Professional Review of "Alpha (ALBUM+DVD)(First Press Limited Edition)(Japan Version)"

December 3, 2007

This professional review refers to Alpha (Normal Edition)(Japan Version)
First, a small confession: this reviewer has not had a chance to familiarize himself with the visual kei subgenre of Japanese rock. As a result, I will have to go on the basic knowledge that visual kei is a style of music where the looks of the performer is just as important as the music itself. On only their second album, alice nine. has already built a solid fan base, the essential key to any musician's career. However, in the world of visual kei, a loyal fan base is even more important, as the number of people who take to a band's look also help determine that band's popularity. Thankfully, Alpha proves that alice nine. doesn't forget that music matters just as much for a visual kei band.

Unlike what some may assume about bands with punk looks, the band's second full-length album doesn't stray too far from what one may find in the Japanese pop world. While it has its share of alternative tracks, it's also filled with listener-friendly tracks as well. One of these tracks is cosmic world (Track 2), an engaging rock song with a surprising light tone that's more in the spirit of American pop rock than British-based glam rock. The most surprisingly commercial track is "Iris" (Track 8), a 7-minute track with a melody that actually sounds more ballad than rock, if not for the guitar-driven arrangement that builds on volume as the song progresses.

In fact, most of the tracks on Alpha carry a somewhat light tone, which may not necessarily fit the band members' looks. Tracks such as Aoi Tori (Track 3), 9th Revolver (Track 5), NUMBER SIX (Track 7), and Tracer (Track 10) are much more American-influenced and may even show up on MTV if they're sung in English. While they aren't strictly pop tracks, they do follow the traditions of a pop song, with several verses and a repeating chorus. The only real difference is the arrangement of these tracks, which is entirely guitar-driven.

The best tracks on the album are the songs that wander between the blurry line of alternative punk and energetic pop. The best representative of an effective track in that vein is the powerful opening track ZERO (Track 1). While the heavy drum and loud guitar riffs tell you that alice nine.'s music isn't exactly suitable for the grandparents, the powerful chorus provides a great opening track for the album. In other words, the band knows how to pump listeners up for what's to come, and ZERO does its job very well.

Of course, there is a track or two that show alice nine.'s alternative punk rock roots. -Dice- (Track 6) doesn't really have a discernible melody (at least judging from what one can hear from the vocals), and enjoyment really depends on tolerance for this kind of stuff. For some, this type of noise-driven hard rock can be acclaimed as "intense" and "riveting", or dismissed as "noisy" and "headache-inducing". However, its existence helps make Alpha a well-balance album in terms of musical style. alice nine. doesn't just cover one type musical style. In fact, they manage to cover various subgenres of rock, engaging both fans and non-fans alike.

Recommended Tracks: ZERO (Track 1), cosmic world (Track 2), JEWELS (Track 4), "Iris" (Track 8), WHITE PRAYER (Track 9), Tracer (Track 10).

Worth every penny! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm so happy I bought the Limited Edition version of Alpha!

The included DVD has the music videos to Cosmic World and Blue Planet in high quality. It's really nice.

The CD is amazing! Alice Nine sounds wonderful (like always) and the CD's track order is very good - you don't have all the slow, soft songs together and all the harder, faster songs together; there's a nice mix to the track list. The songs also have beautiful meanings; probably some of their deepest songs ever are on this CD.

And the included booklet with lots of pictures and the lyrics was very nice. I wasn't expecting that.

Overall, a great buy!

Excellent! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Even though I've just recently started getting into Alice Nine, I must say they are one of the best Visual Kei bands I've ever heard. Alpha is an excellent album for all fans of Alice Nine or Visual Kei, as well as a good first-start for those who've just gotten into them. All songs are excellent, especially ZERO, cosmic world, JEWELS, NUMBER SIX, White Prayer, and Blue Planet. Cradle to [Alpha], even though it contains no singing and is rather more trance than rock, is a beautiful closing piece for the album. Whoever gets this album, will definetely enjoy it!

would have been cool Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
maybe if yesasia.com didnt take out the goodies that are supposed to come with the limited edition first press... but instead they sell it off when it clearly states "Not For Resale" so i would go buy somewhere else where they will actually give you the freebies that are supposed to come with it (Poster and Autograph Book) but other than that the cd is really well done i would just go somewhere else
