YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Sato Makoto committed suicide on September 4, 2007, leaving behind a legacy of socially conscious documentary filmmaking. This six-disc boxset contains five of Sato's documentaries, including his most well-known Living on the River Agano, as well as short films and bonus features.

Disc 1: Living on the River Agano (1992)
In 1964, a chemical factory in Niigata Prefecture dumped mercury into the Agano River, the beginning of a manmade tragedy that would affect locals for years to come. Mercury poisoning led to high occurrences of Minamata disease, a neurological syndrome that causes severe physical and psychological ailments and death. Sato Makoto and his crew of seven spent three years in Niigata documenting the life and thoughts of locals.

Disc 2: Artists in Wonderland (1998)
Artist in Wonderland, or Mahiro no Hoshi, follows the experiences and activities of three artists with developmental disabilities.

Disc 3: Self and Others (2000)
Self and Others explores the life and works of renowned photographer Gotsyo Shigeo who passed away in 1983 at the age of 36. The documentary looks at his photos, personal notes, audio recordings, and more.

Disc 4: Hanako (2001)
This sensitive documentary looks into the daily lives of a severely mentally challenged girl and her father and sister.

Disc 5: Memories of Agano (2004)
Ten years after making Living on the River Agano, Makoto returns to the Agano River basin area to document how the area has changed.

Disc 6: Short Films and Extras
Hoikuen no Nichiyobi (1997) documents Sato's Sunday at a parent's event for his daughter's school, while Megisama kara no Tegami (1999) records his child's growth process and own living details. This disc also comes with interview, trailer, and other features.
