YesAsia Editorial Description

Johnnie To and Stephen Chow collaborated for the first time in 1992 in Justice, My Foot! which turned out to be a box-office hit. The following year, they made The Mad Monk based on a legendary folk hero who helps the poor and upholds justice by fighting against corrupt officials. Stephen Chow successfully turns this figure into a hilarious character! Co-starring award-winning actor Anthony Wong, Maggie Cheung and Chow's longtime collaborator Ng Man Tat, The Mad Monk will surely delight all fans of Hong Kong comedy!

Petty and arrogant deity Dragon Fighter Lo Han (Stephen Chow) wages a bet to alter the fates of three unfortunate people on earth. He therefore reincarnates as a monk and starts changing the lives of a beggar (Anthony Wong), a prostitute (Maggie Cheung) and a killer...

Director: Johnny To

Internationally proclaimed comic genius Stephen Chow plays petty, arrogant god Dragon Fighter Lo Han, who is changed into "Monk Chai" and ordered to alter the fates of three bad people on earth, lest he be retransmigationized. Unfortunately for him (but to any viewer's delight) the trio he finds are a prostitute (played by the radiant, remarkably talented Maggie Cheung Man-yuk), a beggar (played by award-winning actor Anthony Wong), and a cold-blooded killer.

It's madness, alright! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
While it appears that Wong Jing had nothing to do with Johnny To's "The Mad Monk", this has the feel of a Wong Jing comedy: The movie's story is the barest of threads and stuff just happens. Indeed, the story basically serves as little more than an excuse to string together a series of gags of varying degrees of funniness.

Stephen Chow is his usual fast-talking comic self; this time he plays a ne'er-do-well god sent to earth to set some things straight. Ng Man Tat, usually a reliable comic foil for Chow's antics, here spends far too much of the movie acting infantile and howling for milk. Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, playing a prostitute who really seems to enjoy her work, is the real reason to watch this film. She has never looked more gorgeous (well, okay, maybe in "In the Mood for Love") and has never given a funnier performance.

The first hour or so of the film are amusing if chaotic. Thereafter, for me, the jokes wore thin and the film's loud antics grew tiresome. Still, all Stephen Chow fans and Maggie Cheung fans should see "The Mad Monk". By the way, this film is not a remake of the 1977 Li Han Hsiang movie with the same title; the two films have nothing whatsoever to do with each other.

Short n simple Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Fantasy-wise, it is beautiful and beyond imagination. Story-wise, seems interesting but I don't know cuz there weren't any subtitles. Action-wise, its one of the best choreographed martial arts sequences in HK film history but too bad there's only one action scene. DVD-wise, best transfer there is but no subtitles, don't know why.

What can I say about Chow Sing Chi movies. He has not made any movies/TV programmes that I have not enjoyed. There are some great moments in this movie. If you're a fan then you'll enjoy it. I am.
