Well....
| Maybe i am not into this kind of film. I got it because i knew this film many awards in various festival. Tony Leung plays a writer who fell in love with a woman in room 2046 only to learn that she died, nevertheless, he continued to write the story using her as an inspiration. Too deep for me...i really have a hard time. |

Putting life in perspective
Putting life in perspective
| Despite earlier reviews - that the movie was slow and the plot confusing - when it was first released, I totally get the story. Perhaps it is only after a certain age and with some life experience can one fully realise how one cannot escape from the past and yet one can never go back to what was before. While struggling to find ourselves again, we miss or lost the moment that is in the present, which is what the movie successfully conveyed. |

Not bad...I guess...
| So this movie was good, acting was great, but the sotry was a little silly. The visuals were fantastic, and it was amaginative, but not up to the standards of the actors in this film, (i.e.-gong li has many better films). Ziyi Zhang stands out in this movie if only for the reason that she has the most screen time of the major actresses which allows her to express more feelings. Good movie but could have been great. |

Where is the Cantonese version of this movie? I can't find it. I can't rate it yet since I haven't seen it. Since this movie got so many rewards, I'll give it a 10. |

Ambience
|
As a new filmmaker entering the market in 2005 I was exposed to 2046 by accident from a close friend who left it in my car. I was overjoyed as the movie revealed its relationships and the lead actor`s bi-line regarding his fiction stories. Since then I`ve scrambled to view all of the directors work. The film is poetry. A masterpiece! |

Didn't know what to expect..
| .. but I was very surprised to find a well written and wonderfully acted movie. I tend to be drawn to movies that don't packed everything into a nice little present for the audience. I can understand the frustration when watching the movie if you expecting that. I personally enjoy films that play like books.. each watch/read gives you more understanding and makes you want to watch again. Of course if you don't care for that, I wouldn't recommend this movie. I also enjoy slower moving movies because I think it more accurately reflects life.. allowing the audience to relate better to the characters. Honestly it is a character piece as much as a good love story. Definately watching again.. |

Another WKW Gem
|
Watching 2046 is comparable to a jouney into the lives of a chain of lost souls. Like Wong Kar Wai's (WKW) previous experiments with Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time & In the Mood for Love, every character in the movie is hiding a desparate past that they cling preciously to for fear being betrayed. Chow Mo Wan, played by long time WKW collaborator, Tony Leung, falls in love with a series of women played by Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi & Faye Wong, but unable to sustain the relationships partly due to the forces of time & place acting against him but more so due to his own inner demons & insecurities. 2046 is a journey through the several years in the 1960s following Chow's bitter ending with Su Lai Zhen, a character played by the talented Maggie Cheung in WKW's previous effort, In the Mood for Love. But this is hardly a sequel to "Love" as Chow is now a changed man. His gentlemanly manners with a clear social concience has been replaced with a charming womaniser with a liking for the nighlife and alcohol. Has Chow changed or is he simply masking his sorrowful past? To maintain his womanising lifestyle, Chow resort to writing cheap soft porn stories. Soon he began to write a futuristic novel, about people boarding a train to the year 2046. A place & time where they go in order to retrieve their lost memories, but no one knows whether this place exists because nobody ever returns. The focus is not so much on the futuristic 2046, which the film has dedicated a respatable screen time to, but on the weaving of the characters in a melting triangle of love, lost & regrets. The movie is worth watching alone for its use of colors, tones, sound, cinematograpgy, editing and sountrack in all their splendid variations. Think Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Orson Welle's Citizen Kane. Ignore the surreal settings, take away the list of A-list Asian actors, beacuse the real star here is the director, Wong Kar Wai. He has weaved a complex story of characters study, a psyche into human emotions at their most weakest, a time they are healing an old wound from past relationships. Like many other WKW efforts, watch the movie as if you are taking a journey of discorvery. Forget the destination, it is the journey that you will remember and cherish in all its glories. |

Boring
| I do not understand why anyone would give this film 5 stars. From the beginning it was confusing and boring. I didn't even bother to finish the movie. Its very slow and it just drags on. Not recommended. |
