‘NOTE BOOK’

Over the past two decades, the K-pop scene has been dominated by idol groups, though the early to mid-2000s was the golden era of solo acts with big names like BoA and Rain. Now, we're seeing the gradual emergence of an era of idol soloists–an era in which notable members from idol groups pursue solo careers. As extensions of the groups they belong to, solo idol singers usually follow their groups' concepts. However, Block B's Park Kyung takes a new music route completely different from his group's tough hip-hop style in his solo debut Notebook.
Notebook is a love diary recording the different emotions of a romantic relationship. The love tale begins with "Ordinary Love" (Track 1), a smooth R&B track about the feeling of confusion when falling in love. The Block B rapper surprisingly displays his honey vocals in the duet featuring Park Bo Ram. Following the bubbly mood of "Ordinary Love," "Inferiority Complex" (Track 4) is a fun collaboration with GFriend's Eun Ha about a boy's jealousy. The high-spirited duet gives off a laidback spring groove thanks to its syncopated electric guitar melody and head-nodding hip-hop beats. Eun Ha's high-pitched vocals may not be everyone's cup of tea, but her cute performance plays an important role in establishing the song's lovely style.
Besides R&B, the rapper even makes his mark on the contemporary jazz landscape. To portray the excitement of a shy boy in love, Park Kyung and R&B singer-songwriter Brother Su together crafted the velvety jazz number "When I'm with You" (Track 2). The rapper creates an amazing music mashup by rapping over a jazzy melody accompanied by soulful electric guitar and trumpet tunes. Co-composed by jazz rap artist Kero One and based on a same-titled song from Park Kyung's 2013 mixtape, Ogeul Ogeul (Track 3) is a joyful jazz-hop song that is rarely heard from idol singers.
Featuring different uncommercialized styles, Notebook is an unusual release from a mainstream idol that gives off a refreshing indie vibe. From the jazzy "When I'm with You" to the playful Ogeul Ogeul to the regretful "Memories" (Track 5), Park Kyung showcases his incredibly flexible rapping style. The rapper intelligently takes on a fresh soulful style to develop his own music artistry that separates him from his group. Those who are not interested in Block B's hip-hop vibe may fall in love with Park Kyung's soothing solo work instead.
