastic! Suh Jun Lee (whose an absolutely great guy...likes Black Sabbath according to his T-Shirt in the "Freeze" extras...and no wonder after "Phoenix's" emotion!) performs really well as Sae Hoon. His hurt is difficult to watch by the yearning heart he has so much for Ji Eun. How on earth, though, could he keep his steely nature in check and produce that MP3 project without a hitch, considering his emotions for Ji Eun. If that was me in love with Eun Joo (I mean Ji Eun), and in charge of that MP3 project I would ended up having some complaining future customers. Would it have been an MP3 player? Hye Young Jung is brilliant as Mi Ran and her tumultuous scenes of self destructive paranoia regarding Sae Hoon's unavoidable love for Ji Eun and diminishing commitments to her is incredible acting, and terribly sad. I couldn't help feel compassion for her. Sae Hoon only commits as a fiancee to Mi Ran due to a car accident they both had and of his guilty reasoning of causing it. Mi Ran is crazy and wrong to hate Ji Eun (even painting her toe nails jealousy green and finger nails depressive blue), but so needing good mutual love, which Sae Hoon could not provide for her. If only she sought the sanity of absolution and ceased to think of Sae Hoon as only a need and held more compassion for him. He could have loved her. Mi Ran's cataclysmic soul touched me by all her shattered dreams. Emotionally, her 'car' crashes more so than Ji Eun's literal car crash when she first met Sae Hoon. Eric Mun's role was well performed and his relationship with Ji Eun absolutely heartbreaking. Pity his love cannot be equally returned by Ji Eun, because of her burden and complex emotions for Sae Hoon. I liked how he danced with Ji Eun in front of his car headlights. Eun Joo is just fantastic and her wealth and emotions are just incredible. She really moves you. Her lovely smiles, sweet voice, warm looks, tearful hopelessness, religious conviction and silent sighs all just break your heart watching her walk through all her mood filled grey. I just wanted to cherish her! Ji Eun is always caught up by her burdened sorrow at not being able to fully help Sae Hoon with his. Little wonder she eventually explodes into anger when past revelations and lies push her to the limit. All these four characters are quite lonely, needful and fragile. I loved them - for me, Eun Joo is easy to love, but Sae Hoon, Jung Min, Mi Ran. too - after all, no matter what disastrous decisions they took, they all went through so much and in many ways and were faultless - but love tears into shreds the raiment of their lives. I'll miss it now its finished and I'll never forget Eun Joo Lee. She really got to me this time 'living' with her for part of 26 hours. "Phoenix", about a fire bird that is re-born after intensive trial and destruction, is exactly what this drama is about, but with emotions hurtling into that trial of fire. Maybe a sort of resurrection of love getting re-arranged. Its one hard and painful story and juxtaposed with the sad loss of Eun Joo Lee can amplify the emotion to extreme heights. You'll cry a river with this one. |
