YesAsia Editorial Description

Japan's original kaiju monster returns in Godzilla Resurgence! Written by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Anno Hideaki and co-directed by Anno and special effects veteran Higuchi Shinji (Attack on Titan), the blockbuster film features the largest Godzilla in history that undergoes several stages of evolution onscreen. In reference to the kaiju's film origins, Godzilla Resurgence (a.k.a. Shin Godzilla) takes inspiration from Japan's recent disasters and pressing environmental and geopolitical problems faced by the world today. More than just a thrilling monster movie, the film is also a bitingly wry political satire on government bureaucracy and crisis management. Featuring a sprawling cast with many cameos, Godzilla Resurgence stars Hasegawa Hiroki (Attack on Titan) and Takenouchi Yutaka (Oba: The Last Samurai) as Japanese government operatives, as well as Ishihara Satomi (Attack on Titan) as an American envoy. Godzilla Resurgence swept seven awards at the 40th Japan Academy Prize including Best Picture and Best Director.

On a day like any other, a coast guard boat is suddenly attacked and the bridge over Tokyo Bay collapses. Viral and news videos show an unidentified creature in the bay. The Prime Minister (Osugi Ren) calls in legions of cabinet and military officials, bureaucrats and experts to assess the threat. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yaguchi (Hasegawa Hiroki) sounds the warning but no conclusion can be reached. Instead, the government seeks to defuse the situation by assuring the public that the aquatic creature poses no danger to those on land. However, the giant creature soon makes landfall, wreaking massive destruction as it ploughs through the city, and then returns to sea, all while the unprepared government scrambles for a belated response. Yaguchi is placed in charge of a task force to research the mysterious monster dubbed Godzilla, and evidence indicates that it will keep growing more powerful and destructive. When Godzilla returns, all of Japan could fall.

This edition comes with the film on standard and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as well as two bonus discs containing promotional videos, making-of, outtakes, CG making and other special features.

Monster bureaucracy movie
When I first learned that Anno Hideaki was directing the new Godzilla, my reaction was to question why he was doing anything other than finishing the long overdue Rebuild of Evangelion series. Now I hope he makes Godzilla films forever.

Though Godzilla graced Hollywood screens fairly recently in Gareth Edwards's 2014 feature, Shin Godzilla, or Godzilla Resurgence, is the first Japanese Godzilla film in over a decade. Narratively speaking, Anno's take follows a familiar formula: an unidentified giant creature appears, warnings go unheeded, Tokyo gets trampled, humanity eventually pulls together from the burning fires of destruction to fight the monster.

However, before the government can come up with a viable plan to fight the monster, or any plan at all, there must be meetings. Many many meetings. From the moment Godzilla's shadowy form is sighted in the Tokyo Bay, the Prime Minister and his legion of ministers, secretaries and experts begin to file from one room to another for one meeting after another. All the government suits are captioned in loving detail with their names and titles, and most offer nothing useful during the hilariously aversive and inconclusive briefings and discussions on the mysterious unidentified creature that the Prime Minister declares to be not a threat. When Godzilla makes its first destructive landfall, the government is too ill-prepared and off-guard to even launch a first response.

The original Godzilla was born from the atomic bomb, and it's clear that the latest Godzilla is also representative of the country's recent experiences with disaster. With the 2011 tsunami and the authorities' fumbling of the Fukushima nuclear crisis still fresh in mind, the parallels are poignantly obvious and the film's dry parodying of ineffectual politicians, bureaucrats and military officials is satirical gold.

While the satire and script bear Anno's signature through and through, co-director Higuchi Shinji – whose Attack on Titan and Sinking of Japan, however flawed, were definitely accomplishments in special effects – presumably played a big role in making Shin Godzilla an eye-popping visual spectacle. Besides being more mammoth than ever, this Godzilla also takes on different increasingly powerful forms, evolving from a sea creature to a googly-eyed land crawler to a lumbering, inferno-breathing tower of death and destruction. To save Japan, the film casts as its unexpected heroes a group of geeky oddballs and misfits who think outside of the box to analyze Godzilla's anatomy and engineering for a scientific solution.

Threatening Japan with apocalypse since 1954, Godzilla is the longest-running franchise in cinema, and one of Japan's most successful pop culture exports. Besides nostalgia and the timeless appeal of giant monsters breaking things, at least in Japan, Godzilla's endurance onscreen can be partly attributed to its roots and topical relevancy. In emphatically taking Godzilla out of B-movie territory and into a new blockbuster era, Anno and Higuchi's Shin Godzilla doesn't just go bigger and better with the monster, special effects and stars as expected for rebooting franchises, it also goes deeper and smarter with the subtext and satire.
