2009 Hong Kong Cop Movies Blu-ray Pack

YesAsia Editorial Description

Three hot new Hong Kong cop action thrillers of 2009 have arrived on Blu-ray in perfect picture and sound quality. Now YesAsia.com offers these three highly sought-after Blu-ray titles in a super-value pack that is simply irresistible!

Overheard

One of the biggest Chinese blockbusters of 2009, Overheard is the latest police thriller from writer-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong, who last collaborated on Lady Cop & Papa Crook. Building from a topic that feels especially relevant in the current economic climate, Overheard opens as a case of financial crime that escalates uncontrollably into violence and devastation. Three of Hong Kong's most popular leading men - Lau Ching Wan (Written), Louis Koo (Connected), and Daniel Wu (Shinjuku Incident) - play morally conflicted cops in this tense, unpredictable crime thriller. Co-produced by Derek Yee, Overheard also gets the top-notch supporting cast of Alex Fong Chung Sun (If You Are The One), Zhang Jingchu (Beast Stalker), Waise Lee (A Better Tomorrow), Lam Ka Wah (Look for a Star), pop idol William Chan in his film debut, and Michael Wong in an over-the-top scene-stealing turn as the nefarious businessman.

Cops Johnny (Lau Ching Wan), Gene (Louis Koo), and Max (Daniel Wu) are part of a special task force investigating a business firm that engages in financial crimes. While monitoring slimy executive Low (Waise Lee), Gene overhears an illegal stock tip. Street-smart Gene is married with kids, one of whom is battling cancer, and he himself has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness; he desperately wants to leave money behind for his family. Clean-cut Max is soon marrying into an overbearing rich family, and wants to prove himself financially. The two decide to make a gamble, and throw their life savings into the stock. Johnny who's harboring some secrets of his own - he's seeing the estranged wife (Zhang Jingchu) of his superior (Alex Fong) - covers for them. For these three cops who have always played it straight, all it takes is one wrong step to send them into a vicious crime spiral of no return.

This edition comes with a bonus DVD containing making of and photo gallery.

Turning Point

When Michael Tse's popular undercover cop character Laughing Gor was killed off in the 2009 TVB police drama E.U., fans mourned his death with online memorial services and a creative outpouring of grief. This unprecedented show of support led TVB to resurrect Laughing Gor on the big screen for the blockbuster spin-off prequel Turning Point. The first film to bear the Shaw Brothers logo since 2002's Drunken Monkey, the TVB-Shaw Brothers co-production is devoted to Laughing Gor's backstory, building the legend behind the struggling small-timer who would eventually become the swaggering, scenery-chewing undercover cop that Hong Kong audiences fell in love with. Though the leading character originates from the small screen, Turning Point's story is largely independent of the TV drama and requires no previous knowledge.

Previously best known on the big screen as Ekin Cheng's sidekick in Young and Dangerous, Michael Tse makes an appealing lead as the twice-undercover caught between the police and the underworld, but what makes Turning Point especially exciting are all the other names attached. Jack-of-all-trades director Herman Yau (True Women for Sale) helms the crime actioner, while acclaimed actors Anthony Wong and Francis Ng make charismatic turns as rival triad leaders. Also making supporting appearances are action star Yuen Biao, Eric Tsang, Felix Wong, Wayne Lai, and TVB starlet Fala Chen in her film debut. For the TV drama fans, there are also crossover cameos from E.U. stars Ron Ng and Sammul Chan.

Undercover cop-turned-triad leader One (Anthony Wong) sends his underling Laughing (Michael Tse) undercover into the police force. But the police send him back into the triads to be an undercover under One! Laughing walks the line passing intel between the two sides, but he's running for his life from both sides of the law after a botched drug bust leaves his handler (Yuen Biao) comatose, and underworld bosses Zatoi (Francis Ng) and Fook (Eric Tsang) out for his head.

This edition comes with director and cast interviews, making of, and trailer.

