Someday (DVD) (End) (OCN TV Drama) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

The first Korean drama to integrate animation and live action, Someday is like no drama that has come before. Through outstanding cinematography and visual design, this groundbreaking drama beautifully lenses Korea's contemporary urban landscape and peeks into the moody, imaginative world of a comic book artist. Written by movie screenwriter Kim Hee Jae (Hanbando), Someday represents another landmark work from Yellow Film, whose other 2006 titles include the critically acclaimed Alone in Love and Freeze. A "movie-like drama" with top-end production values, Someday features film star Bae Du Na (The Host), drama favorite Kim Min Joon (Lovers in Prague, Damo), and rising stars Lee Jin Wook and Oh Yoon Ah from Alone in Love. In contrast with its fanciful images, the drama stays candid and grounded in its exploration of modern relationships and romance, presenting a story that is both painfully realistic and longingly lighthearted.

Although Korean-Japanese cartoonist Yamaguchi Hana (Bae Du Na) has found great success with her romantic comic books, she herself doesn't believe in love. Raised by her grandmother, she is content to live in her own world of writing and drawing, but one day her comic gets discontinued. Unceremoniously thrown back into the real world, Hana travels to Seoul where she meets Kim Seok Man (Lee Jin Wook), a kind-hearted private investigator with a tragic past, and Go Jin Pyo (Kim Min Joon), a doctor and ardent comic fan who observes life with a detached eye. As Hana retraces the tragic love story of her elderly neighbors with Seok Man and Jin Pyo's help, she realizes that she herself is experiencing love for the first time.

Professional Review of "Someday (DVD) (End) (OCN TV Drama) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"

September 10, 2007

This professional review refers to Someday (DVD) (End) (English Subtitled) (OCN TV Drama) (US Version)
There was a time when cable in Korea just meant that nearly unexplored land where old dramas went to die, a sort of cemetery of yesteryear's elephants. Inundated by sitcoms of dubious interest, daily dramas that couldn't succeed on their first run on network TV, and old historical dramas only a couple of hardcore fans would know about, the landscape of Korean cable TV was an excuse for the three major broadcasters to find some use for their vast archive of programs, and not much more. Although the situation is only now starting to change very slowly, and there's still a long way to go before Korean cable TV can reach the quantity and quality offered by its Japanese, American and European counterparts, it's a world under a rollercoaster of huge changes that could even impact the way their big sisters on network TV approach their production system.

Perhaps the biggest change emerging in the last two years has been that of cable channels producing their own dramas, something unheard of before, save for late-night erotic sitcoms and the like. Born just last year, channel tvN has already produced a couple of series, including Hyena and Romance Hunter, a sort of Sex and the City with a little more Korean flavour, and a nice, relaxed and realistic approach to storytelling that you rarely find on network TV dramas so occupied with scoring big in the ratings. Other interesting experiments came from SuperAction, with their Dasepo Girl series. A companion to Lee Jae Yong's maligned cult comedy Dasepo Naughty Girls, the show shown on cable, divided into really brief mini-episodes, captured the atmosphere of the original online comic the film was also based on much more effectively.

One of the most important cable channels in Korea, OCN has been the Korean answer to HBO, focusing on movie premieres and top imported series. But when they announced they'd also start producing their own dramas, a lot of people in the industry were excited. Although it was first slated to broadcast on MBC, and only later signed with OCN, Someday in many ways showed a little bit of what should become the future of Korean dramas: pre-broadcast shoots, more focus on production than star casting, and a film-like quality to the whole story elevating it from a simple time killer. Those ingredients set Someday apart from most efforts broadcast in 2006, at least on paper. The now infamous tendency of shooting while the show is broadcasting started raising eyebrows when Han Ji Min and Eric Mun injured themselves in a dangerous stunt for the drama Wolf, and from there on many industry insiders started understanding the price to pay for on-the-fly productions was too risky and burdensome, especially since the payoff (ratings) was in clear decline.

Someday completely shot before airing its first episode, something quite rare for Korean dramas. Eyes of Dawn did it in 1991, and the 1996 historical drama Im Kkeok Jung almost did it, shooting a good 30 out of its 50 episodes before broadcast. But the difference seen in Someday was an eye opener for many: film-like atmosphere, excellent cinematography and top-notch editing, good soundtrack, generally good acting as the actors had more time to delve deep into the characters. Just for that unique vibe, Someday is well worth watching. Director Kim Kyung Yong has a past in Chungmuro, as part of the production team for Silmido and This Charming Girl, while writer Kim Hee Jae can be pretty much considered one of the top writers in the country, the same pen who brought to the screen hits Silmido, Everybody Has Secrets, Another Public Enemy and Hanbando.

