YesAsia Editorial Description

Brace yourself for the over-the-top antics of the anything-goes 1993 Hong Kong classic Future Cops! Loosely based on Street Fighter, the campy action comedy gathers a top-drawer cast of stars – Andy Lau, Chingmy Yau, Jacky Cheung, Simon Yam, Dicky Cheung, Ekin Cheng, Charlie Young, Winnie Lau, Andy Hui and Aaron Kwok – to ham it up onscreen while sporting outrageous costumes and hairstyles. Directed by Wong Jing, the film packs in the hilarious nonsense with a time-travel storyline that brings cops of the future to a 90s Hong Kong high school. For low-tech Street Fighter-style action (choreographed by Ching Siu Tung) and the unbeatable entertainment of Andy Lau with a fake mustache inside a Super Mario Bros. game, look no further than Future Cops!

In the year 2043, notorious crime boss General has been arrested and will be sentenced in seven days. With the presiding judge Yu Ti Hung known for being incorruptible, General has little hope of escaping the law – in the present day. Instead, General's lackeys led by Kent (Ekin Cheng) time-travel back to 1993 when Yu Ti Hung was young and unprotected. Their plan is to brainwash Yu Ti Hung into releasing General 50 years later. Future cops Ti Man (Andy Lau), Broom Man (Jacky Cheung) and Ah Sing (Simon Yam) also go back in time with the mission of finding and protecting Yu Ti Hung.

90s Hong Kong comedy at its craziest
Some people may say that Future Cops is a terrible motion picture. And those people would not be wrong, but that doesn't stop me from wholeheartedly loving this wacky 90s Hong Kong classic. The sci-fi action comedy is directed by – who else? – Hong Kong cinema's king of low-brow comedies Wong Jing, and it aims to entertain by throwing everything but the kitchen sink into its nonsensical fun.

One of the biggest draws of Future Cops is that it's packed with stars, and they all dress up in ridiculous cosplay-quality costumes, as the film giddily rips off characters from Street Fighter II. Future Cops enjoys the distinction of having three Heavenly Kings – Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Aaron Kwok – as Future Cops in the year 2043. Andy Lau's Ti Man is based on Balrog, Jacky Cheung's Broom Man is based on Guile, and Aaron Kwok is a floppy-haired Ryu who gets to peace out of the film pretty early. The other two, along with Simon Yam as Ah Sing (based on Dhalsim), are dispatched to the year 1993 to find and protect future judge Yu Ti Hung from the minions of mega villain General (Ken Lo). The minions include Ekin Cheng as Kent (based on Ken Masters).

The trio of Future Cops time-travel to 1993 and land on the home of 28-year-old loser high school student Tai Hung (Dicky Cheung). His sister is played by an ever-sassy Chingmy Yau (who later cosplays as Chun Li!), and his classmates include Charlie Young, Winnie Lau and Andy Hui. The Future Cops go undercover, Fight Back to School-style, to try to find Yu Ti Hung, who attends the same school as Tai Hung. The bad guys eventually show up for a final showdown, but in between, there is a nonstop procession of skits and parodies, like Andy Lau and Chingmy Yau having a date inside the cardboard-constructed world of a Super Mario Bros. arcade game. Besides Street Fighters, Future Cops also takes characters from Doraemon and Dragon Ball Z, because why not?

Wong Jing is not known for subtlety, and this very dated film never relents with the visual and verbal gags, from cartoonish props and fights to Dicky Cheung's trademark wordy, exaggerated delivery. The jokes keep coming a mile a minute, and some of the comedy is crass and insensitive (including the depiction of Simon Yam's character). For those with a rose-tinted appreciation for the shameless ridiculousness and outrageous creativity of 90s Hong Kong comedies, though, Future Cops is entertaining to the highest degree.

Great cast, good laugh Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie is really great! I love the humor of certain scenes and the entire story especially the acting of the cast. The dialogues also add to that. Also, the spoof they make of Street Fighter and Dragonball is really funny. If you're looking for some good laugh, this movie is for you.

The cast is made up of great actors and actresses. However, it did feel quite odd though that Aaron Kwok wasn't given much appearance in this movie. Leon also wasn't in the movie which made the Four Heavenly Kings incomplete. (But you should see how they included Leon in the movie, really funny!) Anyhow, Andy and Jacky's acting compensated for the two.

For those planning to buy this DVD, there are English subtitles unlike what is said on the description.

Pretty awful no matter how you slice it Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
Future Cops can entertain because it's so bizarre and insane, but at the end of the day it's still crap. The huge amount of stars makes it amusing to watch, and the video game references are great for fans. But does anyone really want to see Street Fighter characters going undercover in high school? Maybe they should do something else instead, like actually fight.

Hilarious Street Fighter Classic!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Since it's 2004 this movie is actually very old, that it was made over 11 years ago by Director Wong Jing. He has made an effort in making this movie or should I say that he hasn't really in some ways as the special effects, sound effects, prop designs, characters and amongst some others are some what very poor and lame. However, this didn't stop me from watching the movie over and over again (in a spaced out period of course). I first saw this movie some years ago and the quality was terrible cos it was on VHS, but when I watched it again on DVD my friends and I couldn't stop laughing as the comedy is still amazing. There are alot of famous actors in this movie and Aaron Kwok made only a guest appearence at the start and the end which was quite weird. I recommend you to get a copy if you haven't seen this movie. All hail "Future Cops"...
