YesAsia Editorial Description
Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Michael Miu, Felix Wong, and another future movie star, Francis Ng, are among the seven sons sent to fight the Liao invaders, while Ken Tong plays the Song prince. Carina Lau, Kiki Sheung, Teresa Mo, Mimi Kung, Tse Ling, Margie Tsang, Kathy Chow, and Sharon Yang take up arms as the brave women of Yang who ride to war in their fallen husbands' and brothers' places. Adding a fantastical twist to the oft-sung tale, The Yang's Saga brings heaven to earth with Chow Yun Fat playing a deity whose mischief begets tragedy for the Yangs. Other faces in the crowd include Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, Carol Cheng, Alex Man, Ng Man Tat, Angie Chiu, Liza Wang, Maggie Siu, Jamie Chik, and Michael Tao. Off-screen, Leslie Cheung sang the drama's classic theme song, and the director of the series was none other than acclaimed film director Johnnie To.
Comes in deluxe photobook packaging.

Many if not most of Hong Kong's biggest homegrown movie stars and filmmakers started in television in some form or another. Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Stephen Chow, Maggie Cheung, Simon Yam, Francis Ng, Anthony Wong, Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo - they all paid their dues at TVB before moving on to bigger and better things on the silver screen. TVB dramas of the eighties and nineties really offer a treasure trove of achievements and embarrassments, many of which are no less memorable than the stars' later movie outings. To me, Andy Lau's most representative role will always be Yeung Gor on Return of the Condor Heroes. Before he became Hong Kong Cinema's best dramatic actor, Tony Leung was Hong Kong television's best mischief, dare I say funnier than Stephen Chow who tested his mo lei tau humor on TV before moving to movies. Aaron Kwok was the jokester, Francis Ng was the family sitcom everyman, Louis Koo wasn't tanned, and Simon Yam scarred me for years as the psychotic clown on Angels & Devils, which incidentally beats Hard-Boiled as my favorite Chow Yun Fat-Tony Leung pairing. Basically, if you want to see Hong Kong's greatest actors as fresh-faced young'uns earning their cache to leap to the silver screen, TVB dramas are the way to go. There are a lot of classic TVB dramas now available on DVD with English subtitles, but it can be difficult to invest the time and heart into a long serial, especially if you're not already initiated into the wonderful world of TVB production values (or the lack there of). For something short and sweet but packed to the rafters with A-listers, check out the 1985 costume drama The Yang's Saga. It's only six episodes long, but it's got a staggering cast list covering all the biggest stars of the time. When TVB made The Yang's Saga in 1985, they were aiming to bowl audiences over with star power to win back the ratings from the rival station. Everyone was required to make an appearance and everyone did, from hot young stars like Andy Lau and Tony Leung to soap opera hotshots like Chow Yun Fat and Carol Cheng. In many ways, the cast of The Yang's Saga reads even more impressively today. It's amazing to think that 25 years ago, Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Chow Yun Fat, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Francis Ng, Ng Man Tat, Maggie Siu, Teresa Mo, Alex Man, Kathy Chow, Maggie Siu, and Liu Kai Chi, to name a few, were ALL in the same TV drama - and looking mighty young under their thick eighties makeup. For TVB fans, Yang's Saga is even more exciting, truly a nostalgic trip back to the studio's golden years and most beloved stars. The Yang's Saga is the only drama to cast all Five Tigers - Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Michael Miu, Felix Wong, and Ken Tong - TVB's face of the eighties. That alone already puts it in a special category of its own, and the five actors play to their screen personas of the time (Tony Leung as the reckless youngster, Ken Tong as the prince, etc.). The series itself about a legendary military family that selflessly served the Song Dynasty is also a good representative of the historical martial arts costume dramas popular in the eighties. You get the young tragic heroes, the old-school action, the war saga melodrama, the family strife, the court politics, and even heavenly intervention, all set on fabulously fake-looking sets. Oh, and one of the series' writer-directors was named Johnnie To. Yes, that Johnnie To. |

Not Too Bad
|
I've hesitated in watching this probably becasue I was doubtful as to how those tvb 'fardans' and 'siusangs' will perform their kungfu moves and thus ruin the story. I was pleasantly surprised because the stunt team did a relatively good job. The standout characters like a very young Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Andy Lau and already established actors Michael Mui and Chow Yun Fatt have certainly made their mark. A small twist of added fantasy with heaven & earth (plus involvement of deities) luckily haven't stray too far from the legend. If you enjoyed the above, perhaps I would recommend Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Ng Long Bakqua Kwun) starring Gordon Liu as 5th Brother, Kara Hui as 8th Sister, deceased Alexander Fu as 6th Brother and Lily Li as matriach and many other legitimate martial arts actors as other Yang brothers. Two best pole fights ever in martial arts movies famously directed by legendary Sifu Director Lau Kar Leung. |

short but sweet~~`
|
talk about star studded. this super short version of the the yang family is oozing with talent and power! my mum had been telling me for years that there was such an adaptation and i dedicated myself to finding it on the net. the yang family is famous. the star studded cast (with serious talent) reinforces the power and fascination about the warrior clan. yes, there is a little extra fantasy stuff there (hong kong tends to do that) but it certainly doesn't ruin the story. it is a worthwhile purchase i would think. though i do have a slight objection: Michael Miu should've been Liu Lang but then should Andy have been given Si Lang's place, he wouldn't have had the talent to act out the pain and heart-torn feelings of Si Lang. |

Great price
|
I think 11 dollars is pretty good price for 6 chapters in one disc. There are dinifitely lots of star power. But, I am not a fan of the storyline and not really fond of the hocus pocus. |

Classic Series
|
I watched this series when I was younger and was extremely excited to find out TVB decided to re-release it in full on DVD with English subtitles. Unfortunately no re-mastering was done, so video and audio quality are not the best - there are even signs of film deterioration, you can see faint marks in several scenes. However this should not make the story any less enjoyable. |