Lady Cop & Papa Crook

Hong Kong singer-actress Sammi Cheng makes her highly anticipated silver-screen comeback in the kidnapping dramedy Lady Cop & Papa Crook. Appearing in her first film since 2005's Everlasting Regret, Cheng delivers a signature quirky, lovable performance as an eccentric police inspector who's an ace in crimefighting, but at a loss in her relationship with a spastic artist. Singer-actor Eason Chan (The Pye-Dog) co-stars as a mob boss who develops an unlikely alliance with Cheng. Frequent collaborators whose previous films include blockbusters Infernal Affairs, Confession Pain, and Initial D, writer-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong deftly balance crime and comedy elements, making Lady Cop & Papa Crook an entertaining mix of police suspense, triad action, and wry Hong Kong humor. The film also gets impressive mileage from a supporting cast of cops and criminals that includes Chapman To (Trivial Matters), Patrick Tam (Beast Cops), Zhang Guoli (Telephone 601), Michelle Yip (Moonlight in Tokyo), Kate Tsui (Eye in the Sky), Richie Jen (Exiled), Ricky Chan (Confession of Pain), Liu Kai Chi, singer Wilfred Lau, and Conroy Chan (The Heavenly Kings).

World-weary family man John Fok (Eason Chan) is a loving father and the head of a crime organization whose main operation involves smuggling diesel from China to Hong Kong. He's forced to put business on hold after a Mainland police sting results in massive losses and multiple deaths. While he's laying low, rival triads, squabbling relatives, and police on both sides of the border begin making their moves, but Fok isn't about to take things sitting down. When his son is kidnapped, however, he has no choice but to welcome quirky, straight-talking Inspector Maureen Szeto (Sammi Cheng) into his home. To save Fok's son, the cops and the crooks will have to work together, but first they have to stop fighting each other.

This edition comes with both the film's Theatrical Cut version and Director's Cut featuring an alternate ending. Includes making of and trailer.

Laughing (MICHAEL TSE) is formally a police undercover. However due to a drug trafficking case, Inspector Pan (FELIX WONG) is hot on his trails.

Before Laughing becomes a police undercover, he works under triad leader Yi (ANTHONY WONG). Yi treats Laughing as his own brother, however to protect his territory and illegal businesses, Yi instructed Laughing to join the police force and act as his undercover.

Laughing is a high-flyer in the police academy. However he never got a chance to join the force because he is specially picked by Inspector Xian (YUEN BIAO) to be an undercover in the underworld syndicate. Hence Laughing becomes a “double-undercover”.

Yi is happy that Laughing is allocated to the triad of his rival (FRANCIS NG). To make his situation worse, Laughing falls in love with the triad leader’s sister, Karen.

John Fok (Eason Chan) is the kingpin of illegal red oil in Greater China. When an oil tanker explodes accidentally, he becomes the focus of investigation by Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese police and is forced to halt his business to wait things out. While his business rivals start closing in, a member of his household is planning to betray him. On the surface, John seems totally helpless, but in reality, he's been staging a major comeback for months. Just as he is finally ready to turn his fortune around, however, his only son is kidnapped!

Senior Inspector Molline Szeto (Sammi Cheng) is the rising star in the police force, who is well praised for busting crime with her characteristic sangfroid and precision. However, in matters of love, she is totally at wit's end. After dating the same man for more than ten years with no likely prospect of an imminent wedding, she determines to cut the knot once and for all, before she becomes too old for childbirth. Poised at the crossroad of her life, she is thrilled to be assigned to investigate the kidnap of John's son.

John dispatches his whole gang to ferret out his son's whereabouts, only to find out that his rivals are redeploying people in China to assail him. Just when he is about to order an all-out fightback, Molline suddenly arrives with her team to garrison at his house. Spurning her at first, he soon finds her critical analysis of the situation at hand both apt and useful. An unlikely cooperation between cops and crooks thus ensues, leading to conflicts and clashes galore at every step till the very end.
