Full House director Pyo Min Soo delivers another lighthearted romance with What Planet Are You From? (a.k.a. What's Your Star? and Which Star Are You From?). Korean drama favorite Kim Rae Won (Rooftop Room Cat, My Love Patzzi) stars as the conflicted leading man opposite rising actress and singer Jeong Ryeo Won. Jeong left a great impression on viewers last year with her performance in My Lovely Sam-Soon; this time, she not only takes on the challenge of two roles, she plays against type as a brash country girl. Playful and touching, odd couple romance What Planet Are You From? shows that sometimes love can be found in the most unexpected places.
Successful young director Choi Seung Hui (Kim Rae Won) had the world at his feet, but his life falls apart after the sudden death of his fiance (Jeong Ryeo Won). Three years pass, and he still cannot let go of the past. Seung Hui travels to the countryside to clear his mind, and vows to move on with his life. At this moment, he encounters Bok Shil (Jeong Ryeo Won again), a clumsy and opinionated country girl who greatly resembles his deceased fiance. Seung Hui soon finds his heart opening to love once more, but to start anew, he must overcome the shadows of the past.

MBC <넌 어느 별에서 왔니>는 한국 트렌디 드라마의 설정을 조금씩 뒤튼다. 첫사랑이 살아 돌아오는 대신 똑같이 생긴 여동생이 나오고, 능력 있는 남자와 아무것도 모르는 여자의 이야기인 줄 알았더니 여자가 갑자기 재벌집 손녀임이 밝혀지며, 신데렐라가 된 줄 알았던 여자는 집에 들어간 뒤 오히려 불행해진다.
즉, <넌 어느 별에서 왔니>는 드라마의 익숙한 설정을 다른 방식으로 이용한다. 언니를 사랑한 남자와 그 동생이라는 기막힌 사연을 가진 승희(김래원)와 복실(정려원)은 그 때문에 사랑이 방해당하지만, 그 때문에 서로를 포기하진 않는다. 누가 뭐라 하건 그들은 서로를 사랑하고, 만나면 상황이 어떻든 행복한 연애를 한다. 남이 뭐라 하건 연인들의 만남은 행복하고 즐겁다.
<넌 어느 별에서 왔니>는 그 행복한 연애의 힘으로 남녀 주인공들이 허구한 날 눈물을 흘리며 “우린 이래서 안 돼!”라고 외치는 트렌디 드라마의 새로운 접근법을 제시했다. 그 중에서도 승희가 외국으로 가려는 복실을 잡고 공항에서 함께 달리는 장면은 <넌 어느 별에서 왔니>의 연애관을 집약한다. 아무리 힘들고 어려워도, 만나면 그냥 좋은 사람이 있다면 일단 잡아라. 그리고 달려라. 최승희의 말처럼, 인생은 예측 불가능이다. 그럴 때 할 수 있는 건 오직 하나, 달리고 달리는 것뿐이다.

Disappointed!

Really, I am generally easy to please with K-Dramas. I watch them with my wife who is korean. My wife liked it and thought it was ok but not the best. For me I thought it was very amateurish, the acting was almost like a slapstick comedy. For the life of my I could not relate to any of the actors or actresses. Sorry but my feeling is pass this one by. I think it is helpful if you mention K-Dramas you like a lot. My Choices would be All About Eve, Grand Chef, Dae Jang, Be Strong Geum |

Hear-warming drama

“What planet are you from?”, in my opinion, started very nicely. Jeong Ryeo Won played a country girl, Bok-Shil, very well. Her Korean was vibrant and brought to me how Korean language was spoken by country-side people (somewhat being looked-down by snobby people). I lived almost thirty years away from Korea, not speaking Korean, even though it is my native tongue. I realized that she delivered the atmosphere of such country girl in her vibrant tone. She was brash. Her raw vitality caught me by surprise. She was adorable in the drama. I was hooked to the drama and kept watching all episodes in two days. The story is well written, each scene is compact unlike other kdramas, and the dialog flows very smoothly. Many times my heart was aching because of the love story, and I was crying. What a hear-warming story it is! |

A must see for Kim Rae Won fans...

...but only after you've seen Rooftop Room Cat, Sunflower, My Little Bride and The Grand Chef. This is better than My Love Patzzi and probably on par with Love Story in Harvard (as far as the storytelling goes, not the production quality which was terrible in LSIH). The storyline in this drama is tired and predictable. Jeong Ryeo Won could be really annoying at times. It's hard to understand why he loves her character other than the fact that she looks exactly like his first, lost love. They have some nice moments and there is some comedy relief. Kim Rae Won really carries this drama. I just wish the female lead character had been written differently or maybe it would have been better if she were played by another actress. I didn't care much for Jeong Ryeo Won in My Lovely Samsoon either. |

Sadly, this drama did not 'do it' for me. I did not feel connected with the characters. I just found the story and premise to be somewhat standard and unimaginative. I know others reviewed it positively so if you agree with them on their other reviews you may want to give this a spin. I just found it to be a pedestrian K-Drama with nothing new, exceptional, fresh nor unique. |

What Planet Are You From? I was very prepared to hate Jeong Ryeo Won’s guts after “My Lovely Sam Soon”, but by the end, her performance was beautiful… sadly enough she wasn’t the reason I love the movie… it was that dude… Kim Rae Won… he’s so handsome and funny… I need not go on, but he made me believe!!! And when he sang the song and asked his ex girl for blessings… I was gone! The hardship that they had to go through made the drama worth it… so very beautiful… from then on, my addiction for K- Drama grew and so did my love for Kim Rae Won… nevertheless, I hope you love it like I do… CHEERS! |
