Extreme Asian Cinema makes a splashy return with The Machine Girl, director Iguchi Noboru's gloriously gory splatter film about a schoolgirl with a rather destructive limb. North American video company Tokyo Shock co-funded this knowing exploitation film, which has earned notoriety for the unbelievable and entertaining manner in which it pushes the boundaries of good taste.

Typical teenager Ami (Yashiro Minase) enters revenge mode when everything she loves is taken from her. Already orphaned after her parents took their own lives, she loses her younger brother Yu when he and his friend Takahashi are killed by arrogant Yakuza offspring Sho (Shimazu Kentaro). Enranged, she confronts Sho, only to be tortured by Sho and his drill-bra wearing mother (A/V star Honoka), leaving her with an amputated left arm. However, she's nursed back to health by Takashi's parents (Ishikawa Yuya and A/V star Asami), who teach her the art of street-fighting and outfit her with a mechanical machine gun arm. Now armed and exceptionally dangerous, Ami takes the fight back to Sho, his mother, and even some mechanically-enhanced demon warriors. Mayhem, madness, and over-the-top bloodletting ensue.

Quickly earning a cult following based on Internet buzz, Machine Girl received its North American video release before its corresponding Japanese theatrical and video debuts. Still, the Japanese DVD release eclipses the North American release, thanks to the inclusion of some exclusive extras. Besides a behind-the-scenes documentary, trailers, and a photo gallery, the release includes a trailer for the second Tokyo Shock-funded project, Tokyo Gore Police, as well as the "Machine Girl spinoff". Also directed by Iguchi Noboru, the 20-minute short film Hajirai Machine Girl features a different "Machine Girl" played by Kijima Noriko.
