Oh, NO!!"

There's an old business adage, "Sell the sizzle, not the steak", and it's prominently on display in the promotional photos accompanying director Park Kwang Choon's She's On Duty. The image emblazoned on the DVD's cover depicts lead actress Kim Sun A with long, windswept hair and flaunting a Charlie's Angels pose. Dressed in schoolgirl uniform, this character is every fanboy's wet dream come to life. To be fair, it's not really that big deal, but those expecting a vibrant, whimsical, or even sexy affair due to these photos will be sorely disappointed with the actual product. Like so many films these days, Korean or otherwise, it's really just safe, by-the-numbers entertainment-nothing more, nothing less. If you're familiar with films like 21 Jump Street or Fight Back to School, you'll have some idea of what's going to go down in She's On Duty. This undercover cop comedy centers on Detective Chun Jae In (Kim Sun A, from S Diary). After screwing up a case involving a sex trafficking ring run by the Japanese Yakuza, Jae In gets roped into an undercover assignment at a local high school. She's ordered to conduct around-the-clock surveillance on Seung Hee (the beautiful Nam Sang Mi) by becoming her best new gal pal. Why? It seems her absent father, Cha Young Jae (Kim Kap Soo) is a reformed crook and a key figure in the prosecution of a sadistic mob boss. But that's only half of her problems. It turns out that Jae In isn't exactly thrilled with her one last shot at redemption, considering the fact that she was a poor student and onetime gang leader back in high school (which makes one wonder about the standards involved in the South Korean police entrance exam, doesn't it?). Considering her background, it's no surprise how she reacts to new challenges. When confronted by bullies, the headstrong Jae In beats the hell out of them. When forced to take exams, she cheats with the help of her commanding officer. It's amusing stuff, but it all seems a bit too familiar. Eventually, she falls head over heels for the mysterious Kang No Yong (Gong Yoo), who just so happens to live next door to her. When Jae In's main rival, a gloryhound police detective is installed in the school as a substitute teacher to speed up the case, the film suddenly accelerates into a gritty, bloody conclusion that, while seemingly incongruent when described, actually transitions quite smoothly onscreen. Not surprisingly, things revert back to comedy for an "all's well that ends well" finale. So much has been said about South Korea being the "New Hong Kong," and in terms of cinematic output and production values, perhaps the title is deserved. There have been some Korean juggernauts like My Sassy Girl and Old Boy that seem to have that extra something that typified the best and brightest of the Hong Kong new wave, but as amusing as She's On Duty can be, it isn't even close. It's just far too familiar, both in premise and execution to be considered anything but prepackaged fluff. If this were a Hong Kong movie, Jae In would be played by Miriam Yeung. If it were an American one, probably Sandra Bullock. Even when the movie starts making wild tonal shifts, there's something cozily safe about She's On Duty (and quite a few other Korean comedies). Why? Because there's a definite formula at work here, a fact that practically guarantees you won't be angry at wasting your time or money on the film, but also pretty much insures that you won't exactly be giddy with excitement once it's over. If you like Kim Sun A and/or the very premise, then you won't be disappointed. But if you're looking for that "little something extra," it's nowhere to be found in She's On Duty. "She's On Duty" tells of the competing efforts of cops and gang members to hunt down a mid-level gangster. Kim Sun Ah plays a police detective who goes under cover in a high school to befriend the gangster's daughter in hopes of getting a lead on tracking down the gangster. Lots of complications ensue as we uncover cops on the take, good guys who turn out to be bad guys, and bad guys who turn out to be good guys. Drawing it all together is Kim Sun Ah, who manages to combine wonderful comic timing with surprisingly good fighting skills. Miss Kim's character turns out to be much like Miss Kim's role as Kim Sam-Soon ... foul-mouthed, wisecracking, and willful. Indeed, since this film was released several months before the Kim Sam-Soon TV series, I wonder if Kim Sun Ah didn't land the TV role based upon her performance in this film. I quite enjoyed the mixture of comedy and action in "She's On Duty" and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of Miss Kim. I can recommend this film highly. |

| I thought it was going to be silly but turned out to be one of the best films, very entertaining indeed. Kim Seon Ah is superb. The whole film captured your attention from beginning to end. It is so nice to see a good movie. You won't be led down with this one. |

I thought this movie was pretty okay. I know that I expected more from the movie because of the cover. To me, the cover says it will be a sexy hot high chick fightering bad guys. Then, when you actually see the movie. You will find that the star is kind of old looking. But, what really happened with that girl on the cover? Did they do something with the cover so that she look way younger? Or was it the lighting and heavy, heavy, make-up? Now for the story I think that the story is kind of bad. First, the main star is way too old to pass off as a high school student. Even when the movie started there was a lady sitting next to her on the boat and she said that she didn't look right in a high school uniform. Second, the story doesn't seem that funny. There was some good points but not worth calling it the best movie in 2005. Come on now. Romance, I did not feel the chemistry with the two main actors. They were close but not there yet. Finally, I thought the movie had no direction. They basically could do anything and it would fit in. They didn't need to do a lot of stuff and they could have made some scences longer. I thought that the girl that the cops were protecting was kind of cute. But the girl bully was really hot! The guy was not bad looking either. There are some really good looking people in this movie. That is really all I have to say for some to want to watch this movie. I know I didn't watch in for the story. lol |

After watching the K-Drama "Kim Sam Soon" I eagerly anticipated this movie. If you liked the Kim Sam Soon character, you'll enjoy this movie. Kim Sun-ah (main actress) does a great job in creating a Kim Sam Soo-like character who happens to be a cop. It also was a wonderful match to have Gong Yoo as her leading man once again after their initial pairing in the "S-Diaries". The only trouble I had with believing this movie was that Sun-ah played a high school student. Really now, give me a break - she looks great, but 18? I don't think so. The movie has action, comedy, romance and did I say comedy? Kim Sun-ah really exceeds in this particular genre. Comedy is typically seen as low brow, but it takes talent to carry it off well. A very enjoyable and funny movie. Well worth your time to see this one. |
