| ..and say Crystal's album is great. The tracks are so good, especially 1,2,3,6. I never thought some of the songs wud be as good as they wud be. But this album is on another level to some out there. This is a 9/10. Every track I can listen again and again. |

ok.. not great
| liu yi fei is good at acting, but not a very good singer. a few of her songs are good like "lucky grass", but many of them are still not up to singers like a-mei, jasmine leong, and jolin. 8/10 |

Dragongirl's debut!
|
I picked up this album after hearing track 5 on tv: i was instantly hooked by the song's tune and the singer's sweet voice. After listening to the whole album i must say that i am very pleased with my purchase and that this is a very good debut album indeed. What surprised me the most is that all the songs were composed by Japanese, Korean & Western composers rather than the chinese: not a bad thing....just different. Heard her singing track 5 live on JSG, but live singing skills were really poor. Recommend tracks 1, 2, 3 and 5. |

Wow, Just Wow...
Wow, Just Wow...

I thought that "All My Words" (the Japanese-language debut by this artist) was spectacular, but I honestly think the Mandarin is even better. So, since I gave the Japanese CD 10 stars, I'll give this one at least 12 stars. Bursting onto the music scene is putting it mildly when mentioning Yi Fei. She has exploded and she is HERE. Wow. Such sweet yet charismatic vocals from a newcomer is rare and she has amazing talent in that vocal area. I also like how consistant this CD is (for the most part...I'll detail the songs in a moment) in musical style and it's not a jumble of a new artist throwing a bunch of styles at the listener just to show they can. Yi Fei has created herself and her musical image already and it's magnificent. Track 1 is one of my favorite tracks (and my favorite on the Japanese release as well) with it's pop-rock up-tempo energy and range. It's one of the heavier songs, but I love that, so it works for me. Track 2 is a piano ballad, but still along the pop-rock genre and it's fluid...simply gorgeous and a perfect song to follow track 1. Track 3 is a bit on the unusual side with it's arrangement and there are perhaps too many people singing in the chorus, but it's an interesting and engaging song none-the-less. Track 4 is a simple yet elegant piano ballad. Track 5 is back to a heavier pop-rock up-tempo sound that is fun any way you look at it. It also shows the latent power in Yi Fei's vocals. Track 6 reverts to more mellow, subdued vocals over a magnificent guitar-based song that is almost an emotional experience. Track 7 is almost R&B in nature and the finger-snapping that would have made a relatively novel intro continues throughout the entire song...which honestly can get a bit annoying after awhile. Fortunately, after a few listens to this wonderful CD the listener begins to tune it out. Track 8 is a basic ballad at heart, but shows again some of the strongest vocals. Track 9 is my favorite track on this entire CD with a distinct modern/contemporary arrangement and tone to it's up-tempo pop-rock majesty. Track 10 is...well...OK, here is the one song I absolutely cannot bear. Thankfully, it is the last track and easy to omit from my listening experience on this otherwise pristine release. A traditional intro full of old-style Chinese instruments gives way to full-blown hip-hop with not only some man rapping over her vocals (which are the weakest on the CD), but another man is actually grunting in a quite distracting way. I suppose this showcases variety on the part of the artist, but I personally don't like rap or hip-hop and I also don't feel it fits with either the essence and flow of the rest of the CD or Yi Fei's overall musical style. Anyway, my favorite and most recommended tracks are 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9. Tracks 3, 4, and 7 are OK and as I have mentioned...I really don't care for track 10. Still...not liking only one song due to personal preference is not bad (just my own taste). The artist is extremely wonderful and charming. Her songs are excellent and her singing is magnificent. I think her vocals are already stellar and refined...and can only look forward to hearing more from her in the future. I really recommend this CD to anyone, especially if you like singers like Rebecca Hsu, U-Ka Saegusa, Stefanie Sun, Gigi Leung and others who tend to sing along these similiar lines. As to WHICH edition to purchase: the Japanese or the Mandarin...I say buy them both if you can! Yes, this singer is really that worthy. |
