Professional Review of "Unlimited"

With the exception of a few up-and-coming young artists, Canto-pop artists tend to be fairly hands-off when it comes to their music, leaving production work to other producers. That's why I was pleasantly surprised to open the booklet for Miriam Yeung's latest and last album with Gold Label Unlimited to find these words: Produced by Miriam Yeung. While Miriam did not actually work on any of the individual tracks, it's nice to see an artist taking control of her music and making an effort to make each album not just a simple portfolio of singles, but rather a connected set of music that should form a whole. After a string of minor disappointments, Miriam saves the best for last as Unlimited is not only my favorite Miriam album from her soon-ending Gold Label era, but it's also her best album since 2002's Miriam's Music Box. Unlimited features most of her usual collaborators such as Jason Choi, Yu Yat Yiu (both of the music production collective People Mountain People Sea), C.Y. Kong, and Keith Chan, who all deliver solid works. But Miriam chooses to open with a track from a most unexpected collaborator - Hong Kong's premier young rock-n-roller Endy Chow. The result is the fun rock track "Kiss All the Girls" (Track 1) that gets the ball rolling. Miriam has explored her rock side before (although her voice has never been quite suitable for it), but this is the most fun I've ever heard her doing it. Miriam also explores her rock side in C.Y. Kong's "Walking Firmly" (Track 3) and Eric Kwok's "Big Fool" (Track 5). The former is a dark but surprisingly encouraging declaration of hard work and dedication in life, while the latter is a sweet power ballad about the bliss of living the simple life with a fool. With only a difficult crescendo disguised as a chorus, "Big Fool" features the better vocals of the two, but Kong and his detailed arrangement wins out as the better rock track. The other new collaborator in Unlimited is rising new star songwriter/singer/producer Justin Lo, who wrote and produced "Yik Shu Says" (Track 7). While Lo is known to be a fairly talented singer/songwriter, his effort on "Yik Shu Says" seems to be largely derivative from both other Canto-pop and 70s soft rock ballads. It's a solid track, but also slightly underwhelming from an artist of his caliber. On the other hand, his producing work on "She Succeeded, He Didn't" (Track 2) fares far better. A fairy tale about a failed romance that involves a singing contest and record stores, Justin opts for a simple arrangement that allows Miriam's voice to tell the story while adding enough to create a fairy tale atmosphere. Additional credit goes to Lin Xi, who penned the lyrics for the entire album, for cramming as many words as possible into the song to craft a rounded story. However, the removal of breathing noises in the long verses shows too much tweaking on Justin's part, making the vocals sound unnatural for the sake of technical flow. The one and only radio plug so far, "The Way of My Existence" (Track 6) by Keith Chan, is very much a repetition of the "Keith Chan" ballad that has grown tiresome over the years, but Miriam's delivery makes it sound as fresh as ever. More soothing tracks such as Pong Nan's "On Findlay Road" (Track 8) and C.Y. Kong's "I Can Only Dance" (Track 9) help move the album at leisurely and pleasant pace, which was set up at "Big Fool" and carried to the end with a jazzed-up remix of the strangely overlooked "He's Here" (Track 11) by Ivana Wong. As someone who prefers the old Capital Artist days of Miriam, when she displayed a far more positive outlook and versatility in her music, Unlimited seems far more like a maturation rather than concession on Miriam's part. As an artist who earned her popularity from tragic ballads, the lack of such ballads in Unlimited still earned her the favorite female artist award at the CRHK Music Awards. This shows that while her recording career may have slowed down, her popularity has not slowed down one bit. Here's hoping that after a creatively mediocre stint at Gold Label, Miriam is off to bigger and better things. by Kevin Ma |

i always find miriam's music very special..unique..different and fresh and this album is no exception some memorable tracks.. track 1 - starts with a slow pace and a mid-tempo chorus..really brings out the energy and a good start on the album...love the mix of guitars+drums track 2 - one of my most favourite tracks..this song give sa fairytale feeling..as the lyrics does talk about a story between a boy & a girl..i'd would really see if miriam can sing this live..cause there were absolutely no pause in her singing..there was also no chorus..no repetition..just pure singing on a fairytale track 3 - miriam brings up the tempo back..but w/not much beat this time..she plays w/her vocal..quite electric with a catchy melody..throughout the song is all electrical voicing until near the end where u can hear her soft melodious voice ending the song track 4 - brings back to the 40s/50s feeling..quite mysterious and a bit fantasy feeling...i like miriam's vocals in here..her vocals had improved a lot since the last album she made.. track 5 - this song..after listening to it a few times is quite catchy..meaningful lyrics..starts with a slow ballad feeling..then bringing up with a powerful chrous w/guitars and drums..again miriam's vocals are really strong..and she plays with her voice a bit track 6 - it brings back to her usual slow ballad feelings..good piano intro and a really soft-lighted melody track 11 - the musical instrument has been rearranged..it's a bit on the jazz/blue side..i find this verison a lot better than the original..it makes the song a bit more interesting and easier to listen to..miriam's vocals are also really soft too.. overall it's a really nice album..it would've been better if she had a few more tracks..since this is her last album from gold label |

Well the album sold 25,000 in 3 days when first released, so clearly she still a popular fanbase ^_^ I was a fan after watching Love Undercover and quickly wanted to snap this album as my first. Although Miriam Yeung is changing record producers, clearly a lot of work has gone into this publications, its almost like a photobook/diary, I think its a very personal thank you to her supporting fan. The music itself, my favourites have to 1,3,5 but her singing is consistent throughout the album. The best thing about Miriam is the upbeat nature of her singing and her vocals. I would say her singing has matured through the years but she keeps this personal, fun side to her work. Support Miriam and buy! ^__^'' |

Since those 3 famous female singers released thier albums "Especial Kelly","Close Up",and "Unlimited" at the same time,so I'll compare them .If I choose the best one ,it should be the "Especial KElly" .Though it's New+Best, but I really like her new song. She has released her New+Best in 2004-(RED),I felt a lil bit boring."Unlimited" is not bad ,at least it has some good songs, such like "My Survival","Big Silly",and "Tan Sheu says"..."Close UP" is bad, great disappoint ,enough said |

Wonderful Arrangments

This is my first Miriam album, so I won't be making any comparisons to previous albums. I bought this album solely for Track 05 'Big Silly'...it really IS that good. It's reminiscent of North American 80s pop power-ballads and Miriam's voice comes through strongly and with fantastic range! My other favourite is Track 10 which is a slow, mellow, almost country-like song. Great melody, and Miriam again gets to display some nice range. The remaining tracks are primarily soothing, slow-tempo, calm songs (aside from Track 01 and 03 which are rock and experimental rock, respectively) which are fairly average except, and this is a BIG except, for their arrangements which have a broad selection of instruments (even an Irish flute in Track 04). I like putting this album on just for a wallpaper-soundscape while I work or am just wanting background music; cranking the volume up for Track 05, of course. Recommended to fans of well-produced and professional music; fans of 80s inspired power-ballads; and anyone in need of some pleasant background music to work to. 7/10. |