The casting, too, is quite interesting. Rather than focusing on big name stars, producers Yellow Films (responsible for the wonderful Alone in Love) put a bigger emphasis on actors fitting with the characters they were portraying. Of course this was only possible being a cable drama, nearly removed from rating wars and the like, but it's nice to see they weren't afraid of experimenting even in such a conservative area like casting. Although her popularity has inevitably increased after The Host, Bae Doo Na is still more appreciated overseas than she is at home. Kim Min Joon does have his share of fans, but certainly wasn't known for his acting skills, while Lee Jin Wook's only important role to date was in Alone in Love. Rounding up the cast was Oh Yoon Ah, a former racing girl turned actress who's been improving at an alarming rate in just a few years.

The ingredients were all there: an interesting cast, top-notch production values, and a pretty intriguing story. Bae's character Hana, a Japanese-Korean cartoonist going from enfant prodige in Japan to lonely soul looking for answers in Seoul, and the comic book manic going after her (Kim Min Joon) remind of countless youth romance comics which make up for a large portion of the manhwa fanbase in Korea (just like in Japan, with their counterpart shoujo manga). But perhaps that's also Someday's biggest flaw. We have interesting characters, the story is told in a very relaxed mood reminiscent in some ways of Alone in Love, but at the end of the day we're dealing with just another love triangle, and even the character interaction and the way the story progresses doesn't distance itself too much from the sunjeong/shoujo canon. What of course sets this show apart is the fact the story is told mixing animation with live action, in an almost poetic way highlighting the characters' feelings.

Someday is only a half success, with the average script having to take the blame, as the acting and production values certainly leave very little to be desired (although they also never really impress as well). More than anything, it's a very interesting experiment of things to come, and in that case a worthwhile experience. It seems the era when cable was just the land of old, slow-paced mammoths slowly dying under the weight of countless repeats is over. Someday we'll also get our first masterpiece on cable. This wasn't the case, but it certainly was a good start.

We will fall in love... Someday
On paper, Someday is a drama dream come true. The 16-episode cable series is produced by Yellow Film, which also made the excellent Alone in Love. Production values are top-notch, with all filming completed prior to airing rather than shot on the fly concurrent to broadcast like most Korean dramas. It's the first K-drama to combine animation and live-action and stars acclaimed actress Bae Du Na. As an added bonus, it even co-stars Kim Min Joon, one of my favorite Korean actors. What really sent my anticipation through the roof though were the trailer and teasers, which were nothing short of stunning. The beautiful visuals, the production design, the whimsical mood, the quirky dialogue, the live-action comic book panel design - if the drama looked like the trailer and teasers, Someday would be a great artistic breakthrough not just for Korean television, but for visual media.

It's no wonder then that I was rather underwhelmed when I finally got my hands on the Someday DVD, only to discover...a Korean drama. Someday is not the second coming. It certainly looks beautiful in comparison to the average Korean drama, but it looks nothing like the trailer and teasers, save for the opening theme which has the same fanciful sets and mustard overtones as the teasers. Once I got past my deflated expectations, however, I was able to enjoy Someday for what it was: a charming, well-produced trendy drama with an engaging, if typical storyline and winning performances from the cast.

Bae Du Na stars as Hana, an odd duck Japanese-Korean cartoonist who doesn't believe in love. After her comic gets axed, she goes to Korea and befriends Lee Jin Wook's cheerful guy with a tragic past and Kim Min Joon's rich, dashing, and obsessively smitten psychologist. Hana's a bit obsessed herself, stubbornly trying to piece together her missing neighbor's past. What she uncovers is a heartrending love story that serves as inspiration for her new comic, and insight into her own increasingly complicated relationships.

If there's any one thing that lifts Someday beyond the average drama, it's star Bae Du Na. The screenplay is spotty, the characters are overwritten, and the story is a retread of safe waters, and yet, when Bae widens her round eyes into the camera, all is momentarily forgiven. She turns quirky, awkward, and "alien-like" into adorable and alluring as only as she can.

