YesAsia Editorial Description

A brutal serial killer is on the loose, and it's up to two very different homicide detectives to catch him in Memories of Murder, a riveting police procedural from Bong Joon-Ho, director of 2000's Barking Dogs Never Bite. Based on an actual series of events that began in 1986, the film centers on a rural cop named Park Do Mang (Song Kang-Ho, from The Foul King and Joint Security Area) and his tense partnership with Inspector Suh Tae-Yoon (Kim Sang-Kyung, from Turning Gate and Tale of the Cinema), a big city detective fresh from Seoul.

Detective Park, who'd much rather spend his time beating confessions out of suspects than be forced to do any actual detective work, mocks Suh, telling him that real Korean cops "investigate with their feet," not their intellect. But as the bodies begin to pile up, the two realize they have to reconcile their differences to stop the killer before he strikes again. However, with numerous leads that seemingly go nowhere, is there any chance they'll catch their man and finally put him behind bars? Or will their unceasing quest for justice actually push these heroes to their absolute breaking point?

Unravel the truth in Memories of Murder, winner of Best Film, Best Director (Bong Joon-Ho) and Best Actor (Song Kang-Ho) at South Korea's Grand Bell Awards! Featuring performances by Kim Roi-Ra, Song Jae-Ho, Park No-Shik, and Byun Hee-Bong, this is one gripping crime thriller that's more than just another whodunit!

Professional Review of "Memories of Murder (DVD) (2-Disc) (Korea Version)"

April 17, 2008

This professional review refers to Memories Of Murder (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
A suprisingly powerful film from the director of the amusing Barking Dogs Never Bite, this film about a serial killer has the tone of Se7en but without the weirdness. More importantly, Memories of Murder has addressed the debate about integrity in police methods with the greatest effectiveness since Orson Welles made Touch of Evil. Song Kang-ho (JSA, The Foul King) is, as always, dynamite as the cop who is obsessed with this case.

Every Korean who sees this film knows, even if I didn't, that this is based on a true story (and from what I can tell is scrupulously faithful to the real events), so there's no reason for you not to know (even if I didn't). The interplay between the city cop and the country cops is well-balanced, and the pacing is sleekly maintained to keep you on the edge of your seat as it works the thriller atmosphere and keeping an aura of authenticity.

Not just the best Korean film of the year, or the best film of the PIFAN festival (though it actually didn't appear in the festival program), but one of the great films of 2003. Certainly the best Korean film since JSA and ... enough superlatives already... this is a ripper and not to be missed if you get the chance!

tailored for western market Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
This film seems to be promising in the beginning but you'll soon find that it is just like watching another of those Hollywood movie with sex and violence as its theme. What a waste of time.

Fantastic! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This film is classy, gripping, wonderfully acted, illustrates superb cinematography and is one of the very best movies of its genre....not only in Korea, but the world. I am gradually introducing my friends to the glory that is Korean cinema because at the moment they are missing out on loads of fabulous gems...this film is no exception. Highly recommended!

A monumental achievement! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This review is actually based on the 2-Disc Korean Edition. Regardless, you should see this film in whatever format necessary.

With Memories of Murder, Bong Joon-Ho (continuing his winning streak with The Host) has crafted one of the most effective thrillers in recent memory. Based on true accounts of Korea's first documented serial killer, Memories of Murder follows two detectives (Song Kang-Ho and Kim Sang-Kyung) during a culturally tumultuous time in South Korea's history as they try to solve a series of murders. Bong rightly decides not to offer a proposed solution (i.e., identifying a killer), but instead focuses on a series of red herrings, culminating in a heartbreaking ending shot that implicates everyone who sees the film. Unlike more mainstream serial killer films like Silence of the Lambs and Seven (both good films in their own right), Memories of Murder does not dwell on a crazed individual on the fringes of society, but instead alludes to an individual who is so ordinary, he cannot be described. What is truly scary is that most killers are not Hannibal Lecter-esque. They are ordinary people that we might see on the street.

See this film by any means necessary. Aside from a relentlessly disturbing atmosphere and score, Bong Joon-Ho and the whole cast did a fantastic job in treating the subject matter with respect and restraint, while never undermining the severity of the events.

NO.1 KOREAN MOVIE !!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
For me this is the most enjoyable korean movie you can see, based on true events (very accurately too) of serial killings that went on for many years and at a time when the government didn't have any recources to offer the policemen on the case, it shows how the officers involved had very little experience with serial killings, one of them trying to get any criminal he can find to confess, another who resorts to beating the suspects and a new policeman on the case who introduces the idea of using psychology to catch the killer. It concentrates very heavily on the characters of the film and is very funny at times due to the streak of dark humour, it also has a very realistic feel that puts you there, so unless you are an action junkie who has no time for depth, if there is only one korean movie you get to see you have to see memories of murder.
