YesAsia Editorial Description

Five years after blockbuster drama Winter Sonata, Bae Yong Joon returns in the lavish historical fantasy The Legend (a.k.a. Four Gods). The Hallyu star portrays Korea's legendary Gwanggaeto the Great, the 19th king of the Goguryeo Dynasty whose legacy of territorial expansion extended well beyond Manchuria. Created by the famous writer/director team behind 1995 blockbuster series Sandglass, this mythological historical fusion epic caused a major uproar in the media from the very start with its high-caliber cast that includes Moon So Ri (Oasis), Choi Min Soo (Sandglass), and Park Sang Won (Sandglass). The drama's staggering $40 billion won production costs are rumored to have even exceeded the budget benchmark of sci-fi blockbuster D-War. After numerous postponements, The Legend finally exploded onto small screens nationwide on September 2007. With some critics and viewers placing the drama's CG work in the same league as that of Hollywood film Lord of the Rings, The Legend boldly raised the bar of standards for Korean dramas. Bathed in mysterical splendor, the 24-episode series chronicles King Gwanggaeto's entire life from his youth to his turmultous ascent to the throne and territorial conquests.

The story begins with the son of heavens Hwang Woong (Bae Yong Joon) who descends to earth with his guardian powers - wind, rain, cloud, and sky - only to witness his faithful bear tribe in constant battle with the rival tiger tribe headed by Ga Jin (Moon So Ri), a female priestess holding the power of fire. To stop the bloodshed, Hwang Woong takes the power of fire from Ga Jin and seals it inside a ruby necklace called "the heart of Ju Jak". Helpless and wounded, Ga Jin retreats to a cave where she is treated by Hwang Woong and falls in love with him. But her unrequited love turns sour when Hwang Woong entrusts the heart of Ju Jak to his love Sae Oh (Lee Ji Ah), the mother of his newborn son. Fueled by jealousy, Ga Jin abducts the baby and throws him off the cliff, enraging Sae Oh who becomes destructive setting everything on fire. Unable to suppress her furor, Hwang Woong makes the difficult decision of ending his own lover's life. Before ascending back to the heavens, Hwang Woong leaves behind four mythical artifacts and the prophecy of a new king. Two thousands years later, the king is born and the legend begins.

A long time ago, a tribe that respected the tiger and controlled fire called the Ho-jok (Tiger Tribe), ruled the world. They eliminated and assimilated all tribes except the tribe that respected the bear, called the Ung-jok (Bear Tribe). The Tiger Tribe and the Bear Tribe fought, and Hwanung could not bear to see so many people getting killed. He brought the three gods of nature; Baek-Ho (the White Tiger), Cheong-Ryong (the Blue Dragon), and Hyeon-Mu (the Black Turtle-Snake). He removed the power of fire from the leader of the Tiger Tribe, Gajin, sealed the power into an artifact called the Heart of Ju-Jak (the Red Phoenix), and gave it to the woman he loved; Se-o. However, Gajin was mortally wounded while attacking another tribe, and she seemed to die until Hwanung healed her. This thoroughly convinced Gajin to not make a grudge against Hwanung. When her tribe were revived to take back the power of fire, they didn't listen to Gajin and decided to attack the Bear Tribe. Gajin then slew her tribe's council with her own blade, and escapes from her own tribe and heads towards the Bear Tribe, deciding to become Hwanung's woman. However, Hwanung likes Se-o and declared his love for her, not knowing that Gajin was watching them secretly when this took place. Gajin was infuriated by this and began reforming the Tiger Tribe and attacked the Bear Tribe. Unfortunately, this was the time when Se-o was pregnant, and when she had given birth, the baby was kidnapped by Gajin who offered Se-o a deal to trade her baby for the power of fire. When Se-o refuses Gajin, Gajin responds by dropping Se-o's baby from a cliff, leading to Se-o going out of control and releasing the Heuk-Jujak (Dark Phoenix), even though Hwanung had saved the baby. (Note: Jujak is roughly the equivalent of Phoenix.) Hwanung's subordinates, the White Tiger, the Blue Dragon and the Black Turtle-Snake fought the Dark Phoenix, but they were no match for it. Left with no choice, Hwanung used his Heavenly Bow to kill Se-o, the source of the power of the Dark Phoenix, and managed to seal it once again in the heart of the Red Phoenix. Gajin committed suicide by jumping from the cliff because she now "had no reason to live in this world any more." Hwanung sealed the powers of the 'Four Gods' (The Red Phoenix, White Tiger, Blue Dragon, and the Black Turtle-Snake) in certain artifacts and left them in the care of certain people, telling them that they will wake when the King of Jushin is born.

Many centuries later, Damdeok, the reincarnation of Hwanung, was born. Along with him, the artifacts of the guardians of the King were born. Damdeok met difficulties in becoming the king of Goguryeo, mainly because of Yeon Hogae who mistook Damdeok for the murderer of his mother, and his father who turned the king's parliament against him.

FANTASTIC LEGEND Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I fell in love with Bae Yong Joon in Winter Sonata but he looked absolutely gorgeous in every
part of this movie!!!! I normally don't like stories or movies with a lot of bloodshed & fighting
but this was well worth watching. The costumes were fabulous. I too would like to purchase
this DVD with english subtitle. Would you know if you will be getting this in?

very interesting Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A story with a bit here and a bit there from other various familiar stories though supposed to be based on Korean history. Not perfect but nevertheless very interesting and should capture your desire to watch till the very end. Bae is in absolutely top form. There is not a single frame in the whole drama that he didn't look totally remarkable. You just cannot take your eyes off him at all. He is definitely charming and may be is the best looking guy ever. I wasn't quite sure if the older female lead is fit for the character she played but she did execute her role well especially at the end she was super. The younger female lead (the younger sister) has yet to build up her acting skills and experience. It is definitely well worth watching if even just for Bae and Bae alone because he is the ONE for this role nobody else could have done it better.