The rest of the cast isn't too shabby either. Lee Jin Wook and Oh Yoon Ah are two of the fastest rising names in Korean television, having jumped swiftly into lead status with fairly little buzz. Thoroughly professional with no pretensions of sassy cuteness, Oh Yoon Ah may not attract the kind of fan following other actresses get, but her strong, mature presence is a welcome change. Similarly, Lee Jin Wook has the idol looks, but has thus far been more popular with producers than viewers; as an actor, he comes with no baggage and great promise, handling his difficult role surprisingly well. In an industry full of sensitive, pretty boys but few men, Kim Min Joon comes across as a polite rogue, and here he again balances a brazen character with charismatic underacting.

At the end of the day, Someday still falls into a recognizable Korean drama prototype, what with the expected romantic quadrangle, emotional anguish, and increasingly angst-laden story. Despite the production values and potential for greatness, Someday does not offer any major breakthroughs, unable to escape the trap of melodrama. But it does pull off some minor breakthroughs by making the most out of an existing formula. The soundtrack is fabulous, one of the best I've heard, and the overall look of the drama is perfectly polished. The animation, though understated and occasional, does offer something new and ambitious for Korean television, and the animation aesthetic is surprisingly subtle, using line and watercolor drawing to evoke more of a traditional art form and nostalgic atmosphere. With all four leads wisely underplaying their roles, Someday also manages to naturalize its own theatrical overtures, and differentiate itself from other dramas in tone and presentation. Considering the sincerity, ambition, and talent that went into the production, Someday comes across as a flawed drama that's easy to like and worthy of support.

someday we'll fall in love...or will we? Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is actually, as it boasts, a unique drama.
But only about half of it is really anything special. The first half is really great writing. The second half falls more into the conventional drama pattern. However, relatively speaking, it's still a really good drama.
All four characters are intelligent and have realistic and dimensional personalities.

I think many people of my generation will find likeness with Hana (lead female).

And it is written for people with brains. The characters don't explain everything they do, and they don't do ridiculously stupid things. And interestingly enough, it is the male characters in this drama who end up having breakdowns, not the females.

It's a good illustrative work on love and the question of "What exactly is love anyway?"

Half the story takes place in Korea, and half in Japan and has some really wonderful photography and some nice (though for me, emotionally flat) animation.

I felt awkward in Jin Pyo's and Hana's scenes together because they seemed kind of father-daughterish and it was weird to me that this character who's so smart about the other aspects of his life, could be so dense to the fact that the determination to possess someone is not love but an asphyxiation. Hye Young's character was by far my favorite (even though by personality I more resemble Hana) because she was strong and admirable and could foresee everything from the get-go.

It was good casting because you could tell they were actually smart people playing smart people.

It didn't have that feeling of 'phony intellect'. You know like when you watch cop/doctor shows and there are those 'characters' who walk and talk fast and act like what they're saying is really smart, but you're sitting there going "...Pfffftt."

I really loved the packaging. Neat and nothing slides around or falls out.
The soundtrack is quite nice, incorporating light acoustic indie songs with traditional drama ballads.

I loved this drama. Enjoyed the two male lead actors especially. The concept, story and the intergration of the comic drawings and story made this drama unique. No evil plots, just a really nice romance story
without all the dramatics.

Charming story within a story Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I also watched this drama on AZN this month and was quite pleased with it myself. I actually stopped watching Korean dramas for a while because of they all seemed to streached the story out and nothing was really resolved. The last K-drama I watched before "Someday" was "Autumn in My Heart" and spent a majority of the time fast forwarding or yelling and telling the characters how stupid they are. Not with "Someday".

Bae Du Na did a lovely job playing Hana, the Japanese- Korean main character, who seems to be voided of emotions, especially love.
Lee Jin Wook woos the ladies in with his charismatic character, Seok-Man, who has a smile on his face everyday until tragedy hits.
With these two characters paired together, you can start to see and feel Hana start to feel what love is for her. You'll start sighing and giggling at how cute first love is and eventually start humming along with the 3 main songs in the series (which, BTW, I can't WAIT to by the OST!!!)

I have yet to watch an Asian drama that doesn't have faults. "Someday" does drag at times and the characters act in ways that many Americans doesn't understand (myself included!!! just tell the girl you like her!!!)

"Someday"'s plot is also a bit refreshing. A love story develops and matures because of a love story. Very charming and different. Must see!
