May 9, 2017
At the age of 15, IU began her music career as an all-round singer with "Lost Child." However, her music style remained vague until she found her quirky fantasy vibe in the 2010 album Real. Despite her wide variety of music styles, she managed to retain the fairytale concept in her subsequent albums to show her inner child. Reaching adulthood, the singer-songwriter takes on a down-to-earth style to find her true self in her fourth full-length album Palette.
It's hard to tell what "Dlwlrma" (Track 1) means through its apparently nonsensical title. However, when you type out the letters on a Korean keyboard, you will discover that the playful jazzy song is named after IU's nickname "Lee Ji Geum." With the word "geum" meaning "gold," "Lee Ji Geum" is an amusing wordplay on the singer's real name "Lee Ji Eun," where "eun" means silver. Capturing the singer's whimsical and positive spirit, this funny title is also a pun on the words "this moment." Singing in an adorable tone, the singer tells people to enjoy the moment.
When compared to her previous plugs, the autobiographical Palette (Track 2) may seem like her least compelling title song due to its unadorned composition and straightforward lyrics. Yet, the simplistic R&B style allows IU to tell her changes at an unhurried pace and display her newfound self-assertion. The confused and anxious girl in "Twenty Three" has become a confident and carefree young woman living in her own way. G-Dragon shares his experience as a 30-year-old man and encourages the singer to bravely face the unknown future.
A peaceful breakup needs wits. Rather than pointing the finger at each other, it's easier to end a relationship with excuses like "You deserve someone better" or "I'm not good enough." Featuring an expressive piano and string accompaniment, "Ending Scene" (Track 3) beautifully depicts the protagonist's grief and disappointment to her former lover, who refuses to tell her the truth behind the breakup. The relaxed offbeat R&B duet "Can't Love You Anymore" (Track 4), on the contrary, talks about the issue in an indifferent and nonchalant manner through the story of a long-time couple on the verge of breaking up. The random, apathetic conversation between IU and Oh Hyuk vividly illustrates that the opposite of love is not necessarily hate but indifference. Revolving around the theme of separation, the album continues its sorrowful tone in "Through the Night" (Track 8). The comforting acoustic guitar melody and IU's sweet vocals express the yearning for a bygone love in the quiet folk ballad. The song's music video also captures a deep nostalgia through scenes of IU singing with an old-fashioned voice recorder and writing a love letter in a traditional house.
Bouncing from electronica and R&B to jazz and acoustic folk, Palette is a frank reflection of IU's mature attitudes towards life and love. Eschewing her fantasy world, IU seeks comfort on her coming-of-age journey while revealing the sad truth of becoming an adult in this music diary.
