YesAsia Editorial Description

Hong Kong's master of silliness Wong Jing harks back to nineties cinema with the hilarious nonsensical period comedy On His Majesty's Secret Service! Setting its plentiful gags in the royal palace, this throwback laughfest embraces all the gems of the genre - wordplay, physical comedy, chop-sock action, wacky props, questionable special effects, and A-list stars mugging for laughs. Louis Koo and Barbie Hsu team up again after Connected to play a goofy feuding couple, while comedy queen Sandra Ng hams it up as the scheming Empress who's also a ninja! Additional comedic support is provided by genre regulars Lam Tze Chung, Kingdom Yuen, Leung Ka Yan, and Law Kar Ying plus Mainland stars Tong Dawei (Red Cliff II), Song Jia (Curiosity Killed the Cat), and Liu Yang (Bullet & Brain). Martial artist Fan Siu Wong (Ip Man) also brings some credible action to the mix in an over-the-top turn as a villainous eunuch.

Intrepid inventor Royal Dog (Louis Koo) is part of the elite imperial bodyguard team tasked with protecting the inept Emperor (Liu Yiwei) and Empress (Sandra Ng). Unlike his brother Royal Tiger (Tong Dawei), however, Royal Dog can't fight if his life depended on it. What he lacks in kung-fu prowess though, he makes up for with wacky (untested) weaponry concocted in his workshop. When the Emperor decides to hold a competition to choose a suitor for Princess Rainbow (Song Jia), Royal Dog becomes an unexpected top contender, much to the displeasure of his sassy girlfriend Faithful (Barbie Hsu). There's nary time for romance though when there are so many people out to kill him and the Emperor, including a cross-dressing female assassin (Liu Yang), head eunuch Lord Unicorn (Fan Siu Wong), and even the Empress herself!

Professional Review of "On His Majesty's Secret Service (DVD) (US Version)"

October 12, 2009

Wong Jing goes back to the old school with On his Majesty's Secret Service, a truly madcap period set comedy in the classic early 1990s style. Although the master of the form himself, Stephen Chow, isn't starring in such films anymore, there's certainly no reason to stop making them, and in his absence, Louis Koo has stepped up to the plate, accompanied by a great cast of Hong Kong and Mainland stars including Barbie Hsu, Tong Dawei (Red Cliff II), Song Jia (Curiosity Killed the Cat), Liu Yang (Bullet & Brain), Fan Siu Wong (recently in Ip Man) and even veteran genre favourite Sandra Ng.

The plot, such as it is, follows Koo as Royal Dog, an inventor and royal guard, who does his best to protect the rather useless Emperor (Liu Yiwei) and the crazy Empress (Sandra Ng) while trying to handle his feisty fiancee Faithful (Barbie Hsu). His skills are put to the test when a number of assassination attempts are made on the Emperor's life as part of a sinister and convoluted conspiracy, with half the court seeming to be plotting in one way or another. Things get even more complicated when a female assassin (Liu Yang) turns up planning to kill the evil eunuch Lord Unicorn (Fan Siu Wong), only to be mistaken for a man and have most of the women in the cast fall in love with her. To top things off, a contest is announced to choose a husband for Princess Rainbow (Song Jia), which Royal Dog inadvertently ends up being the favourite to win, despite the fact that his brother Royal Tiger (Tong Dawei) is head over heels in love with her.

There's both more and less to the story than this, though needless to say, in narrative terms On his Majesty's Secret Service is for the most part pretty incomprehensible, and is definitely best enjoyed with the brain switched off. As usual, Wong Jing is more concerned with cross dressing than double crossing, and the old favourite genre theme of gender confusion plays an important and amusing part. The film really is non-stop wackiness, and he throws pretty much everything imaginable at the screen, and more besides. Things do get enjoyably surreal in places, and the film is all the funnier for it, with some side splittingly random and unpredictable moments, often involving Royal Dog's silly inventions, most of which go humorously wrong. As is usually the case with films that pile on the jokes, some are hit and miss, though a surprisingly high percentage of them do manage to find their mark. Those which fall flat are generally unnecessary modern pop culture references, the only one of which that actually works is a bizarre, hilarious throwaway nod to Ip Man.

The cast are all on great form, and really seem to be having a lot of fun with the material, and this goes some way to dragging the viewer along with the madness. Although Koo is no Stephen Chow, he certainly gives 110% in the lead role, and has just about enough charisma to shoulder the film. The female cast are all very easy on the eyes, and Barbie Hsu and Song Jia in particular turn in fine comic performances, really giving their all. The presence of Sandra Ng adds a certain sense of nostalgia, bringing back fond memories of the genre's heyday.

The film looks surprisingly good, with some handsome production values, sets and costumes, as well as some fun use of special effects, all of which helps to raise it above its often shabby peers, not to mention many of Wong Jing's own previous cheapskate efforts. It also benefits from packing in plenty of martial arts action, with Fan Siu Wong getting lots of chances to show off his considerable skills. The choreography is reasonable enough, and although the fight scenes are mainly played for laughs, they are quite exciting at times.

Whether or not to recommend On his Majesty's Secret Service is straightforward - for all Wong Jing fans, or anyone who misses the days when nonsense comedies ruled the roost, it ranks as a highly enjoyable must see. Other viewers should still get a good number of laughs while being thoroughly bewildered, thanks to the likeable performances from the game cast and a general sense of cheerful lunacy.

average at best. Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Wong jing is not my favourite director but he has done some good films that have raised a few chuckles, this film here is just pushing average with minor entertainment value. thankfully it was not as awful as kung fu sweetheart and kungfu mahjong 3 but that is not saying much. Comedy wise louis koo does a decent job in his role but again he is not at his best especially when he is required to pull faces at the screen. this is your typical mou-lei-tou film with nothing really to shout home about. it is the co-stars that annoy though they are constantly mugging the screen with less than funny scenarios to play off.

The action is also very average and does not bringing anything new to the screen even with martial arts star fan siu wong as the villain which is dissappointing.

that pretty much somes up the film which is pretty much average all round, borrowing elements from his previous efforts. with the only reason why i am rating it a 3 star is because i purchased this along with kungfu cyborg which was appalling, the worst film in this current generation.

Relentless comic chaos Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Louis Koo stars as Royal Dog, one of the elite troops task with guarding the Emperor and Empress. Royal Dog, however, has no martial arts skills to speak of; instead, he is an inventor of wacky contraptions employed in the defense of the royal family. His overeager fiancee Faithful (Barbie Hsu) grows impatient with her absent-minded beau; she then goes ga-ga over a cross-dressing undercover assassin (Liu Yang) whom all the women in the palace find irresistible. Throw in the evil schemes of eunuch Lord Unicorn (Fan Siu Wong) to overthrow the emperor, an absurd contest to win the hand of Princess Rainbow (Song Jia), and the comic chaos generated by the goofy emperor (Liu Yiwei) and the abrasive empress (Sandra Ng) and you have all of the makings of a hilarious Stephen Chow movie from the 1990s.

Louis Koo is no Stephen Chow. He seems to labor over comic bits that Chow could toss off with ease. But Koo does his level best and is ably supported by a solid cast and some genuinely funny sight gags. The costuming and set design are lavish and the martial arts on display here are sometimes spectacular. For better or worse, this is a Wong Jing movie. Its story is a bit chaotic, it doesn't really add up to much, and at least half of the jokes fall flat. Nonetheless, the movie's non-stop comic mayhem yields enough laughs to make "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" worth watching.
