The Ghost Theater (AKA: Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater) (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

For the longest while, the closest Korean cinema has come to "musical" has been the obligatory karaoke scene in every romantic comedy. But things have been looking up lately, with the prominent place given to song and dance in films like The Fox Family, Dasepo Naughty Girls, and Highway Star. Theater producer and critic Jeon Gye Soo jumped into the genre in 2006 with his debut film The Ghost Theater, a fantasy musical about, appropriately enough, ghosts in a theater. Fun, eccentric, and just a bit kitschy, the film is deliberately styled as a midnight movie in the vein of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. With a theatrical set, surreal lighting, and ghostly atmosphere, the film takes on a gothic veneer to complement its slightly campy, strangely philosophical designs. The opening film at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, The Ghost Theater integrates dark comedy, social parody, experimental visual elements, and some good old gender bending into its musical repertoire. Cinema fans will also appreciate the film's musing exploration into the changing culture and significance of the movie theater.

In search of her grandmother who disappeared at the movies one day, young girl So Dan (Kim Kkot Bi) ends up at a run-down, dimly lit theater where she meets various wandering spirits who call the theater home. Among her newfound friends are a gothic-looking gisaeng (Han Ae Ri), a Japanese WWII lieutenant (Jo Hee Bong), a giddy Afroed clown (Park Yeong Soo), and portly Elisa (Park Joon Myeon, I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK), who claims she's the last Joseon Dynasty princess. They and her missing grandmother all seem to be connected to a mysterious banned film from years ago.

Professional Review of "The Ghost Theater (AKA: Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater) (DVD) (Korea Version)"

    July 30, 2007

It is late at night, just outside the humble home where a disillusioned young high school student lives alone with her frail grandmother. Despite the late hour and inclement weather, the old lady is determined to go out, claiming that the neighborhood theater is about to play an old film the young girl has never heard of, one that grandma herself starred in back in the day. She wanders out into the night, never to return. The girl, now all alone, abandons her schooling to search for her missing grandmother, eventually taking a job in the box office of the theater that was to be grandma's destination in the hope that if she simply waits there long enough the old woman will finally arrive for her phantom movie screening. But grandma's movie isn't the only phantom here, the theater itself playing host to a quartet of singing ghosts who appear late at night, eventually befriending the girl even as they torment the theater manager with memories he'd do anything to just leave behind. This is the Midnight Ballad For Ghost Theater.

An odd little film, though likely not quite in the manner the marketers had hoped, Midnight Ballad came on the scene billed as South Korea's answer to Tim Burton and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And while both influences are certainly evident - there's an obvious love for Burton in the production design - there's a melancholic wistfulness to the picture that prevents it from being the full on campy ride that many expected while also revealing another key influence, that being Tsai Ming Liang's Goodbye Dragon Inn; both films share a longing for the glory days when theaters were a sort of temple, temples that are now being allowed to slowly crumble and decay. The fusion of such disparate influences isn't entirely successful but any time you may be tempted to write the thing off, the picture just goes and does something so compelling you just can't help but crack a great big grin.

In many ways Midnight Ballad feels most like a stage production half-adapted to the screen. Staging and sets are minimal, the action confined to a very limited number of performers - seldom more than five on screen at a time - and dominantly occurring in only three rooms. Even the big production numbers - up to and including the rampaging bull-headed man hinted at throughout the film - are the sort that could easily be executed on stage, and while you can certainly argue that it doesn't take full advantage of all the visual tricks film may make possible, the trade off is the sort of natural character interplay you get from theater, with most scenes played out via long takes with all the principal folk involved. It takes a bit to get into the rhythm of the piece as a result, but once you're there, you find a depth to the characters and a sort of naturalness to their interplay that lets you buy into things more than you might expect.

The film's most significant weakness is, however, a glaring one. It is a musical without nearly enough good music. There are only a handful of numbers scattered throughout the piece and of those only two - the stellar bit featured heavily in the trailers and another glam rock number - that truly stand out, the other pieces sadly lacking in pace or catchy melodies. There is still plenty to enjoy in the film but if you're selling a film built around singing ghosts you really do need more singing - and better - than what's on offer here.

A film that mostly seemed to confuse local audiences, Midnight Ballad has received a minimal DVD release. The disc and packaging are pretty bare but what's most important to non-Korean speakers are the transfer itself and the English subtitles, both of which are excellent. The transfer is anamorphic, in the correct ratio and very crisp; the subtitles clear and well translated. It's a flawed film but still a compelling one on many levels, one that comes with a cautious recommendation.

great film Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
some of the actors might not have the best voices in the world..but who cares..
this is a film about a group of special ghost, and the voices works with the plot.
and the voice of princess Elisa is in itself enough to love the songs.

it is very much a mix of stuff like the rocky horror picture show and tim burton.
it is a comedy, but has its dark moments.

i love this film in all its silliness.

Annoying, insulting "musical" Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
Purchasing THE GHOST THEATER was the biggest film-related mistake I've made in a long time. This is a classic case of a film’s synopsis (on YesAsia.com) desperately trying to mislead viewers and trick them into purchasing a lesser product. The undeserved comparisons to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (laughable) and mentions of "dark comedy" (funny to a child, maybe) and "good old gender bending" (a flat-out lie; there is none) led me to believe this film might be a new step forward for Korean cinema; a true musical with a sense of style and a touch of the bizarre. Well, it's not.

Calling THE GHOST THEATER a "musical" is the first, and worst, offense. There must be a total of four, maybe five musical numbers scattered throughout the film's nearly two-hour running time. The songs are staged without any energy or flair whatsoever, and the lyrics have nothing to do with the "story," if you can call it that. Most of the song lyrics are near-nonsensical strings of curse words, combined with unrelated gothic poetry.

The film's other offenses include abysmal acting, an incoherent script, and a complete disregard for the language of film. Director Jeon Gye Soo comes from a stage background, and this fact is painfully obvious in the execution of his debut film. All of the performers are guilty of over-acting and over-projecting, as if they were on a stage, in front of an audience of disinterested children. The worst offender is the young girl, So Dan (Kim Kkot Bi), whose emotional range seems to be limited to "yelling." The script takes a weak, muddled storyline and drags it out for two hours, when it just as easily could have been wrapped up in a taut thirty minutes. And I get the distinct feeling that director Jeon would have been perfectly happy to set up a camera in one position and let the actors perform on a stage for two hours, because that’s basically what they do. His grasp of the film medium is limited only to dolly shots, rolling the camera in and out in a failed attempt to add vitality to limp performances and storylines.

So, is there anything good about THE GHOST THEATER? Yes: the art direction. The film’s creators obviously wanted to emulate the style of American director Tim Burton, as their sets and costumes could well be leftovers from BEETLEJUICE or EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, but that’s where the comparison ends. Unfortunately, Jeon doesn’t seem to realize that there’s a difference between “kitschy,” which he was apparently aiming for, and “cheesy,” which is what THE GHOST THEATER topples into, headfirst.

This film was disappointing on nearly every level, and as an audience member, I felt alternately annoyed, patronized and insulted that a director would ask me to endure such a mess (and pay $29.95 for it). I strongly recommend that you AVOID this film.
